Theo Epstein Rumors

Latest Red Sox Buzz

Alex Speier of WEEI has the latest Red Sox buzz from the GM meetings... Theo Epstein confirmed that he has a new contract, but wouldn't reveal the terms. About a month ago, SI.com's Jon Heyman said it was worth about $7MM over three years. It seems that Mike Timlin plans to pitch in 2009, but it won't be for the Red Sox. Timlin, 43 in March, posted a 5.66 ERA in 49.1 innings this year. It might be time to head back to the NL. Paul Hoynes says Sean Casey also won't be back with the Sox next year. Epstein...   Continue Reading

Let's round 'em up for Friday... The Royals claimed 24 year-old righty Jairo Cuevas off waivers from the Braves. I recently did a Q&A with a blog called The 'Burgh Blues. Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News expects the Yankees to spend big this winter. Meanwhile, Peter Abraham reminds fans not to panic. Joel Sherman examines why the Yankees and Red Sox discarded Carlos Pena in 2006. Theo Epstein's new deal will be made official after the World Series. Sox Machine debates whether the White Sox should add a starter this winter. Former Dodgers GM Fred Claire wonders...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Beltran, Brewers, Padres

Links for Friday... The Padres claimed second baseman Travis Denker off waivers from the Giants. Surprising to see the Giants let him go. Ted Berg at MetsBlog explains how a Carlos Beltran rumbling spun out of control. I recently did a Brewers Q&A with Bernie's Crew. The Padres called yesterday's report about John Moores selling his share of the team "highly speculative." Tim Sullivan considers the statement revealing, and notes that this is a bad time to sell. Michael S. Schmidt of the New York Times chatted with Scott Boras. Mark Cuban mentions that the struggling economy is slowing down...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Gillick, Pedro, Dempster, McLouth

Here's a look at the latest column from SI.com's Jon Heyman. Heyman is hearing "scuttlebutt" that GM Pat Gillick may not leave the Phillies after all. Theo Epstein's new deal is worth about $7MM over three years, which might be highest among GMs. Pedro Martinez's agent insists Pedro will pitch next year. In May, Martinez said he wanted to pitch two or three more years a couple days after suggesting retirement was an option. Moises Alou is undecided on 2009. Cubs GM Jim Hendry expects to re-sign Ryan Dempster after the season. Heyman says the Yankees "will likely make a...   Continue Reading

Week in Review: 9/14 - 9/20

Another week down here at MLBTR, here's your review! The Brewers fired manager Ned Yost on Monday. Yost has taken a lot of criticism, and while I personally don't feel like it's a bad move, it seems like an odd time to disrupt the clubhouse, given that the Brewers are right in the wild card race. Perhaps this was intended to spark the Brewers and act as a wakeup call, but they have just two wins since the move. In an attempt to cut payroll, the Tigers may have to move Magglio Ordonez this offseason. Ordonez will make $18MM next...   Continue Reading

Heyman's Latest: Epstein, Cano, Hudson

Highlights from Jon Heyman's latest column at SI.com: Brewers owner Mark Attanasio reportedly made the decision to fire Ned Yost, but GM Doug Melvin's power is not diminished. Theo Epstein's new agreement is for three years. Heyman notes "talk lately that the Yankees might consider trading Robinson Cano." Apparently Cano still has good trade value and the Yankees could fill multiple needs in a deal. Heyman says the Dodgers are interested. Cano was subject of an odd Dodgers rumor back in July. The Yanks would be interested in Orlando Hudson if they were to trade Cano. Alex Rodriguez patched things...   Continue Reading

Epstein Agrees To Extension

WEDNESDAY: Amalie Benjamin sifts through the murky statements regarding the Epstein negotiations. Regardless, it looks like he's staying. TUESDAY: According to Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein has agreed to a contract extension. Some details still need to be hammered out though. Epstein's moves since winning the World Series last year: Re-signed Mike Lowell, Curt Schilling, and Mike Timlin. Exercised options on Julian Tavarez and Tim Wakefield. Offered arbitration to Eric Gagne; selected Bryan Price with compensation pick. June draft picks also included Casey Kelly and Ryan Westmoreland. Acquired David Aardsma. Signed Bartolo Colon and...   Continue Reading

Several Teams Could Have New GMs In '09

A few articles today take a look at some GM positions in '09 that will have new faces... Michael Radano takes a look at who might fill the GM post for the Phillies in '09. Based on the Phillies current success, Radano wonders if they should just promote from within. That would mean one of the team's assistant GMs, Mike Arbuckle and Ruben Amaro Jr. Both Arbuckle and Amaro have interviewed with other teams for open GM positions in the past. Rick Freeman takes a look at the names most likely to end up as the GM in Seattle (John...   Continue Reading
