Dallas McPherson Signs With Marlins

Ah, now some of the free agents are moving off the shelves.  The Marlins signed Dallas McPherson to a one-year deal worth $425K.  Barely above the minimum; he must've liked the opportunity.

He'll join Jose Castillo and Jorge Cantu in a battle royale to replace Miguel Cabrera at third base.  Tough shoes to fill, eh?  Who knows, maybe that 30 HR power is still in McPherson's bat somewhere.

With the McPherson and Ensberg signings today, Corey Koskie is pretty much the only remaining available free agent third baseman.

This signing almost guarantees my Marlins 1st place in the NL East!

If you have a bad-ass first name like "Dallas," how can you not hit 25 homers and knock in over 80...

The Giants should have been all over this, good signing.

rock...

The did speak to him right away, but apparently Boras was looking for big $$$

Wonder what he ended up signing for.

Id be interested to know. Ive always like Dallas, I still think he can be a good MLB player

This is solid.

The Marlins are building another young, powerful core.

If Dallas can get his swing back, he could put up some strong numbers.

Sucks for Cantu & Castillo...

This kid is only 27 and hit 40hrs in AA and AAA in 04'
Id take him for a bench player to play 1st and 3rd...

He's actually 25, not 27

I appologize, you're right. He is 27, or will be at seasons start.

I looked on thebaseballcube and since he didnt play in 2007 , the last age I saw listed was 25 in 2006

Double CRAP! What the hell Sabean.

What a perfect fit. A once highly touted ballplayer who seemingly missed his chance, is turning 27 and has a no pressure opportunity with little viable competition. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Dallas hit 20 dingers, albeit with a middling batting average.

Kdub..

My sentiments exactly! Let's hope sabes doesn't get crazy with a Crede trade.

Might as well let Frandsen take it now...

Good signing. Dallas at least has a fairly high ceiling.

Dallas is a great reminder to all teams with young studs that are being banked on. This guy was rock solid. Angel fans weren't sweating a bit watching Glaus and his 40 HR's walk. We had Dallas.

Unfortunately, Dallas just bombed. Poor performance and terrible injuries killed the guy.

Anybody remember Dean Palmer? That's who this guy reminded me of when I first saw him hit with the Angels. A lefty Dean Palmer. Unfortunately, that means he's a .250/.325/.475 guy with 25 homers in a full season if he's healthy... but I think the fish - and the Giants - would take that and run.

here's what i dont get... the marlins sign him for 425K, and he scoffed at what the Angels offered?!?
either the Angels offered league min, or he WAY overestimated his market.

in any case, i hope he bounces back and we resign him next year

You guys are hilarious.

Every free agent signing is overpaid. Guys like Torii Hunter are horrible signings, but Dallas McPherson is a monster pick up.

Yea, start printing NL East Championship t-shirts. You're all morons.

McPherson was always going to be a AAAA player. He's useless, thats why no other team in the league even bothered for league min salary, in a day and age where a heartbeat gets you a $2 million contract.

Dallas was always going to be a AAAA player?

His career minor league line was:

301/385/578/963. He averaged a HR every 17 AB's.

2000 - Southern Conference All-Star
2001 - Southern Conference All-Star
2003 - Baseball America 1st Team All Star
2004 - AAA All Star / 1st Team Minor League All Star

He was a highly regarded prospect. He became injured and lost his stroke. To say he doesn't have talent (i.e. - "he's a AAAA" guy) is just flat out wrong. People are complimentary of this signing because McPhereson has upside and costs nothing. Odds of him panning out - very low. BUT, if he does pan out the Marlins will look geniuses. I'd much rather take a flier on a guy that has potential rather than a guy with no upside.

It was worth a shot for the Marlins. But I don't know about the genius part because it's only one year. He can walk if he has a great year. It's not like the Alexei Ramiriz signing. Kenny Williams will look like a genius if he pans out because he signed him for 4 years at about a million a year.

Please.....when I look at his stats, I see 250+ Ks and a .300 OBP.

For him to be worth playing, he'd have to hit at least 60 HRs. He's a horrible show at the plate.

Please don't post minor league awards to justify a major league roster slot for someone. In a world where Derek Jeter can win a gold glove and Justin Morneau can win an MVP, awards don't mean a thing.

Being on a blog during the offseason, you're supposed to know more about baseball than that.

Looks like San Fran is almost out of options other than overpaying for Crede. Good news for the White Sox.

TMACNTN, Oh you stupid little boy, you f#cked with the wrong bull. You see I was away living life when i came back to see you runnin your mouth on everything. The fact that you are responding to any and every post up here on the boards says it all. Go hit up your parents for them ten stacks, cuz I got a bet sayin that you've never been with a girl. Let alone a hot one! You are my favorite kind of internet dweller, the one who hides behind that keyboard in the vast electronic anonymous wasteland. I will hunt you down on every board just to see if you will back up YOUR BIG MOUTH. How you gonna pretend you have a girl, when you dont even have time for a job cuz youre up here trying to pick internet fights? Which no doubt, comes from a hard day of getting picked on in real life. That goattard thing you came up with was real cute too, sounds like you've definitely grown into your big boy pants. I'm gonna post this on all the latest boards, so everyone can watch and see you puss out on your bad ass challenge.. You post up to me again and I'll give you my e-mail. We'll start from there. God willing, you'll be from Chicago so I can come collect in person. Here's a little advice for the future: When you come here try and just enjoy the rumors, dont go callin people out with stupid ass bets, that you know we cant verify. The fact you cant prove it is not only your stregnth but also youre weakness. I know its a thinker. Ask someone to explain what that means. I'll come back and check in a day or two. F#ckin kids

Goathexxx????

How many of these did you post? Isn't there a better use of your time?

Please, take you petty squabbles somewhere else!

I don't know what's worst, Goat getting worked up over an internet argument and then taking time to write all that, or the fact that I actually wasted my time reading it.

I don't see the point in heavily juding somebody based off 360 MLB ABs (Ones bared with injuries mind you) when his minor league career was so prolific. It'd deffinatly be different if his minor league numbers were worse, but he's put up huge numbers on a professional level.

He looks to be at worst a ~.760 OPS guy. Considering the MLB average was .782 last year, that's not what you'd call horrible (And a hell of a lot better than the other current Marlin's options). But ontop of that he has a lot of power upside, expecially when you consider the fact that he should just now be entering his power prime. It's not farfetch for him to put up a plus 800 OPS, and that's being conservative.

And to the guy who said it's only a one year deal...Dallas has 1.164 service time ala Cots. That means the Marlins have control of him for 5 years.

And, unless there's a provision for him to jump out of his contract like Japanese deals, Alexie Ramirez is under White Soxs control for 6 years, not 4.

What's funny is that on a no-pressure team, he'll have an awesome year, get a big contract from someone next year, then get hurt again.

How can the same team make signings like this one and the Luis Gonzalez one?

What are they thinking with Gonzalez? Kevin Gregg, who turned out to be one of the more reliable closers in the NL, will likely be traded because he makes too much money - so they go and sign a useless Gonzalez who will block other young players to a bigger contract?

I always thought they were run well....now I'm starting to think otherwise...

bobo,

I kinda just figured they signed Luis Gonzalez to trade him midseason and pick up some prospects

Lets be honest. The marlins goal is get Dallas or whoever is hitting (castillo or Cantu) enough atbats that they can flip them after the all-star break. They are successfully using a minor league model to keep alive a subpar franchise and to rake money out of the luxury tax.

Good signing... low risk/high reward. Their signing of Gonzo and Dallas is to plug holes, nothing more. Gonzo is a cheap vet to teach the kids, Dallas is a low risk/high reward guy who can plug a hole at 3rd and potentially be a legit bat. Nothing more...

Holy crap is that a good contract even for a "AAAA" player. He has room to still improve and that is really getting a good deal out of Boras

Its called, actually having to follow thru on what you say. So eager to make a bad ass statement, but so quick to shy away from having to man up.

McPherson is judged a AAAA player based on 360 injury interrupted at bats but Pie is a stud in waiting despite 177 much worse ML ABs. The patience displayed in judging the latter is completely absent when judging the former.

Given McPherson's minor league numbers, I think now that he's being given an opportunity that he'll show decent power accompanied by lotsa Ks. Kinda like Pie.
