Dodgers Interested In Mark Mulder

By Tim Dierkes | April 22, 2009 at 9:31am CDT

Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times has more information on free agent starter Mark Mulder, after talking to his agent Gregg Clifton:

Mulder is working out and, according to Clifton, could sign in one week and throw 100 pitches in a major league game in another two weeks. The Dodgers, with one starter on the disabled list, are among the "six to eight" teams interested, Clifton said.  And how much contact has Clifton had with the Angels about Mulder?  "Literally none," Clifton said.

Classic agent-speak – he is somehow not sure whether six, seven, or eight teams are interested in his client.  But so much for the report yesterday that Angels GM Tony Reagins contacted Clifton regarding Mulder.  Shaikin says Reagins is doing fact-finding on free agent pitchers, with the search even extending to the independent leagues.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe wrote Sunday that in addition to the Dodgers, the A's and Nationals are extremely interested in Mulder.

  • ESPN's Jorge Arangure Jr. says "negotiations between the New York Yankees and Cuban exile prospect Felix Perez have broken down because of the outfielder's problem in obtaining a visa."  Perez was set for a bonus north of $3MM, but questions have been raised about his age.  The Yanks may have interest in a couple of other Cuban players, Noel Arguelles and Jose Iglesias, once they're declared free agents.
  • According to Phil Miller of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Torii Hunter would seemingly like to finish his career with the Twins.
  • MLB.com's Alyson Footer says sending Drew Sutton to the Reds for Jeff Keppinger was "a great, great deal for the Astros."  Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle explains why the move was made.

Cafardo’s Latest: Peavy, Mulder

By Nat Boyle | April 19, 2009 at 11:11am CDT

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has a couple notes in his Sunday column:

  • Should he be dealt this season, the Red Sox appeal to Jake Peavy, who hit it off with Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia in the World Baseball Classic. Padres GM Kevin Towers is hopeful his clubs success will continue and trading Peavy won't have to come up. Only twelve games into the season and the Pads are tied with the Dodgers at 9-3.
  • The Nationals, A's, and Dodgers are all interested in Mark Mulder who believes he "could be ready two weeks after signing."

Yankees Outfield Options

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | April 18, 2009 at 9:37am CDT

According to George A. King III of the New York Post Austin Kearns or Jason Repko could become options for the Yankees if they decide to look outside the organization for outfield depth. Now that Xavier Nady could be out for a while the Yankees have moved Nick Swisher into right, but their bench isn't as deep as before.

King writes that the Dodgers "might be willing to trade" Repko and the Nationals "are said to be entertaining offers" for Kearns.

This King update is from a couple days ago. As MLB.com's Anthony DiComo writes we don't know much more about Nady's health now than we did Thursday. I'd expect the Yankees to get a full report on Nady before dealing for additional depth.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Bay, Dodgers, Draft

By Cork Gaines | April 17, 2009 at 7:47am CDT

On this date eight years ago, Barry Bonds hit his 500th career home run and on this date three years ago, Pedro Martinez won his 200th game. Both players are likely headed to Cooperstown, neither player has retired and yet both players are without a team. As we wrap up the second week of the '09 season, let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere…

  • Surviving Grady fancies the Red Sox new Canadian import, Jason Bay, who is helping Bostonians forget all about…what was his name?
  • UmpBump puts together an impressive roster of players Ned Colletti "gave up on."
  • The Ghost of Moonlight Graham shows that history does not favor pitchers taken with the top pick of the draft. In fact, they also show that of the best pitchers acquired via the draft in the last 20 years, only Dwight Gooden was drafted in the first five picks.
  • Jorge Says No puts together a roster of the worst free agent contracts of the last five years.
  • Feeling Dodger Blue looks at the Dodgers' most recent top picks, both pitchers, and both appear to finally be healthy.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex.com. If you have a suggestion for this feature, Cork can be reached here or on Twitter.

Pirates Acquire Delwyn Young

By Tim Dierkes | April 15, 2009 at 1:07pm CDT

1:07pm: Jen Langosch of MLB.com says the Pirates designated lefty reliever Dave Davidson for assignment to make room for Young.  Langosch also has GM Neal Huntington's take on the acquisition in her blog post.

7:17am: According to Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times, the Pirates acquired outfielder Delwyn Young from the Dodgers for two minor league players to be named later.  Young had been designated for assignment on Monday.  Young, 26, hit .246/.321/.341 last year at Triple A but .337/.384/.571 in '07.  He dealt with a strained oblique last year and began this season with an elbow issue.

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette notes that the Dodgers had been offering Young to the Pirates as part of the Jack Wilson talks during the offseason.

Rosenthal On Penny, Bay, Brandon Wood

By Tim Dierkes | April 15, 2009 at 8:25am CDT

The latest from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports…

  • Rosenthal suggests Cecil Cooper of the Astros may be the first manager fired; he says the team's veterans "do not care for Cooper."  He's in the last year of his contract.
  • With a comeback season for the Red Sox, Brad Penny could be in line for a lucrative free agent deal after the season.  One executive told Rosenthal Penny had the least amount of structural issues in his arm compared to similar free agents last winter.
  • The Red Sox are said to be "maintaining a quiet dialogue" with Jason Bay, who is eligible for free agency after the season.  Rosenthal says there's no acrimony or deadline; the sides are just trying to determine Bay's value.  It's a tricky calculation for corner outfielders, and the market will be flush after the season.
  • Angels infielder Brandon Wood appears big league ready.  Will the Angels trade Chone Figgins this summer to make room, or at least let Figgins leave as a free agent after the season?  There are plenty of ways to sort out the situation, but Wood deserves to play.
  • Dodgers reliever Ronald Belisario, signed out of the Venezuelan winter league, drew strong praise from one scout.
  • One scout had this to say regarding Emilio Bonifacio: "He's just a guy."

According to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick, Dodgers outfielder Delwyn Young was designated for assignment today.  They'll have ten days to trade, release, or waive him.  Young is out of options.

Young, 26, hit .246/.321/.341 last year at Triple A but .337/.384/.571 in '07.  He dealt with a strained oblique last year and began this season with an elbow issue.  Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News suggested yesterday that the Indians, Pirates, and Phillies were eyeing Young.

Manny Would Like A Second Indians Stint

By Tim Dierkes | April 13, 2009 at 8:51am CDT

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Manny Ramirez would like to play for the Indians one more time before the end of his career.  He even talked to Jim Thome about reuniting in Cleveland.  Of course, it takes two to tango and the Indians have Travis Hafner locked in at DH through 2012.

Back in the 2000-01 offseason, it seemed that Manny wanted to stay in Cleveland but his agent Jeff Moorad steered him toward the more lucrative Boston offer.  The Indians topped out at $138MM over eight years, but Ramirez received $160MM from the Red Sox.  Manny reportedly regretted his decision by the summer of '01, according to his authorized biography Becoming Manny.

Ken Gurnick and John Schlegel of MLB.com have follow-up comments from Manny and Scott Boras.
