  • Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse says that Jason Kendall was looking for $5MM to return to Milwaukee for another year. Yeah, good luck with that. No wonder why the Brewers went with Gregg Zaun.
  • Dan Uggla doesn't have any control over whether the Marlins trade him or not, but if they do, he hopes it happens sooner rather than later, according to Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post.
  • When asked about the hot stove, Reds' manager Dusty Baker said "there's not much of anything going on," reports MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.
  • Michael Silverman of The Boston Herald says that Pedro Martinez wants to pitch a full season in 2010, instead of going on the Roger Clemens plan (pitching in the second half only) again.
  • Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic says that the D-Backs' perfect world Winter Meetings scenario "involves them acquiring a cost-effective starting pitcher in a trade and then using their remaining payroll flexibility to upgrade other areas of the club."
  • According to WEEI.com's Alex Speier, Padres' GM Jed Hoyer said that given his (and new assistant Jason McLeod's) experience with the Red Sox, they have a “level of comfort” in any potential trade with them, moreso than with any other team.
  • Re-signing Andy Pettitte is the Yankees' top priority, says George A. King III of The NY Post.
  • MLB.com's Carrie Muskat says as many as three teams are interested in Milton Bradley, and Cubs' GM Jim Hendry will spend next week trying to find the best match.
  • Former Blue Jays' GM J.P. Ricciardi said that Roy Halladay wants to be traded, according to The Canadian Press. Ricciardi added that a "lot of these decisions are out of the general manager's hands as far as what ownership perceives as fan reaction and what the perception of the club (is) and the direction that they are going. I think any time you have a player of this magnitude, that's really an ownership call."
  • In addition to Justin Miller, the Dodgers also signed Prentice Redman to a minor league contract, according to Dylan Hernandez of The LA Times.
  • MLB.com's Steve Gilbert has the news of three players the Diamondbacks inked to minor league contracts: T.J. Beam, Drew Macias, and Carlos Corporan. All three received invites to Spring Training.
  • ESPN's Jayson Stark wrote about the five biggest plotlines going into the Winter Meetings next week, while Scott Miller of CBSSports.com has some pre-Winter Meetings chatter of his own.

Yankees Cutting Payroll, Bidding On Halladay?

9:40pm: Olney says the team's 2010 payroll has been set somewhere between $190-200M, and as always, "it is not a hard ceiling."

3:45pm: A tweet from ESPN's Buster Olney:

Yankees finished org. meetings — they're cutting payroll. I'm not sure yet by how much, but during season, expectation was to $185 million.

According to Cot's Baseball Contracts, the Yankees began the 2009 season at about $201MM.  My own rough estimate has the Yankees at about $170MM committed if Chad Gaudin, Sergio Mitre, and Chien-Ming Wang are non-tendered.  If they re-sign Andy Pettitte for $10MM, it might be tough to fit a top-end reliever and decent left fielder into a $185MM budget.  So maybe it'll go a little higher but still fall under $200MM.

In other Yankees rumor-news, SI's Jon Heyman says the Yankees will bid on Roy Halladay.  He reiterates that the Blue Jays want some combination of Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, Austin Jackson, and Jesus Montero.  Such an acquisition would make the payroll even tighter, but perhaps ownership would make an exception for Doc.

Odds & Ends: Oeltjen, Hensley, Gload, Halladay

Links for Friday, as team execs and media folk pack their bags for Monday's Winter Meetings in Indianapolis…

  • The Brewers signed Trent Oeltjen to a minor league deal, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.  Oeltjen, 27 in February, hit .303/.362/.500 in his third Triple A tour, playing the outfield corners.
  • Brewers assistant GM Gord Ash spells out why his team won't be acquiring Roy Halladay, talking to McCalvy.
  • MLB.com's Joe Frisaro tweets six minor league free agents signed by the Marlins, including Jesse Foppert, Vinny Rottino, and Hector Luna.
  • The Pirates expressed "mild interest" in free agent pitcher Clay Hensley, according to Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  Hensley, 30, spent the year at Triple A in the Astros and Marlins organizations, posting a 3.56 ERA in 124 innings.
  • Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post feels there's "still a good chance [Ross] Gload returns [to the Marlins] with a two-year deal."
  • Darren Dreifort's five-year, $55MM deal tops Jeff Passan's list of the ten worst contracts of the 2000s for Yahoo.
  • Joe Pawlikowski of River Ave. Blues explains why the Yankees probably won't sign Rafael Soriano.
  • In his Winter Meetings preview for AOL FanHouse, Ed Price says there was some discussion about a Tigers-Diamondbacks trade involving Edwin Jackson and Max Scherzer.
  • ESPN's Buster Olney talked to rival executives who say the Tigers have not aggressively shopped Curtis Granderson.
  • Olney doesn't think the Mariners will pay up for Jason Bay.  He believes the Red Sox are "controlling the market" for Bay and Matt Holliday.
  • Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the Cardinals are "increasingly weighing spreading what it would cost to retain Holliday over several players."  Bernie Miklasz of the P-D feels the Cards are "enacting their exit strategy from the Holliday sweepstakes."  I would not be surprised to see the Cardinals make their best offer soon - let's say $110MM over six years – and entirely move on if Scott Boras rejects it.
  • SI's Jon Heyman tweets that Nick Johnson is "drawing interest from the Giants, maybe Braves, and a half-dozen more."
  • MLB.com's Corey Brock talked to former Padres GM Kevin Towers, who will meet with the Mets, Yankees, Mariners, and Red Sox at the Winter Meetings.
  • ESPN's Keith Law isn't impressed with the Phillies' Placido Polanco signing.  My initial impression upon hearing about the signing is that no other team would've valued Polanco that highly.
  • MLB.com's Joe Frisaro tweets that other teams have been more aggressive on Jamey Carroll than the Marlins.  Other Carroll suitors include the Rockies, Red Sox, Angels, Dodgers, A's, Rangers, Pirates, Reds and Indians.

Angels Still In On John Lackey

The Angels "remain heavily in the mix" for John Lackey, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.  Rosenthal says the Angels' renewed their efforts to re-sign Lackey at the behest of owner Arte Moreno, though GM Tony Reagins denied any change in the team's course.

Rosenthal lays out three other factors that might be motivating the Angels to consider re-upping Lackey: an unappealing asking price for Roy Halladay, uncertainty with Scott Kazmir, and the Mariners' interest in Lackey. 

If the Angels do allow Lackey to leave, they'll gain two draft picks as compensation.  A couple of big-market clubs might be out of the Lackey bidding – Gordon Edes recently wrote that Lackey is not a Red Sox target, and Bill Shaikin said the Dodgers won't be in pursuit.  The New York teams haven't been ruled out, while the Nationals and Brewers could be dark horses.

Mets Notes: Delgado, Johnson, Lackey, Halladay

Tonight on SNY's Mets Hot Stove, SI's Jon Heyman delivered his latest on the Mets:

  • The Mets still like Carlos Delgado and continue to keep an eye on him this winter.  Heyman says that the market for Delgado is rather weak as there are many DH-type players on the open market.  In his look at Free Agent DHs, Tim noted that there appear to be no more than eight available slots in total.
  • Meanwhile, the Mets are not interested in free agent first baseman Nick Johnson, because they believe he has declined considerably in terms of range and power.  Nicky J hit just 8 HRs in 2009, compared to a career-high 23 HRs in 2006, his last healthy season.
  • Their interest in John Lackey remains strong, but as of right now it doesn't look like the Mets are "heavily involved" with the 32-year-old hurler.  Heyman believes that he will garner close to $100MM.
  • Heyman says that he would be "shocked" if the Mets pulled off a deal for Roy Halladay at the winter meetings.

Olney On Halladay, Mets, White Sox

As ESPN.com's Buster Olney notes, the Yankees and Red Sox are hesitant to give top prospects up for Roy Halladay, since they'd have to pay him like a free agent to keep him around long-term. But some scouts aren't sure Joba Chamberlain will be able to improve his control, so Olney wonders if the Yankees might consider including him in a potential Halladay trade. Here are the rest of Olney's rumors:

  • The Mets appear poised to sign two or three veterans for $5-7MM per season. We know they're interested in Bengie Molina and they're looking for pitchers, but they have other needs, too.
  • Olney expects the Mets to land a starter like Randy Wolf, Jason Marquis or Joel Pineiro.
  • The Mets have discussed Mike Cameron, who would consider playing left or right, and Xavier Nady.
  • Olney hears that the White Sox don't have much payroll flexibility this offseason.

Roy Halladay Rumors: Wednesday

2:09pm: SI's Jon Heyman sees a potential Red Sox-Yankees battle brewing for Halladay.  He says the Blue Jays told the Yankees they're interested in Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, Jesus Montero, and Austin Jackson (not necessarily all four).

10:22am: Joel Sherman of the New York Post terms the Yankees as "bystanders rather than aggressive pursuers" when it comes to Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay.  The Yankees remain "averse to giving up both high-end prospects and a top-of-the-market contract extension to secure one player."  Some members of the Yankee front office would prefer to acquire Doc but not extend him.  Speaking in general terms, Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos told MLB.com's Jordan Bastian he'd prefer not to give an extension window in a trade.  Sherman also learned that the Blue Jays "have yet to divulge exactly what it would take to land Halladay."

As for Halladay's Spring Training deadline for a trade, Sherman talked to "outside executives" who don't take it entirely seriously.  Regarding agent Jeff Berry's comments to ESPN about the deadline, Anthopoulos told Bastian, "I just want to hear it for myself and talk to him."  Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun notes that George Bell issued the Blue Jays a similar ultimatum at the 1987 Winter Meetings.

Odds & Ends: Kuo, DeRosa, Dye, Blue Jays

With all the arbitration decisions flying around today, we haven't had time for an Odds & Ends until now.

  • Diamond Leung tweeted last night that the Yankees "signed Taiwanese 18-year-old infielder Fu-Lin Kuo to six-figure bonus."  Taiwan Baseball says Kuo received about $150K.
  • Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has the Cardinals, Phillies, Mets, and Giants as suitors for Mark DeRosa.  ESPN's Buster Olney heard that a few teams are concerned with DeRosa's range at third base.
  • Fungoes shows us "when the hot stove is the hottest," graphically.  Looks about right to me…peaks in December, stays hot in January.
  • A.J. Burnett talked to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News about Roy Halladay potentially being traded.
  • Juan Castro will take his physical Thursday according to Andy Martino of the Philadelphia Inquirer; if he passes, his one-year deal with the Phillies will be official.
  • ESPN's Jerry Crasnick wrote about potential fits for Jermaine Dye, noting that the Yankees have discussed him internally.  Crasnick says geography will not be a major factor for Dye.
  • MLB.com's Jordan Bastian tweeted comments from Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos regarding their search for a catcher.  Anthopoulos is eyeing some potential non-tenders.  Dioner Navarro and John Buck come to mind, with Kelly Shoppach going to the Rays.
  • The market for Miguel Tejada should be decent now that he certainly will not cost a draft pick.  SI's Jon Heyman tweets that the Cardinals, Phillies, Giants, Rangers, and Astros are interested.  Rangers?
  • MLB.com's Adam McCalvy reports that the Brewers officially announced their minor league deal with John Halama today.
  • Nick Green's agent Tom O'Connell tells Ken Davidoff of Newsday his client is drawing "significant interest" on Major League contracts.

Red Sox Ask Pedroia About Playing Shortstop

3:09pm: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe learned from a team exec that the Red Sox will exhaust their free agent and trade options before turning to Pedroia at shortstop.

10:13am: The Red Sox asked Dustin Pedroia if he'd be able to play shortstop, according to ESPN's Peter Gammons.  Pedroia's thoughts:

"They've put it out there and I've told them I'm all for it. I can do it. I can't wait for Tito [Terry Francona] to call me and ask, 'Can you do it?' I can do it. I really want to do it."

Right now it appears that the Red Sox are just considering the switch for Pedroia.  As Gammons notes, shifting Pedroia would create flexibility, allowing the Sox to pass on Marco Scutaro and pursue Orlando Hudson or even Brandon Phillips.

As you know, other offseason considerations for the Red Sox include trading Mike Lowell and acquiring a third baseman, signing Jason Bay or Matt Holliday, and a possible Roy Halladay trade.  Gammons downplays the idea of Boston acquiring Doc, saying the chances of them trading Clay Buchholz or Casey Kelly are minimal at best.

Roy Halladay Sets Deadline For Trade

2:39pm: Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports talked to Halladay's other agent Greg Landry, who suggested the pitcher will not rule out any teams or contractual scenarios.  Landry said each situation will be looked at on its own merits.

7:50am: Roy Halladay "will not approve any proposed deal after he reports to spring training," ESPN's Buster Olney learned from his representatives.  The goal is to avoid a media frenzy during the season.  So, the option of waiting until the trade deadline is out.  Given the uncertain nature of draft pick compensation, I'd say Halladay is now highly likely to be traded during the offseason.

One of Doc's agents, Jeff Berry, wouldn't say whether his client will require a contract extension upon a trade.  Berry explained:

"Obviously, there are recent contract markers for a pitcher of this magnitude.  That being said, each potential trade situation will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, with a critical factor being the legitimate opportunity for Roy to pursue multiple World Series championships."

A source of Olney's believes Halladay would accept a deal to the Red Sox, Yankees, Phillies, or Angels.  You have to think the field isn't limited to those four clubs though.
