Its so obvious - Reyes for Eaton. Phils could eat some $$$ and both sides could throw in propsects to even things out a little.
Eaton would do better in that ballpark and is cheaper relative to the drech out there at $8m per...

Why would anyone give Josh Fogg 3/21? Id much rather keep Reyes then give that type of money to Fogg or Lohse or any of these guys. Am I in the minority in this thinking?

Who are the Cardinals willing to give up for a decent SP?
Posted by: jessethebody | December 05, 2007 at 07:45 AM
re: jessethebody, everything i read cites their OF depth and bullpen depth plus reyes. If we don't trade Rolen I won't be sad, I would like to see what he can do, plus the defense will always be there. I mean this guy was close to MVP in 04. DAMN YOU HEE SEOP CHOI!!!

Choi might be the most valuable cub in the last 10 years. He hurts Rolen for years and then we trade him straight up for Derrek Lee!?!?? I love that guy.

I don't understand the Cardinals obsession with old pitchers. Do they think that they can contend now?

drzimo, I'm wondering the same thing. I'm a die-hard Cards fan and I'm wondering why in the hell we're considering signing Josh Fogg. I see another Kip Wells situation and God knows that's all we need.

This is apparently the price a team pays for neglecting the farm system for so long.

@Coryjwilson, no this is what the team pays for having Walt Jocketty as our GM for so long...

That's a joke.. Adam Eaton was one of the worst if not the worst starter in baseball last season. Anthony Reyes sucked hard last year too but at least he's cheap, young and still has potential. That'd be one of the worst deals I've ever heard.
And coryjwilson, the reason that the farm system was negected for so long was because of Walt Jocketty. The guy essentially depended on trades and free agency to build his team, practically no homegrown players other than Pujols and Duncan. Sorry Cardinal fans but your team is gonna be bad for a while. There are just too many holes to fill and no young guys to fill 'em. And no, Josh Fogg wont save the day.

Jocketty didn't run the minor league system; the Cardinal organization has had at least three different people (and maybe four) in charge of draft/development during Walt's tenure, none of whom produced results. One might argue that Walt was influential in determining who was put in charge of that area but blaming Walt outright is a misnomer.
Walt Jocketty built a successful team over the past decade in spite of a pisspoor minor league system, and that's to his credit.

Walt also made some piss poor trades. Especially, for Mulder. Of course, Walt didn't oversee the farm system but he drained it.

the cards actually have good prospects. i want tejada

"practically no homegrown players other than Pujols " I'm a Cubs fan...but man...I wish my farm system was that bad.
The cards have 1 blue chip (Rasmus) and Anderson is a top 5 catching prospect in the league...probably. Their system isn't good...but it could be worse. Jocketty was a good GM...he wasn't great with the farm though. Trading Haren will probably haunt him for a long time. Other than that trade though, I can't think of another real bad one.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | December 05, 2007 at 07:19 PM
Aduncaroo, if you were implying that the Cubs farm system is worse than the Cardinals I would have to disagree. We got a blue chipper of our own now in Vitters, as well as a decent amount of other good young guys in Tony Thomas, Tyler Colvin, Jose Ceda, Donald Veal, Jeff Samardzija, and plus the Cubs have a ton of good young guys already on their roster in Pie, Hill, Marmol, Soto, Murton, Marshall, Gallagher, Hart, Cedeno, and Patterson.
