D'Backs Trade Quentin To White Sox For Chris Carter

According to MLB Radio via MetsBlog, the D'Backs will send outfielder Carlos Quentin to the White Sox for first baseman Chris Carter.  Here's the MLB.com link.  Kenny Williams and Josh Byrnes have gotten together on many trades in the past.

Carter was recently ranked Chicago's 4th best prospect by Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein, and their best position player prospect.  The 21 year-old first baseman will try his hand at High A in 2008.  Goldstein calls him a "true slugger with tremendous strength and power to all fields," while noting that he is poor defensively even at first base.  Carter's a few years off, so Conor Jackson doesn't have to worry quite yet.

Quentin didn't have a place on the D'Backs after they signed Eric Byrnes to a contract extension.  2007 was a lost year for Quentin as he dealt with shoulder and hamstring issues.  He plans to have labrum surgery to fix the shoulder this winter.  The 25 year-old has mashed at Triple A and knows how to take a walk - he is exactly what the White Sox needed.  Faith in Kenny Williams has been restored, perhaps.

It's tough to pick a winner here; I like the deal for both clubs.  I love it for the White Sox, who had a strong need for position-playing young talent.  The D'Backs did well getting Carter, though they weren't able to spin Quentin into a starting pitcher.  Quentin wouldn't have gotten a chance to rebuild value with Arizona at the big league level in 2008 anyway.  Yahoo's Jeff Passan is not impressed with the move for Arizona.

I love this deal for chicago.

Nice work KW.

Quentin has a ton of upside.

yes! young major league ready talent! Carter could be good, but hes years away from being in the bigs. hopefully quentin can actually stay healthy. looks like the sox found their LF'er for the next few years.

Great job KW. Nothing like trading away a future all-star for another failed prospect from some other team's system. It is Chris Young all over. Brilliant. Boy, the Southsiders are really making some impressive moves to compete with their Central Division rivals. I must say, I am thrilled to death. I may just go and by season tickets. Sox will finish last this year--guaranteed. What the F&@%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So does this mean that Owens shifts over to CF and Quentin plays left? If so, this news sucks for Aaron Rowand.

they were going to finish in the bottom regardless of this deal or not. Sox have NO corner OF potential that is near major league ready. that is why this deal makes sense.

Dbacks fulfilled their quota of players named Chris Carter. That was a scary few months.

So does this mean that Fields is definitely at third, spelling a definite trade of Crede?

Rowand was never coming back to Chicago. Get over the dreams of that happening.

ahh more prospect for prospect trading

I love it

anyone dreaming of signing Rowand to a 5 year deal was having a nightmare

Not only does Quentin know how to take a walk, he apparently knows how to step into one as well--19 HBP in less than a full season's worth of plate appearances.

Aduncaroo,
that has to mean either A. Crede is gone, or B. Fields is being used in a bigger package to acquire a star. obviously A. is a lot more likely. And yes, this is great because it puts to an end the speculation of rowand. he was great with the sox, but hes not 75 million dollars worth of great and not the highest payed player on your team great either.

I don't know how Tim can say he's not sure who got the better deal here - Carter has only played at low A ball. 90%+ of the top prospects at low A never even get a cup of coffee in the majors.

If Quentin even turns into just an average big league starter the Sox got the better part, easily.

@Jay107

I can't say I was ever dreaming of Rowand going to Chicago. Just stating that this limits his choices now.

In addition, I agree that he deserves nothing close to 5 years. 3-4 max.

I see Rowand going to whoever trades for Johan. No way the Yanks are gonna be happy with Damon in CF or the Red Sox with Crisp in CF. The Yanks especially would be a good fit, his all out style of play would be a throwback to some of the other key players they have had in the past and it could help possibly light a fire under the entire team.

It is hard to say who won this deal because Quentin was expendable for the D-Backs and they got a very good prospect in return. Yes, Carter might never contribute to the big league club, but seems to have more upside than Quentin who has been struggling lately.

The Yankees don't go big on this contract for Rowand...

I see them going for Cameron at a lesser price and lesser year requirement.

the price is way too big for Rowand -- I love the way he plays...but he's an injury waiting to happen. We already have that in damon..

ARod is going to cost 27 mil, Johan is probably going to get a HUGE extension, and you still think they are going to give a big contract to Rowand? I don't know man...they have a ton of money, but that seems crazy to me.

I like this deal for both teams

AZ - No loss as they have enough OFs. They get a good prospect for the future.

CWS - Fill the OF void, get a young prospect. Trade a future prospect for a current prospect.

As a Whitesox fan I love this. We suddenly have a solid core of youth (Jenks, Quentin, Fields, Richar, Floyd, Danks, Gio, Eggy). Now if 4 of them can have solid seasons then I'll stop worrying about our future.

there is no way in hell the sox sign rowand for cf

just no way in hell

additionally,

I remember when Quentin was considered a big-time prospect...

Maybe he gets healthy and pulls a Josh Hamilton resurgence.

If Melky goes, the Yanks would only look at Jones or Cameron for a year or two. Or trade a couple minor league pitchers for DeJesus.

Jackson/Gardner should be ready in a year anyway.

I don't know much about Carter but Quentin's solid. Nice trade for the Sox :)

Absolutely agree on Rowand. He's basically had 2 good seasons his entire career and if anyone gives him (which I think someone will) 5 years at anything more then 10-11 million, they're out of there mind.

As for this deal, I like it for my palehose. Quentin has the ability to be a very serviceable outfielder in the bigs. He might start off a little slow but I don't see him being a waste/bust. Sucks to move someone with the talents of Carter, but as someone mentioned, he raked at high/low A ball, nothing to get too excited about. Better off getting something to help now with guys like Dye, Konerko, Thome and Cabrera.

Forgot to mention, the bad side is the move pretty much ends my hope of adding Jason Bay. :(

And yes, I know it was a huge longshot.

Carter is in the Mold of the typical player who can hit but doesnt really have a position on the field so they threw him at first. hes got the potential to be a good hitter, but hes supposed to be a butcher in the field. heres a youtube video of him at BP.

I like the deal a lot for the ChiSox, seems like the DBacks sold low on Quentin... but I dont know anything about Chris Carter except what's in this post.

Quentin had a pretty impressive HR/AB ratio in his first half season in the bigs (1:18.4 ab's). I like his chances of continuing to hit for power in a good hitters park like U.S Cellular if he finally gets some consistent at bats again.

Not a bad lineup their putting together there:

Owens, CF
Cabrera, SS
Konerko, 1B
Thome, DH
Dye, RF
Pierzynski, C
Fields, 3B
Quentin, LF
Anyone, 2B

"Nothing like trading away a future all-star for another failed prospect from some other team's system. It is Chris Young all over. "

WHAT?? You are kidding me right?? Explain to me how trading a star CF ( Young) for a pitcher who had a 2007 of 15-7 200+inn, 200+K's is the same for trading a minor leaguer for a minor leaguer?? Oh yeah, its not the same. Unbelievable.

Confusing! Red Sox have a 1b prospect named Chris Carter too (the player they got for Wily Mo)

Hmm, Did Diamondbacks traded their own prospect name Chris Carter for WIly Mo Pena trade earlier in this season? Now they want another Chris Carter who also plays 1st base? Something is very fishy going on here? It seems like Diamondbacks are helping Redsox since Dbacks Gm are friends with Theo Epstein.

Isnt it weird that the Dbacks traded a different Chris Carter to the other Sox a couple months ago? ow they get Chris Carter number 2 from the other sox. Interesting.

You guys beat me too the punch.

Wow…

Quentin has been rumored for a while so its not a surprise he was dealt ~ the shocking part comes in the fact that they didn’t get anything to help the club today though, a club that was in the playoffs as it was. I would think a bull-pen arm on top of the Sng-A kid would have been a much better move for Arz…

Good job to KW though; this is a deal which could help a lot and at worst wont hurt your club for 3-4 years if Carter ever even does anything on the big stage. When you have very little to actually deal with and can still trade for a good player, you must get props…

It was three-team trade between Dbacks, Nationals, Redsox.

Nationals got Wily Mo Pena
Redsox got Carter
Dbacks got a pitcher in return

Are you sure this isn't the retired wide receiver from Minnesota?? I think he would have great soft hands for first base.

that was Cris Carter.

Dbacks GM is trying to cover up his mistakes something here. He knows that He gave away Chris Carter for free to his Friend Theo and Boston Redsox.

The Mystery player you guys are talking about in the Chris Carter trade with Boston is Emiliano Fruto.

I hope you WSox fans don't get too excited about Quentin! Injury wasn't the only reason Carlos didn't find playing time in Arizona

what kind of arm does quentin have from left, and what's his speed like. i didn't see much of him last season?

Excellent deal for the Sox. Chris Carter is at least 2-3 years away from the bigs where he's blocked by Konerko anyway.

If Quentin can stay healthy, he's our LF and vastly better than Owens.

Even if it's a Owens/Quentin platoon, this also frees up money to go after a bigger-name player for CF, though I'm not totally sold on Rowand returning.

whitesoxfan424.. Q possesses an average to above average arm. He won't lead the league in assists but he won't be horrible in the OF either. Q's weakness is the holes in his bat. The guy can kill fastballs. He struggles heavily with breaking stuff. So I imagine Q will set the world on fire in the American League for the first month or so. Once they see he can't hit a breaking ball, expect Q to struggle again.

AngryTick,

Also possibly needing to be added to the "So I imagine Q will set the world on fire in the American League for the first month or so" line is the fact that the Indians were heavily scouting him last year hoping to pull him in mid-season. The Tribe isnt short on breaking-ball pitchers; so when its added to the scouting they have already done it, it might not even take a month or so...

This is the kind of thing that put KW on top 10 GM lists before 2007. He traded a guy that, while I looked at closely and had high hopes for, has no place in the NL and will likely be traded as C-Jax fills out his role in AZ. He could be a .900 OPS guy, but Quentin has a higher chance of it considering how far he's already made it. If Quentin's left labrum gets healthy, watch out. His OPS translated from the minors to U.S. Cellular could be pretty good, and he's apparently a good fielder so...

The Sox probably will have a much better offense with Quentin and Fields replacing Podsednik, a bad Crede, Cintron, and *ahem* Andy Gonzalez. Granted, Crede is as good as they come and Podsednik had a ton of range for a left fielder and made a lot of plays thaty most corner outfielders don't make. Too bad Dye has the range of a first basemen. Now if only Ryan Sweeney could fill out his power(which I expect him to, sooner or later) the White Sox could have a nice little lineup next year.
