« Heyman: Twins Only Offered Santana Four Years | Main | Rumor Royalty: Dan Graziano (Yankees) »

Francisco Cordero Now A Red

Ken Rosenthal reports that the Reds have come to an agreement with Francisco Cordero. The terms: four years and $46 million, with a $11 million club option for 2012. It's still pending a physical. Rosenthal points out that this is the largest four-year deal ever given to a closer.

The Brewers had offered four years at $42 million. There was no mention of whether Cordero gave them a chance to match the Reds offer.

I'm not sure this brings the Reds much closer to contending. Yes, it's nice to have some security in the ninth inning, but you need guys who can get you there with a lead. The Reds would figure to need another quality starter. But in the weak NL Central, who knows?

JayTheRed,

Although the LgAvg RP was 4.06 ~ its factoring all the long relievers, mop-up guys, set-up, etc… I don’t know what the average “Closer” ERA was, but it has to be about 3.0ish or they would have lost their job (exception is guys like JoBo from Cle who got the high ERA in non-save opps).

Well, Cordero has really only been a closer for 4 years ~ and in those 4 he has only seen an ERA really under 3.0 once (yeah, 3.9something isn’t really “under”) ~ and that was the first of the 4 years.

Then, Cordero has only seen a ERA under 3 twice in his career, period (2002 & 2004). Add to it a WHIP normally in the 1.30-1.35 range and you have yourself one questionable Closer going forward…

And everyone,
Seriously, every few posts someone mentions it and it really should be pointed out:

*Losing Linebrink is probably a good, not bad, thing for Mil!*

Look, Linebrink posted a 3.6Ish ERA for Mil after coming from SD, BUT that is a huge fluke of a number and really a result of the rookies and scrubs, not to mention Sept-callups, from the teams he was facing. 18 of his 27 games with Mil were against sub-500 clubs, and he faced SanDiego as they were dropping and Phillies right before they took off… In actuality Scott had a 1.5 WHIP over those 2 months with Mil, and a fairly miserable Batting line against of .276/.349/.418…

As a whole on the season though, Linebrink’s numbers break down like this:
.176/.235/.308 against, 0.896 WHIP ~ At Petco Park (where he pitched 25G)
.292/.360/.483 against, 1.567 WHIP ~ Away from Petco Park as a whole…
~ as you can see, away from Petco its like he faced Ken Griffey Jr in every single AB.
Oh and:
.255/.330/.396 against, 1.372 WHIP ~ The NL Average for relievers as a whole…

He has a 3-4 year span where his H, BB, WHIP, ERA and HR have gone through the roof (in comparison to what he was) while the SO have dropped a bunch… His arm is taxed!

Losing him just doesn’t hurt the Brewers like people are trying to claim…

JayTheRed,

Many of the Cubs fans here underesitmate your team. I am more worried about the Reds this year than another team in the Central.

However, you are a poor judge of talent if you think Encarnacion, Freel, Hamilton, and (I hope you meant Cueto) a Double-A prospect nets Santana. For starters, Freel is on the 60-DL. Hamilton has his own DL and D problems. Encarnacion is a nice player, but pretty average. Cueto is a nice prospect but to package him with two walking time bombs and an average 3B won't even come close to get to Santana. The Dodgers could come in and offer Kershaw/Kemp and you lose (The Twins have said they want more than that by the way).

Don't sell yourself short though, you could get Santana, but you would have to trade Cueto, Votto, and Bruce.

It doesn't matter when teams last won the World Series. Do you think the Cardinals have a good chance in '08 because of '06? Should we all fear the White Sox in '05? Get a grip.

IM sorry for 100 years of losing.

Cueto is supposed to be better than Bailey. He is a VERY good pitching prospect. If EE, Hamilton, Freel and Cueto DIDNT get Santana, it would be a joke. Twins would take that, but the Reds wouldnt off it either.

"99Cueto is supposed to be better than Bailey"

thats incorrect.

Tyler: There is no crying in baseball! Poor Brewers, they deserve so much better. The Reds may well regret this signing, but unlike the Booers they are at least trying. The Reds still need a starting pitcher or two, but this is at least a good start.
Go Reds!

I don't underestimate the Reds, or any other NL Central Team. In fact, the teams are well balanced and with the Cardinals & Astros finally down a little, any of the Reds, Brewers, Cubs, Cardinals, and Astros can win the division any given year. The Cubs have the most money by far, and should have an advantage, but unfortunately, they're the Cubs.

I have no particular interest in flaming on this board, but as a Brewer fan, I am happy that the Reds signed Cordero and ECSTATIC that the White Sox signed Linebrink. This is not to say that these guys are bums, because they're not, I just think that 11+ million is way too much money for a budget-concious team like Milwaukee to spend, and Linebrink's contract was crazy IMO.

In a perfect world, I would've loved to have kept Corderon but the price was just too high.
