Rafael Furcal Rumors: Monday

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2008 at 10:45pm CDT

10:42pm: The fourth team is the Braves, according to Ken Rosenthal.  Kinzer told Rosenthal the Braves are "in deep" and Furcal is seriously considering their offer.  Rosenthal believes it’s a three-year offer with a vesting option.  Rosenthal spoke to an exec who felt the same as Joel Sherman, that Furcal does not want to sign with the A’s.

Adding Furcal would give the Braves a middle infield surplus.  Good shortstops are hard to find and the Braves would have two.

4:40pm: Yahoo’s Tim Brown talked to Furcal’s agent Paul Kinzer, who said his client will sign by Tuesday.  He’s mulling offers from the Dodgers, Royals, A’s, and…a mystery team.

1:32pm: Joel Sherman of the New York Post says the Blue Jays have dropped out of the bidding for Furcal (now confirmed by Furcal’s agent).  Sherman adds that Furcal prefers the A’s the least but they are offering the most money.

1:10pm: ESPN’s Buster Olney says the A’s offered four years and $40MM, up about $4MM from their previous offer.

8:10am: According to Ken Rosenthal, the A’s appear to be the frontrunners for free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal.  Joel Sherman said the same on Friday.  Rosenthal says the A’s have upped their initial four-year offer to Furcal, and it appears to be the only four-year proposal on the table.  Yahoo’s Jeff Passan suggested on Wednesday that the Royals believe it will take four years and $44MM to sign him.  The A’s were reportedly in the $35-40MM range previously.

The Dodgers, Blue Jays, and Royals were identified as other finalists last week by Furcal’s agent.  Those teams all have issues coming up with the money or years Furcal desires.  Rosenthal suggests Orlando Cabrera, Angel Berroa, and Jack Wilson as possible alternatives for the Dodgers.

Phillies Sign Chan Ho Park

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2008 at 9:01am CDT

MONDAY: David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News says Park held a press conference in Korea today to announce his signing with the Phillies.  It’s a one-year, $2.5MM deal with up to $5MM in incentives, according to the Korea Times.  Park relishes the chance to start for the Phils.  He said the Giants, Diamondbacks, Royals, and Blue Jays also expressed interest.

With Park signing as a starter, where does that leave Jamie Moyer?  The Phillies still have one unsettled rotation spot, though this may reduce their urgency.

THURSDAY: Todd Zolecki says the Phillies "are working on hammering out a deal with pitcher Park, who would work in relief."

WEDNESDAY: According to Yahoo’s Tim Brown, the Phillies are close to signing Chan Ho Park.  He says the Phils may view him as a starter.  Park’s average fastball velocity jumped from 88.4mph in ’07 to 92.6mph in ’08, leading some to label him a sleeper.

Joe Nelson Exploring Options

By Nat Boyle | December 14, 2008 at 10:52am CDT

The Marlins did not tender right-handed reliever Joe Nelson a contract on Friday; however, they have not shut the door on the reliever say Joe Frisaro of mlb.com.

"Nelson’s agent, Doug Schaer, fielded a few inquiries on Saturday regarding the 34-year-old right-hander, who is now a free agent. Working within a tight budget, Florida was offering about $650,000 for Nelson, who might be able to top $800,000 on the open market. Nelson was a valuable setup man last year, posting a 3-1 record with a 2.00 ERA in 59 games. He also has experience closing."

Despite Nelson being the only player non-tendered by the Marlins, there do not appear to be any hard feelings; however, he shouldn’t have much trouble finding a bump in pay from a team with higher payroll. Frisaro lists Kansas City and Boston as potential suitors. Nelson is 34 and lives in the West Palm Beach area.

Juan Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun Sentinel says Nelson is taking a calculated risk. Both articles note Florida would welcome back Nelson’s veteran presence if he were unable to find what he’s looking for on the open market.

Royals Rumors: German, Furcal, Farnsworth

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 13, 2008 at 10:26am CDT

Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star has the latest on the Royals.

  • The Royals signed Esteban German to a one-year deal.
  • If they’re going to sign Rafael Furcal, club officials say they’d have to trade away Jose Guillen to free-up money, yet there was “scant interest” in Guillen at the Winter Meetings.
  • However, the Royals are willing to offer Furcal a four-year deal, something the Dodgers have been reluctant to do.
  • The Kyle Farnsworth deal includes a club option for 2011.
  • Royals GM Dayton Moore insists that Mark Teahen is staying put.
  • Their payroll is down to $70MM after non-tendering John Bale, Joey Gathright, Jason Smith and Jairo Cuevas.

By Tim Dierkes | December 12, 2008 at 2:44pm CDT

Links for Friday…

  • Mets owner Fred Wilpon lost some dough.
  • The Red Sox expressed interest in Kenshin Kawakami yesterday. Michael Silverman says Kawakami is expected to choose a team and sign in January (the Orioles are also interested).
  • John Perrotto says the Marlins like Max Ramirez and are willing to trade pitching prospect Ryan Tucker.
  • Bernie Williams will play winter ball in preparation for the World Baseball Classic.
  • Paul Sullivan says Cubs manager Lou Piniella was upset at the thought of losing Mark DeRosa.
  • Rany Jazayerli weighs in on the Royals’ signing of Kyle Farnsworth.  Joe Posnanski talks about Farnsworth and many other topics.
  • Andrew Baggarly says the Giants are not interested in Mike Lowell.
  • Bob Elliott says the Blue Jays had an agreement to pay the Braves to take Everth Cabrera seventh in the Rule 5 draft, but the Padres picked him third.

Willy Taveras Will Be Non-Tendered

By Tim Dierkes | December 12, 2008 at 9:35am CDT

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post says to expect outfielder Willy Taveras to join the free agent market:

The Nationals’ unwillingness to take Taveras and Juan Morillo for Tim Redding — a deal Colorado thought was done — will lead the Rockies to non-tender the center fielder today, making him a free agent.

Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News agrees he’ll be non-tendered, noting the Yankees, Red Sox, Reds, Marlins, and White Sox also had trade discussions for Taveras.

Renck adds that Glendon Rusch has a minor league offer for $750K in hand, and is weighing offers from four other clubs.  Rusch would be the Rockies’ second lefty behind newly signed Alan Embree.

A few more notes: the Rockies have mild interest in bringing back Josh Fogg…they’re the favorite for Redding if he’s non-tendered too…the Rox will make a non-guaranteed offer to Scott Podsednik…Joey Gathright would be of interest if non-tendered.

Royals Sign Horacio Ramirez

By Tim Dierkes | December 11, 2008 at 3:31pm CDT

THURSDAY, 3:31pm: ESPN’s Steve Phillips says it’s a one-year, $1.8MM deal plus incentives.

WEDNESDAY, 6:45pm: MLB.com’s Dick Kaegel learned from Dayton Moore that the Royals reached an agreement with Ramirez on a one-year deal.

5:29pm: According to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star, the Royals are close to signing lefty Horacio Ramirez.  He pitched well for them this year before they shipped him to Chicago for minor league outfielder Paulo Orlando.  The Royals would give Ramirez a chance to start.

Minor Moves

By Tim Dierkes | December 11, 2008 at 12:35pm CDT

A few minor signings are rolling in.  I’ll update this post if more of this ilk come about.

  • The Royals signed pitcher Doug Waechter.
  • The Rangers signed pitchers Brian Gordon and Joe Torres to minor league deals.
  • The Rangers also completed the Wes Littleton trade, receiving pitcher Beau Vaughan from the Red Sox.  Vaughan’s picture at that link is awesome, by the way.

Rafael Furcal Rumors: Thursday

By Tim Dierkes | December 11, 2008 at 9:03am CDT

9:03am: Following yesterday’s implication from Kinzer that all offers for Furcal are for at least three years, Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times explains that the Dodgers offered two years plus a vesting option based on playing time.  Though Ned Colletti said Furcal could exceed salary expectations if he hits incentives, Kinzer says the offer still falls short.

1:57am: ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick talked to Rafael Furcal’s agent Paul Kinzer, who expects his client to make a decision by the middle or end of next week.  You know the suitors – the Dodgers, A’s, Royals, and Blue Jays.  Yahoo’s Jeff Passan wrote yesterday that the Royals believe it will take a four-year, $44MM deal to sign Furcal.
