Heyman On Fielder, Moreland, Kuroda

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 15, 2011 at 1:07pm CDT

Agent Scott Boras hasn’t explicitly stated Prince Fielder’s asking price, but one GM with some interest in the free agent first baseman says he knows the target figure. "Isn't it obvious?," the GM asked Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, implying that Fielder will look to approach Albert Pujols’ $254MM deal. Here’s the latest on Fielder, plus other notes from Heyman:

  • Though Rangers people have suggested they're focused on pitching and trades, Heyman says the team talked about deals involving Mitch Moreland. Barring an addition at first base, the Rangers will be relying on Moreland in 2012.
  • The Blue Jays “are said to be thinking long and hard about Fielder.”
  • There’s “no way” Adam Jones is going to Atlanta for Jair Jurrjens, an Orioles person says. The Braves and Orioles discussed a deal involving Jurrjens and Martin Prado, according to FOX Sports. It should be noted that FOX didn’t say Jones was available in trade talks with the Braves.
  • The Yankees seem to like Hiroki Kuroda more than the other free agent pitchers, according to Heyman.

Michael Cuddyer Rumors: Wednesday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 14, 2011 at 8:10pm CDT

We learned yesterday that the Rockies' offer to Michael Cuddyer is greater than the Twins' three-year proposal in the $25MM range. However, Cuddyer appears to be seeking a three-year, $30MM deal. Here's the latest on the free agent outfielder with the most recent updates up top:

  • GM Terry Ryan says the Twins have not ended contract talks with Cuddyer, according to ESPN.com.
  • The Mariners are in on Cuddyer and the Phillies may be involved as well, according to Yahoo's Tim Brown (on Twitter).
  • The Rockies continue discussing a deal with Cuddyer, according to MLB.com's Thomas Harding (on Twitter). If the sides agree to terms, the Rockies will start pursuing free agent right-hander Hiroki Kuroda less intensely.
  • There's no official word that Cuddyer isn't returning to the Twins, according to Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star Tribune (on Twitter). Minnesota seems to be nearing a deal with Josh Willingham.
  • The Reds have some interest in Cuddyer.

Quick Hits: Varitek, A’s, Braves, Cordero, Lee, Pujols

By Mike Axisa | December 13, 2011 at 11:42pm CDT

Some links as Tuesday turns into Wednesday…

  • The Red Sox have not yet made catcher and captain Jason Varitek a contract offer, reports Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. Boston added Kelly Shoppach to Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ryan Lavarnway on Tuesday, a move that likely spelled the end of Varitek's time with the Sox.
  • There are clubs with interest in trading for both Gio Gonzalez and Andrew Bailey and others with interest in both Jair Jurrjens and Martin Prado, but Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports says the Athletics and Braves are likely to deal their players separately to maximize the return.  Rosenthal and Morosi note that the Braves and Orioles have discussed a deal that included both Jurrjens and Prado.
  • Interest in free agent closer Francisco Cordero has slowed down, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (on Twitter). His market could hinge on how clubs fill their other roster holes.
  • The Pirates still have interest in first baseman Derrek Lee even after trading for Casey McGehee, reports CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman (on Twitter). Bringing Lee back at first base would allow them to use McGehee at the hot corner with Pedro Alvarez.
  • Heyman hears that the Angels put a deadline on their ten-year, $254MM offer to Albert Pujols (Twitter link). The deal did seem to come together very quickly Wednesday night into Thursday morning last week.
  • The Rockies do have some money to spend according to Heyman (on Twitter). In addition to Carlos Beltran and Michael Cuddyer, they also have interest in Hiroki Kuroda, Joe Saunders, and various trade targets.
  • Morosi says (on Twitter) that Andruw Jones could also be an option for the Rockies if Beltran and Cuddyer sign elsewhere.
  • The Cardinals' interest in pitching upgrades is "understated," reports Joe Strauss of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (on Twitter). Both Kyle Lohse and Jake Westbrook remain on the trade block.
  • The Yokohama Bay Stars have released right-hander Hiroki Sanada so that he may pursue a deal in MLB according to a report passed along by Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker. No teams bid on Sanada when he was posted last week.
  • The Astros and Rays are possibilities for Ivan Rodriguez, according to Heyman (on Twitter). Though the Mets have discussed Rodriguez, they’re leaning toward relying on Mike Nickeas as their backup to starter Josh Thole.
  • MLBPA executive director Michael Weiner says the Joint Drug Agreement should provide Ryan Braun with privacy and fair proceedings. “I urge all to reserve judgment on this matter until the JDA's process has played itself out," Weiner said in a statement.

Yankees Haven’t Made Offer To Hiroki Kuroda

By Mark Polishuk | December 9, 2011 at 9:59am CDT

9:59am: While no offer has been made, the Yankees indeed "like Kuroda very much," according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter link).

8:55am: The Yankees haven't made Kuroda an offer, tweets MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

8:13am: The Yankees have offered Hiroki Kuroda a one-year contract worth approximately $12MM in U.S. dollars, reports Japanese news outlet Sponichi (passed on by Mike Axisa of River Ave Blues).  The Yankees were one of several teams known to have an interest in Kuroda and as Axisa points out, the presence of Kuroda's old battery-mate Russell Martin could be a factor that only the Yankees could offer the right-hander.

If signed, Kuroda would join a rotation that features C.C. Sabathia and four relative question marks in Phil Hughes, Ivan Nova, Freddy Garcia and A.J. Burnett.  On paper, Kuroda would be the No. 2 starter, though it remains to be seen how the 36-year-old would fare pitching in the AL East as opposed to pitcher-friendly Dodger Stadium.

NL West Notes: Rockies, Stewart, Dodgers

By Steve Adams | December 8, 2011 at 2:00am CDT

Earlier today we saw a rare trade between division rivals when the Rockies sent Huston Street to the Padres for a player to be named later and cash. Let's take a look at some other news and rumors from the NL West…

  • The Rockies "immediately contacted" Hiroki Kuroda's agent following the Street trade, writes Troy Renck of the Denver Post. With $7MM freed up, Colorado has a number of options. Renck once again mentions Colorado's interest in Michael Cuddyer as well.
  • The Rockies like Jonathon Niese a lot, but have had no conversations to date with the Mets, according to Renck. New York is open to moving the 25-year-old lefty.
  • The Pirates are keeping in touch with the Rox on Ian Stewart, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.
  • Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times tweets that the Dodgers are keeping in touch with the agent for Mike MacDougal. GM Ned Colletti is also talking with other relievers, but talks with MacDougal are the furthest along.
  • The Dodgers have "no interest" in bringing back Manny Ramirez, writes Hernandez's colleague Steve Dilbeck.

Five Teams In On Hiroki Kuroda

By Tim Dierkes | December 7, 2011 at 1:15pm CDT

The Cubs, Rockies, Diamondbacks, and others are trying for Hiroki Kuroda, tweets MLB Network's Jon Heyman, though he could still return to Japan.  ESPN's Jerry Crasnick adds the Yankees and Red Sox to the list of suitors.

The Rockies also remain interested in the Reds' Edinson Volquez, tweets Troy Renck.

Cashman: “I Think It’s Going To Be Hard To Add”

By Steve Adams | December 7, 2011 at 12:59am CDT

Yankees GM Brian Cashman told Jack Curry of the YES Network that he's not optimistic about making a trade or signing a free agent (Twitter link). Said Cashman, "I think its going to be hard to add." Here's some more Yankees notes:

  • Danny Knobler of CBS Sports tweets that one rival team predicted the Yankees will eventually end up with Gio Gonzalez. The Tigers are currently reported to be making a run at the A's lefty.
  • The New York Post's Joel Sherman tweets that the Yankees believe Hiroki Kuroda will come east, but they see him as a tough fit because he's not a clear top-of-the-rotation addition.

Heyman On Wright, Kuroda, Gonzalez, Marlins

By Luke Adams 2 | December 5, 2011 at 5:13pm CDT

Here's the latest from MLB Network's Jon Heyman's Twitter feed:

  • The Mets received a couple unsolicited "bad" trade offers for David Wright, but have no plans to move him.
  • The Diamondbacks are known to be targeting Hiroki Kuroda, and a report this morning indicated talks between the two sides were getting more serious. However, Heyman spoke to a source who believed it was a "stretch" that the right-handed would sign with Arizona.
  • Athletics GM Billy Beane is telling teams he's not anxious to trade Gio Gonzalez.
  • One GM called the reported six-year offer on the table to C.J. Wilson "nuts."
  • The Marlins continue to say they're serious about their pursuit of Albert Pujols, even with Jose Reyes and Heath Bell on board.

Diamondbacks Targeting Kuroda, Saito

By Tim Dierkes | December 5, 2011 at 12:16pm CDT

12:16pm: The D'Backs also have reliever Takashi Saito in their sights, tweets Henson.  Recently Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports tweeted that the Brewers and five other teams have shown interest in Saito.

9:18am: We've known for a while now that the Diamondbacks are targeting free agent righty Hiroki Kuroda.  According to a tweet from Yahoo's Steve Henson, an official says a deal could get done this week if the 36-year-old drops his demand for a second-year player option.

Reportedly, Kuroda will consider all offers regardless of location, and seeks a $12-13MM salary.  In addition to Arizona, the Hiroshima Carp, Rockies, Red Sox, and Angels appear to have varying levels of interest.

Kuroda Seeking $12-$13MM Deal

By Steve Adams | December 4, 2011 at 3:00pm CDT

With his landscape reportedly "wide open," Hiroki Kuroda is seeking a $12-$13MM salary, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney, who feels that the goal is attainable because Kuroda isn't seeking a long-term deal.

Kuroda, who will be 37 on Opening Day, enjoyed arguably his best Major League season in 2011, posting career bests in ERA (3.07) and innings pitched (202). His 7.2 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 were consistent with his marks in 2010. Advanced metrics like FIP (3.78) and SIERA (3.66) will suggest that he took a step back from his 2010 numbers, and it's worth noting that he post a career-low 43.2% groundball rate and a career high 22% line drive rate.

Kuroda signed a one-year deal with a $12MM base last year for his fourth season in the Majors (all with the Dodgers). His Dodgers tenure was effectively ended when Los Angeles inked Chris Capuano to a two-year deal last week. The Rockies and Red Sox are known to have interest in Kuroda.
