« Rangers Would Require Apology From Rogers | Main | Rivera Wants Four Years »
Jake Peavy will soon add a Cy Young to his resume, and the Padres would like to explore a contract extension with him. Under his current contract, Peavy will earn $6.5MM in '08 and $11MM in '09 once he wins the award. The Padres would like to extend him for the 2010 and 2011 seasons and possibly more.
Peavy realizes the Padres won't give him the $18MM+ per year he could earn on the free market. But an extension for 2010-11 in the range of $32-35MM could work.
It's been assumed that any team trading for Peavy this winter would have him for two seasons. However, that isn't the case - Tom Krasovic says he could opt for free agency after '08 as a player traded during a multiyear deal. I assume Dan Haren has the same right, but Erik Bedard does not. That certainly bumps up Bedard's value.
Krasovic also adds that the Padres have their eye on Jim Edmonds and Ryan Church as center field options. The Padres would expect Edmonds to be a salary dump and the Cards to throw in some cash. Meanwhile Jim Bowden has a high asking price for Church.

i hope the padres give this man what he has earned over the last few years, as far as his skills go, he is making less then minimum wage

Mighty generous of the Padres:
"Give us a player, you pay most of his moderate contract ($8 M) and we'll let him play for us."
I don't see how any team can turn down paying a player to play for another team.

Did you know you can add wins by ... attitude?

Hmm. I'll have to check Baseball Prospectus again, but I don't think they have to a statistical category for attitude yet. They better get on that.

"Tom Krasovic says he could opt for free agency after '08 as a player traded during a multiyear deal."
My recollection is that the collective bargaining agreement removed this provision last year. What am I missing?

Even with SD expressing "interest" in Ryan Church, is their any package possible to bring Peavy to Washington? I'm thinking it would take someting like' Church, Detwiler & Marrero/Willems if not more (maybe a lot more?)
Still, how many games beter would the Nats be with Guzman back for a full year, Johnson back for a full year, Willy Mo Pena for a whole year AND adding Andruw Jones in CF and Peavy leading a rotation of with Patterson, Hill, Bergmann and Redding.
Is that a 90+ win team?

Is it Colby Rasmus time in St.Louis?

HL, it's called a salary dump.
Edmonds makes $8M and is worth less than that, so he has negative value.
So to get rid of him, the Cardinals would have to include money.
This happens often, you know?

Wow, did someone just imply that Christian Guzman being healthy for a full season would be a GOOD thing for the Nationals?
Posted by: bobo | November 15, 2007 at 10:24 AM
Yes, but that same person implied that Peavy would be on the Nationals, so... consider that.

CJ, the clause about being traded during a multiyear deal is only removed for contracts signed after the new agreement went into place. Peavy's contract was signed in '05, the new agreement in '06.

CJ,
You're right, the most recent CBA did remove that. There was some type of grandfather clause, but (a) it may not apply to Peavy's '09 option, (b) Peavy only receives free agency if he demands a trade and none is made, and (c)those demanding a trade must complete an additional 3 years of service time to the new team. It's unlikely Peavy invokes that rule, as it would keep him out of free agency until after 2011.
This happened most recently with Javier Vasquez in the NYY-ARI trade for Randy Johnson. Vasquez demanded a trade, was sent to the White Sox, who then signed him to an extension covering the three years he had to complete.

Peavy signed this deal, so he should stick to it! Before this deal everyone was worried bout his delivery since it is very strenuous on his arm and the padres have a history of tommy johns (our #1 draft picks in '03, '05, '07, and estes). I would hope we can get a deal done next season, but right now we need to focus on extending greene, filling out outfield, and the back end of our rotation. We can worry bout peavy and the bullpen later.

A biased hope for next year's lineup:
Brian Giles
Kevin Kouzmanoff
Adrian Gonzalez
Andruw Jones
Khalil Greene
Chase Headley
Josh Bard
Matt Antonelli
Kouzmanoff's high BA & OBP for the past 5 months of '07 make him an intriguing choice for the 2 hole. I'd also like to put him in LF to get Headley into the lineup. I realize Andruw is a longshot, so that's more of a wish, then my actual guess.
Jason Kendall
Paul McAnulty
Craig Stansberry
Jason Lane
Scott Hairston
Cheap and effective.
Jake Peavy
Chris Young
Greg Maddux
Matt Clement
Bartolo Colon
Trevor Hoffman
Heath Bell
Joe Thatcher
Cla Meredith
Clay Hensley
Justin Hampson
Kevin Cameron
Ideally, KT pulls off a Gagne like move by signing Colon, having him dominate in Petco, all the meanwhile Will Inman burns through AA & AAA and Colon gets dealt somewhere for some solid prospects.
I realize signing Andruw Jones and both Clement & Colon are longshots though.
