I am not planning to do away with the TypeKey commenting system, because it is tied to my blogging service TypePad. I love TypePad for many reasons and I'm sticking with it.
I know many of you have complained about TypeKey though. TypePad's CEO, Chris Alden, recently asked for suggestions to improve. I emailed him passing along the complaints about TypeKey, and also suggesting that users be able to use their TypeKey logins for message boards. He replied:
I also appreciate your suggestions on TypeKey. We will be making major changes and improvement to TypeKey this year and your thoughts are valuable. We also have been and are continuing to invest heavily in our spam fighting system. I also like the suggestion on message boards.

It seems like if I either write a long comment or write multiple comments in a short period of time, I have to sign in again.

Just had to be the first to post; I think the current system is fine.

That CEO guy should be fired..

"We also have been and are continuing to invest heavily in our spam fighting system."
ohhh geeze, if they start adding to the Anti-Spam filters we could see the verification fields and the refusal to post because "Type-Key thinks you are spam" pages go through the roof... That isnt their problem, their problem is the fact that you cant edit posts. Their problem is logging you out whether you click the little "keep me logged in for a week" box or not. Their problem is the anti-spam features here already. Their problem is the fact that some systems have difficulty with their site leading to double posts... But they are still more worried about posters spamming? Huh... :\

Im actually 100% with darkstar, I guess there is a first for everything. The spam filters make it difficult to post anything as it is, and they want to add more?? Editing posts would be real nice, something that nearly every other system has.

I have to say tim, im dissappointed. I would much rather u change that than redesign the site...and I doubt im alone
Posted by: Aduncaroo | January 31, 2008 at 03:46 PM
A positive I have noticed on other message systems (like rotoworld forums for example) is that you have the ability to click on a user name and it will list all their previous posts. This is extremely helpful when discerning whether someone is being a homer, or they are not fans of the team in question and are giving an unbiased analysis.

LOL @ corbin
So funny, yet so true.
Anyway, my only real issue with TypeKey is that it continuously signs you out when trying to make a post, regardless of whether you asked it to keep you logged in.
There is nothing worse then typing a long, eloquent, genius post only to hit "Post" and have the site tell you that you aren't signed in. If you aren't signed in, you're not supposed to even be able to type.

Just thinking about this for a little bit, I have to ask...
Is your blogging platform worth losing all of the features u would gain (editing, sorting,..just plain working) by swithing? What about the fact that im pretty sure at least half the users have trouble with it...

Double post... so ironic...
Posted by: JerseyMetFan | January 31, 2008 at 04:03 PM
Sometimes I post a comment and it will take forever and then say "error in posting comment". "please correct the error(s) in the form below." And then it has name, website, comment, etc., and I try it again and it never works. But sometimes it doesn't do that. It actually just happened to me when I was posting this.
Posted by: johansantana17 | January 31, 2008 at 04:03 PM
And it had email address on the form.

Blogging platform far outweighs the gains from a new commenting system, sorry aduncaroo.

Tim and Question for all,
another thing ~ I am actually having problems with the site on my blackberry the last 24 hours. Not sure if its my phone only (other sites load fine), so figured I would ask everyone if they are experiencing the same instead of emailing you with the problem. Reads “requesting script” for 2 mins then fails…
Blackberry problems anyone?
Jersey,
“There is nothing worse then typing a long, eloquent, genius post only to hit "Post" and have the site tell you that you aren't signed in. If you aren't signed in, you're not supposed to even be able to type.”
…yeah there is. Same exact situation you explain happens with this added to the end of it:
Then have to go back, log out because it still says its logged in, wait for the logout to complete only to have to log back in to get the chance of typing the post again…
I have actually become accustom to just typing everything in Word first then pasting it into Type-Key figuring it will put me through said problem… That’s a sad situation to be put in from a supposed message site!

Agreed with darkstar. I haven't been posting here very long, but the more I do, the more I realize how much Typekey really blows. As others have said, you can't edit posts which is pretty stupid. You are constantly being signed out even in the middle of posts and like you dark, I usually make a copy of the post I'm sending before I hit "post" just in case because I don't want to have to type it all again. That's pretty ridiculous. It seems most people have problems with this thing, yet Tim doesn't want to change it. Is typekey the only blogging platform or something?
Couple that with the fact that the site makes you constantly fiddle with cookie settings just to talk a page into loading and you have a pretty horrible experience set up. When sending a message, you could either be logged out, forget to empty your cookies and have the post not go through because the page doesn't load, gives some kind of error message or excuse for inaction or double posts. Posting is quite a hassle right now, so if Tim doesn't want to change from Typekey, obviously, a lot of things need to be done to it. If a majority of the users have this much to complain about, then obviously something has to be done.

FWIW, the commenting is working for me now. I was having the "no box" problem, but it seems to have been fixed.
Posted by: The Globalizer | January 31, 2008 at 05:20 PM
The page having trouble loading is a separate, recent issue and definitely of primary concern.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 31, 2008 at 05:30 PM
I know that TypeKey sucks for many.
But I have to be honest, I comment here a lot (using IE) and rarely experience problems. Most days I don't have to log in or do the spam filter. I know some people like to post massively long comments, and it doesn't like that. It does do a great job keeping out spam comments.
Personally I rarely type really long comments and never ever read them.
Ability to edit comments and stay logged in all the time, they definitely need.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 31, 2008 at 05:30 PM
All that said I will try to improve commenting if it doesn't get better. But I have to do the redesign first.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 31, 2008 at 06:01 PM
Thanks Tim for working on making this site better. Love the content - hate the commenting system. Here is my official list of wants based off other slick forums I participate in:
1. Stay logged in
2. Editing comments / deleting comments
3. Profiles (to view what a poster has written in the past)
Like others, I bet I get logged out once every 3 times I try to post something. The spam filter was a major headache a month ago but hasn't come up lately.
The really confusing thing is that better commenting systems have been around for years. I'm shocked that TypeKey is so obsolete.

Darkstar ... I have issues connecting to the site with my BB all the time.
Posted by: bjsguess | January 31, 2008 at 07:00 PM
What type of problems do you have on your BlackBerry BJ? I have never had problems before last night (and continuing this afternoon). It had never denied me before this though, just been extremely slow from time to time…
Also Tim, just checked and still experiencing the same problem on my phone. It reads "requesting script" on the statue bar for a few mins then eventually goes to the blackberry screen with a "A problem occurred while trying to render the page" popup.
Posted by: darkstar1661 | January 31, 2008 at 07:39 PM
I really wouldn't have any expectations of anything working well on a phone. I have done zero to make it mobile-friendly. It's a goal of mine but as I said I have to tackle things one at a time. I don't have a guy on salary I can throw at this stuff.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | January 31, 2008 at 07:51 PM
Tim, TypeKey sucks and it sucks bad. You've got battered housewife syndrome; you're in the denial stage. He's not really that bad, he really loves me, etc. No. You've got to make a clean break.
I don't know if anyone else has brought this up, but if you try and post on here at later times, you simply can't, you get re-directed to some form that has a bunch of lines you have to fill in, but even if you do, you still can't post.
That's ridiculous. Probably 1 out of every 5 posts I make never gets on here because of that.
It's really bush league, and maybe that was fine when you were running the site for fun, but not now.
Posted by: DentalPlan | January 31, 2008 at 08:24 PM
It just happened where it sent me to the registration page, I had to re-do it and it worked fine the second time. I think that people just need to grow up and learn how to type and then there wont be problems, if it takes you an hour to think of something to say and then you type slow on top of that, of course youre going to have problems. Many sites are like that.
Posted by: dbacks2007 | January 31, 2008 at 11:18 PM
I can picture all the juvies who are pouring over stats and stuff trying to figure out their point of view and then hitting the wrong button. hahaha. This sytem is not that bad, it takes a milisecond to process the post which is always nice. But yeah I guess I can come up with some issues. It would be nice if the page loaded to where your comment was instead of all the way at the top.
Posted by: dbacks2007 | January 31, 2008 at 11:21 PM
Regarding the blackberry issue, I hear there was a nationwide problem with blackberries and iphones today. I echo darkstar's sentiments with TypeKey's shortcomings though. That should be sufficient to take to Mr. CEO. It'd be nice to see the changes implemented before the season starts.
Posted by: NancyEcho1469 | January 31, 2008 at 11:25 PM
What about diaries? I think it would be awesome to have this site be slightly more interactive to read what other fans are saying and thinking beyond comments.
Posted by: IowaCubs | February 01, 2008 at 08:38 AM
ok, well just figured that I would let ya know that your site is again coming up on the blackberry... Sadly, it isnt coming up as well on the PC this morning ~ and every page loads with "done, but with errors on page" for some strange reason...
