« Rockies Still Talking Long-Term With Hawpe | Main | Erik Bedard Rumors »
UPDATE, 1-31-08 at 12:26pm: Rosenthal confirms the signing. He believes it to be for $2MM guaranteed plus another $1MM in incentives. Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel doesn't understand the signing.
FROM 1-31-08 at 10:41am:
According to azfamily.com, outfielder Luis Gonzalez has signed with the Marlins. It was said on Sunday that Gonzalez balked at a $2MM offer from the team.
I'm not sure how this is going to work - the Marlins' outfield seemed set at Willingham, Maybin, and Hermida. Maybe Gonzalez can spell Willingham and Jacobs.

I wonder if it was the same contract they offered him earlier that he turned down.
Can't imagine there was much else out there for him.

I thought maybe the mariners if they don't get wilkerson or maybe and I know there was some bad blood when he left but the d-backs he could have backed up upton and gotten spot starts when byrnes had days off.

Good for Gonzo. Let him play his (probable) last year helping some kids and under minimal pressure.

Maybe this paves the way for Willingham moving to 1B and the awful Mike Jacobs getting benched

With all of the Marlins' uncertainty at third base, it seems as though this may have been a move to strengthen OF and 3B. I still recall that Joe Girardi lost the battle over whether or not Josh Willingham should or should not play 3B. He wanted Willingham at third; the organization wanted him in left.

Mabey... this is a prelude to Willingham returning to catcher.
Also, I thought he was a big part of the squabble for playing time with Kemp that caused all the friction with the Dodgers and got Little fired??? The mentor thing DIDN"T work there, why do they think it will work in Fla?
WHAT SAY YOU TIM???

Tim,
The Dodgers didn't offer Gonzalez arbitration, so they don't get a pick. Same situation with Jorge Julio and the Rox. The only remaining FA that will result in compensation are Type-B's: Piazza, Shannon Stewart, Trever Miller and Livan.

Good catch Mike, sorry all for the oversight.

Willingham's back will prevent him from playing third and expecially catcher. His limited to a corner OF spot or first base.

pretty good backup player for the young Marlins.

Hopefully this will allow Maybin to start the year in AAA. He could really use AT LEAST another 1/2 season in the minors.

Another reason why the Marlins will rise to the top.

Luis Gonzalez doesnt realize he's in the twilight of his career. I hope he doesnt cause turmoil and friction with the young Marlin players like he did with the past 2 teams he played on. Old Geezer.

Well, considering I saw Gonzo about 2 hours ago and mentioned his new contract. I can honestly say he seems really happy about his decision to join the Marlins for the year. I have a feeling he'll be a great help to a group of youngsters and will see more playing time then many expect him to.
