Brian Giles Re-Signs With Padres

The Unofficial MLB Blog is reporting that Brian Giles has re-signed with the Padres.  The news came via KGTV-10 in San Diego, according to the blog.  The deal is said to be for just three years and $30MM with a $6MM option for 2009.  Looks like it wasn't all about the money for Giles.

Unofficial MLB is the only published report of the signing at this point, and I have known them to be reliable in the past.  I'll get you more info when I have it.

Update: Ted Leitner and Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton are also reporting the signing in San Diego.  Apparently Kevin Towers sent an apology to Giles's agent yesterday and a deal was struck quickly.

Thanks to John and Dave

Out of curiosity, what did he apologize for?

For spurning the same 3/30m offer which Giles originally proposed to the Padres. All along, Towers seemed to be turning his nose up at Giles. Weird how this turned around.

Monger, you have any updates on Furcal? Word from the online site of the Athens Banner-Herald is that Furcal and Andruw Jones were seen at the Hawks game Wednesday night sitting with VP Dominique Wilkins. Thoughts?

it's 3 years at $9 million a year each with an option for a 4th for an addition $9 or a $3 million buyout. So the contract is going to be either 3 years $30 million or 4 years $36 million... let's get it correct please

get a life buddy.

Just because Furcal and Andrew Jones went to a basketball doesn't meant he's staying in Atlanta. They could be saying their last goodbyes. They are friends for heaven's sake. Friends with money go to basketball games and sit in the owner's box.

At least he's not just in it for the money, he could have taken a lot more from different clubs. Gives Padres fans something to look forward to.

actually it's andrUw. he is from curacao you know. don't just guess at the players names please. waah!

ESPN has the Giles deal at 3/30.

Don't have anything new yet on Furcal, but I'm digging.

ESPN radio 1000 in Chicago keeps reporting that the Dodgers are pursuing Furcal pretty hard now.

I still think it comes down to Cubs at 5 years, and the Braves with 4 & less money but familiar surroundings.

I glad he stayed in SD and not go to STL.

yes, I agree....
It seems as though Jocketty misses out on FA after FA, but seems to put the missing pieces together somehow.

Nothing worse than being a Cub fan living 10 minutes from St.Louis, having to hear & re-live every Cubs blunder & Cardinal victory.

Hopefully Jocketty keeps missing out on their top free agent hopefuls, then pick up some free agents that are not good or turns out to be busts. Which is what I think A.J. Burnett will be because he will take up so much salary. Sure he will get you 10-15 wins a year, but he is definatley not worth the money he will get.
