Huston Street

Marquis Unlikely For Rockies

By Tim Dierkes | December 8, 2008 at 6:47pm CDT

6:47pm: Troy Renck says the Rockies told the Cubs they didn’t have room in the budget for Marquis.  The Rox may attempt to acquire a starter via trade, using Huston Street and Luis Vizcaino as chips.

Other notes from Renck: the Padres and Rangers have interest in free agent outfielder Cory Sullivan.  And interest in Willy Taveras is minimal given Friday’s non-tender deadline.

5:13pm: According to MLB.com’s Thomas Harding, the Rockies have internally discussed the possibility of acquiring Cubs’ starter Jason Marquis.  However, Marquis isn’t exactly the front-rotation type they seek.  Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald heard from Cubs people that "nothing of substance is getting done" on the Marquis-Rockies front.

Heyman’s Latest: Furcal, Sabathia, K-Rod

By Nat Boyle | December 7, 2008 at 10:57am CDT

Jon Heyman has a few new posts on his Fan-Nation blog:

  • Heyman thinks its peculiar that Rafael Furcal passed up his last offer of 4 years, $35-40MM, especially while the shortstop market is thinning out. The Giants signed Edgar Renteria. The Cubs want a lefty-bat. The Braves need to deal Yunel Escobar before they’ll be interested in Furcal. Again, Buster Olney noted today that Furcal was asking 4 years, $52MM.
  • Can the Giants afford CC Sabathia? They’ve already signed Renteria, Jeremy Affeldt, and Bobby Howry. And he would be the team’s second $100MM contract having already made the mistake of overpaying Barry Zito. They admit they need a bat more than another arm. And while Sabathia would like to play in San Francisco, would he like to make less than Zito’s $18MM on the same team?
  • No surprise that Francisco Rodriguez is sitting atop the Mets closer wish-list. According to Heyman, he’s followed by Brian Fuentes, Kerry Wood, and then a combination of Trevor Hoffman and Huston Street, who would need to be dealt from the Rockies. Heyman doesn’t complete the list beyond those 4 options and notes that the Hoffman/Street option is a popular idea in the organization. For K-Rod, 3-4 years would be the Mets threshold.

Olney’s Latest: Manny, Peavy, Fuentes

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2008 at 10:20am CDT

ESPN’s Buster Olney has a bunch of new info in today’s blog.

  • Olney continues to wonder if Manny Ramirez and Scott Boras will "wave the white flag" and accept the Dodgers’ offer of arbitration.  It could result in a huge one-year salary, and the current market for Manny is not robust.  However, Peter Abraham said in July that a condition of Manny’s trade was that he would decline arbitration.  Did anyone else write this?  Hopefully a journalist will ask Boras about it soon.
  • Olney says the Cubs would love to have Adam Dunn in their lineup, but he’s a stretch as a full-time right fielder.  The Cubs are willing to sacrifice some defense in right, but how much?
  • Could Dunn or Pat Burrell wind up with the Rays on an affordable one-year deal?
  • The Cubs and Padres "have a basic framework in place" for a Jake Peavy deal built around third baseman Josh Vitters.  Things may pick up after the Cubs’ ownership situation is resolved.
  • The Astros don’t have a ton of flexibility to move their high-salaried stars, but Jose Valverde is one they can deal without restriction.  He’s due for a nice raise from this year’s $4.7MM.
  • Olney suggests the Rockies were wise to trade Matt Holliday when they did, or they might’ve gotten significantly less.
  • Olney speaks of "a belief within the Rockies’ organization" that Brian Fuentes could come back on a multiyear deal.  The Rockies could trade Huston Street in that case.
  • The Braves may push A.J. Burnett for an answer before C.C. Sabathia signs, in case the Yanks miss out on C.C. and come after Burnett.
  • Apparently there is "serious tension" between Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski and manager Jim Leyland.
  • Olney sees Rafael Furcal signing with the A’s.

Rockies Rumors: Embree, Shouse, Taveras, Atkins

By Tim Dierkes | November 26, 2008 at 11:40am CDT

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has the latest on the Rockies.

Manager Clint Hurdle says the Rockies are focused on adding pitching, particularly in the bullpen.  On the radar: Aaron Heilman, Alan Embree, Joe Beimel, and Brian Shouse.  Yesterday Joel Sherman said the Mets balked at the idea of swapping Heilman and Pedro Feliciano for Huston Street.

Renck adds that the Reds and White Sox remain interested in outfielder Willy Taveras.  On November 11th, Tracy Ringolsby said the Reds were not interested in Taveras despite reports.  As for Garrett Atkins, Renck believes the market will take shape after Casey Blake signs.

Mets Rumors: K-Rod, Dye, Vazquez

By Tim Dierkes | November 25, 2008 at 6:22pm CDT

6:22pm: According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, Minaya has reached out to K-Rod and Fuentes.  He says the Mets prefer free agency to trading.

We also have a rumor from Joel Sherman of the New York Post.  He says the Mets offered Aaron Heilman to the Rockies for Street shortly after Colorado acquired him.  The Rox wanted the Mets to add Pedro Feliciano, and the Mets refused.  MetsBlog has more insight into the team’s plans.

1:33pm: Rounding up today’s Mets rumors…

  • On Friday, David Lennon of Newsday said the Mets had received Francisco Rodriguez’s medical records.  He also had Omar Minaya saying the club’s doctors were looking it over.  However, Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post writes today that the Mets did not receive the records until yesterday afternoon.  According to Hubbuch, the Mets told Paul Kinzer they’ll get back to him after Thanksgiving regarding K-Rod.
  • Hubbuch names five other Mets targets: Brian Fuentes, Kerry Wood, Trevor Hoffman, J.J. Putz, and Huston Street.
  • Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News talked to Minaya, who said the Mets have not made offers to any free agents yet.
  • In case you missed it, Ken Rosenthal had several Mets nuggets in today’s column.  He said the Mets balked at Chicago’s asking price for Jermaine Dye, and aren’t enamored with Javier Vazquez.  Rosenthal believes the Rays’ Andy Sonnanstine "represents a more desirable target" for the Mets.
  • SI.com’s Jon Heyman rattles off a list of the Mets’ free agent targets, which does not include Manny Ramirez.

Mets Rumors: Castillo, Heilman, Putz

By Tim Dierkes | November 21, 2008 at 10:21am CDT

The latest on the Mets…

  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post says Luis Castillo met with the Mets and implored them to keep him.  Castillo said he’ll get into shape this winter.  The Mets will still consider trade possibilities, but a deal doesn’t seem likely.
  • David Lennon of Newsday reports that Aaron Heilman called Omar Minaya yesterday to request a move to the rotation.  The Mets are still opposed to it.  Lennon adds that the Mets have received Francisco Rodriguez’s medical records.  Sherman says the Mets don’t even want to do four years for K-Rod though.
  • Tracy Ringolsby says the Mets have targeted J.J. Putz as their priority.  ESPN’s Jayson Stark said the same yesterday.  With Putz set to earn just $5MM next year, the move would give the Mets the flexibility to fill other needs or add a free agent closer anyway.  Similarly, Shermans says the Mets "remain very interested in Huston Street."

Indians Rumors: Valverde, Street, Hudson

By Tim Dierkes | November 20, 2008 at 4:19pm CDT

Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer posted a few Indians nuggets in last night’s column.

  • GM Mark Shapiro says he hasn’t made any offers to free agents yet.  It sounds like payroll might land in the $75-80MM range, leaving the team with roughly $15MM to spend.
  • Shapiro admitted that he would explore a trade for Jose Valverde if the Astros closer is truly available.  Astros GM Ed Wade said yesterday, "I would love to see Jose here for a long time."  The ’Stros have him under team control for one more year, and there’s been speculation he could be dealt to save money.
  • The Indians may attempt to acquire Huston Street if the Rockies’ asking price comes down.
  • The Indians are interested in Orlando Hudson, who reportedly seeks a five-year, $50MM deal.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Burnett, Lowe, Peavy

By Tim Dierkes | November 19, 2008 at 8:25am CDT

Here’s a look at the latest from Ken Rosenthal.

  • Rosenthal says reports of the Blue Jays’ four-year, $54MM offer to A.J. Burnett are inaccurate – they’ve yet to make a proposal.  He’s on board with Kat O’Brien’s info from yesterday, noting Boston’s interest.
  • Scott Boras is apparently telling teams he wants "a Zito-type contract" for righty Derek Lowe.  Lowe is 35, while Zito was 28.  Is Boras implying that he wants $18MM a year?  Obviously Lowe will not find a seven-year offer.  ESPN’s Buster Olney says Boras wants five years for Lowe.
  • The Padres told the Yankees a Jake Peavy deal is possible even without Phil Hughes.  They’ve scouted Hughes anyway, but he’s off-limits.
  • The Rockies will sit back and listen on Garrett Atkins and Huston Street.  They don’t plan on signing a free agent to replace Matt Holliday.
  • The Mets want to add a righthanded bat, though they’re not high on Pat Burrell.

Closer Roundup: K-Rod, Fuentes, Wood, Hoffman

By Alex Walsh | November 16, 2008 at 6:35pm CDT

Joel Sherman of the New York Post takes a look at the sudden surplus of potentially available closers in major league baseball, a situation that certainly benefits the Mets considering their need to upgrade the bullpen this offseason.

Two free agent closers that seemed destined to retire with their 2008 teams, Trevor Hoffman and Kerry Wood, now appear to be more available than was expected in October. That pair, along with Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes, give the Mets and other teams several options in free agency.

Other relief pitchers with experience in the 9th inning have been recently mentioned in trade rumors. The list includes Huston Street, who may move again before the 2009 season begins, along with JJ Putz, Jose Valverde, and Bobby Jenks, mentions Sherman.

Sherman also provides a short list of teams, beyond the Mets, that may need a reliever with closing experience for 2009. The Texas Rangers, seemingly always short on pitching these days, may be a good fit for Kerry Wood; the Detroit Tigers, the St. Louis Cardinals, and most recently the Milwaukee Brewers, faced with the sudden retirement of Salomon Torres, are also in need of 9th inning help.

Sherman suggests Fuentes may be the favorite for the Mets’ closing job at this point.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Swisher, Wood, Hermida

By Tim Dierkes | November 14, 2008 at 9:28am CDT

A look at the newest column from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

  • Rosenthal believes the Nick Swisher trade is a prelude to other moves for the White Sox, and shouldn’t be judged in isolation.
  • Darren Oliver could follow Damaso Marte and re-sign quickly, as his market value is also diminished by his Type A status.
  • Texas native Kerry Wood is a good match for the Rangers, though they’re not going to want to do three years at $10MM per (I think).  Jim Hendry says Wood will always be welcome to come back to Chicago.  Rosenthal says the Rangers also have interest in Colorado’s Huston Street.
  • The Cubs and the Rays are two suitors for Florida’s Jeremy Hermida, though they’ve cleared enough payroll already to be deliberate with this one.
