« Odds and Ends: Choo, Inge, Lohse, Francona | Main | No Market For Reed Johnson »
12:28pm: Andrew Friedman denies it, calling the Bonds rumor a "non-story." They never even had a harmless internal conversation about Bonds, then?
11:27am: Japan is a legitimate possibility for Barry Bonds, but he may not have exhausted his MLB options just yet. Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times says the Rays have had internal discussions about signing Bonds (hat tip DRays Bay). At some point, one of the 30 teams is going to acknowledge that Bonds adds wins. Most fans have proven that they care more about wins than steroid use.
Other considerations for the Rays include Mike Piazza and Kenny Lofton. In the case of all three players, the Rays would have a logjam on their hands. But the chance to do some bargain shopping could prove irresistible.

Just go with Lofton, he will be cheaper, hes faster, he has lower injury risk, he plays more positions then Piazza and Bonds and the results for hitting for the exception of homeruns will be pretty much the same. Piazza and ESPECIALLY Bonds should retire already, if there not in the AL to DH, their useless

It wouldn't make sense for the Rays to sign Bonds. Not only because of the logjam, but they also shipped off Dukes and Young in part because they were a distraction to the team. I don't see them making moves to get rid of the distractions only to bring in the biggest one in history.
That said, somebody needs to sign Bonds to a bargain contract with some sort of protection written into that contract on the off chance he gets shipped off to the slammer. I just don't know which team is the best fit.

Actually, now that I think about it, I still think the Angels are the best fit for Bonds. He and Vlad can switch off at DH and the outfield, that way they'd almost always have BOTH Vlad and Bonds in their lineup. That would be dangerous. It would be a smart move for the Angels, I think, to take on Bonds for just one year.
Posted by: lrs77 | February 25, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Friggin Mariners should just sign Barry Bonds already.
They obviously are going for the win-now approach with the Bedard trade so I don't understand why they are content with such a weak line-up
Posted by: jza1218 | February 25, 2008 at 11:45 AM
The Angels have no room for Bonds with Garrett Anderson, Juan Rivera, Reggie Willits, Torii Hunter and Vlad Guerrero in their OF.
Posted by: jza1218 | February 25, 2008 at 11:46 AM
And Gary Matthews Jr

1. Iwamura 2B
2. Crawford LF
3. Pena 1B
4. Bonds DH
5. Upton CF
6. Longoria 3B
7. Baldelli/Gomes/Floyd RF
8. Navarro C
9. Bartlett SS

With that said Irs.. I'm not completely sure where Bonds belongs, but IMO I definitely think someone should sign him, even if it is for one year. He will walk literally twice a game, hit the long ball, and easily post an OPS over 1.0%. You mentioned the Angels, there is no room for him there. Whereever he ends up, it has to be an AL team because his fielding days (or playing days for that matter) are coming to an end.
Posted by: jtag | February 25, 2008 at 11:53 AM
Yeah, I don't get why the Mariners don't. I hear they're super image-conscious, but given the short-term window they have, Bonds would give them a huge boost. If not at DH, then LF, I can't imagine he's (much) worse than Ibanez at this point. They NEED him if they're thinking about contending.
Posted by: kswissreject | February 25, 2008 at 12:03 PM
I very rarely comment on anything on this page. In fact, this is the first time. But, come on people, get with the program. You can't use a guy who has a lifetime .444 OBP, is the all-time leader in home runs and would instantly pay for himself in season ticket sales for whoever signs him? That's ridiculous!!!!!! Forget the steroids because all fans will forget anyways, once their team is winning. This guy is a winner!!!!!! This would be the smartest move of all-time for the Devil Rays. I only wish the White Sox realized this. Come on, Kenny. If you're reading this, think about it. We would have Swisher, Thome and Bonds as the 3-4-5 hitters. This would tire pitchers out so much, they be taken out after 3 innings. LOL. I urge you Kenny to walk in at the last minute and take him. Then, we can finally win the World Series again :)

tampa would be perfect for bonds considering there is such low attendance there and they've had cancers before and basically his only drawback is a chemsitry one. he might even raise attendance.

I doubt that they're image-conscious considering they signed Jose Guillen last year and they have no problem keeping Mike Morse on their roster.

Tampa could sure use Bonds to offset the black hole in the lineup that is Bartlett...
I think Bonds would fit fine in Tampa or in Seattle. It seems like the fans and media wouldn't care as much in either place about having a steroid freak on their team. If either team wants to win, they should look to Bonds.
Posted by: thehoagster07 | February 25, 2008 at 12:15 PM
God I hope they sign him. He makes the team a playoff contender this season. Hes only considered a jerk by the media. Most players say he keeps to himself. He might not be friendly but that doesn't mean he ruins team chemistry. The Rays would be so much better with him hitting clean up its not even funny.
Posted by: celtics464 | February 25, 2008 at 12:18 PM
I agree with Seattle being the perfect fit. How is JOSE VIDRO keeping Bonds from being employed?
CF-Ichiro
SS-Bentancourt
DH-Bonds
3B-Beltre
LF-Ibanez
1B-Sexson
C-Johjima
RF-Wilkerson
2B-Lopez

The talks for Bonds with the D Rays are bogus
The Tampa Tribune reports that the Rays are saying that there is nothing to published reports that the team is interested in signing Barry Bonds. "It's a non-story," said executive vice-president Andrew Friedman through a team spokesman.
Posted by: MoeBigS | February 25, 2008 at 12:22 PM
Uh, white sox homer you do realize in your scenario Bonds would have to play the field? Seems unlikely to happen or work out.
Good call on the Mariners. They should really sign him. This image over playing ability is comical. Often the best moves are the ones most villified in the public. Once they start working out everyone forgets.
I am against the move for the Rays. Bonds would be taking away at bats from players that need them to keep Tampa on course to become a contender in the near future.
Posted by: walkoffblast | February 25, 2008 at 12:24 PM
I already commented under Bonds to Japan on why Bonds to the Rays makes no sense so I won't repeat myself, but I will comment on Bonds to other teams. Fist let me say that I hope Bonds doesn't get to come back, not because of steroids, more because he's simply a jerk. Having said that, I completely agree that teams like the Mariners and White Sox would probably be very smart to sign Bonds. Both those teams have overestimated how good they are this season and have spent the money and made moves that suggest they think they can win this year. Both of them could use a big bat liked Bonds in the middle of that lineup...especially the Mariners, who are the better team anyway.
The M's did a lot to improve their pitching, but their lineup...they had 1 guy with 100 RBIs last year (Ibanez) and Beltre led the team in HRs with 26. This team is screaming for a big bat in the middle and if Bonds takes ABs away from Brad Wilkerson (.786 OPS) in LF, Jose Vidro (.775) at DH and Richie Sexson (.694) at 1B (with Vidro shifting to first) that wouldn't be such a bad thing.
Posted by: BigScooter | February 25, 2008 at 12:25 PM
To he honest, I would rather see him go to Japan or retire. I am so sick of hearing the steroid talk, and thats all Bonds brings on himself and the game. I also think it would be best for baseball's world development if he went over to Japan for a year.
Seeing him in a Devil Rays unform would be wierd, but it does work. I think the M's would also benefit. So what do you do with Vidro?
Posted by: coolpapabell | February 25, 2008 at 12:31 PM
No matter where he goes, that man brings too much baggage with him. Just like Clemens now, with the whole steroid era, do you really think the fans will take him in as an actual player?
Posted by: MoeBigS | February 25, 2008 at 12:33 PM
The White Sox don't need Bonds (although the M's or Rays might be able to use him). By the way, this would be the worst outfield defense ever:
LF Bonds
CF Swisher
RF Dye
That is, an aging Dye, he was once excellent...
Posted by: jrfukudome | February 25, 2008 at 12:36 PM
Wow, if we had dye, bonds and swisher, maybe we could play both swisher and alexi ramirez in center, and orlando or uribe can play both ss and 2b at the same time?
haha slowest OF ever
Posted by: whitesoxfan424 | February 25, 2008 at 12:41 PM
You're actually worried about VIDRO?? But, to answer your question: Bonds, Ibanez, Sexson, Lopez? will all need rest at some point. Bonds and Ibanez for health reasons, Sexson and Lopez because of ineffectiveness. Step in Mr. Vidro.

Bonds belongs in Tampa
Posted by: celtics464 | February 25, 2008 at 01:02 PM
Tampa Bay would be a force with Bonds in their lineup. That would be amazing to see Carlos Pena hitting in front of him!!! Then if they could trade Baldelli for one more good pitcher (ie Blanton) midseason after he's proven that he's great again, they MIGHT actually have a chance to make the playoffs! Wouldn't that be something.
Posted by: bleed DODGER blue | February 25, 2008 at 01:07 PM
And Guitar Hero is right... he would DEFINITELY help attendance there, even if it's just for people to boo him. But, honestly if he keeps them in contention, they won't be booing him for long. And this coming from me - a die hard, Bonds-hating, Dodger fan. The man is still superhuman at the plate
Posted by: bleed DODGER blue | February 25, 2008 at 01:11 PM
Actually, I'm pretty sure 3,4,5 would be Upton, Bonds, Pena. However, TB already has DH locked up with Balldelli, Floyd, Gomes and as a team they're still at least one year away. I still Seattle as a PERFECT fit being in the win-NOW mode and Vidro as their DH.
Posted by: maximumpotential | February 25, 2008 at 01:12 PM
still *see* Seattle
Posted by: maximumpotential | February 25, 2008 at 01:14 PM
I know Bavasi is an idiot but Bonds out OPS'd Vidro by 270 last year. If you showed him pictures of adam everett and Adam Dunn then asked him which one he wanted to DH for his team he has to get it right. You can tell him he will lose the 20th pick and you still sign him.
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | February 25, 2008 at 01:36 PM
Yeah, yr right. Seattle is the team best suited to take Bonds. It would be mutually beneficial. Seattle is kind of like San Diego in that its media is not as crazy as some other cities, and the M's could use his bat in their win-now approach.
Posted by: lrs77 | February 25, 2008 at 03:24 PM
Bonds would be an AMAZING sign for Tampa, what better way to get people in the stands on a team that badly needs it.
Posted by: Dev0 | February 25, 2008 at 03:30 PM
How much does the prospect of losing draft picks impact the decision not to sign a Type A like Bonds? The guy put up a 1.045 OPS last year in 126 game in a league where he had to play the field. Where else can you find a 1.000+ OPS with a short-term commitment?
I actually think a team like Tampa Bay makes tremendous sense. You have a franchise on the brink of legitimacy in terms of winning, and no discernable fanbase to alienate by bringing in Bonds. In fact, Bonds would likely be another draw to put butts in the seats even when the Red Sox or Yankees aren't in town. Sure, there might be concerns that he would "poison" the youth movement, but at some point you have to ask if Bonds snubbing a 19- or 20-year-old up-and-comers will really stunt the kids' development.
The man can hit, and despite all the vitriol, he puts fans in the stands. In a market like Tampa, I'd make room at DH for him. If PED use is grounds for barring, then Andy Pettite should also be checking the Japanese baseball classifieds. And if being a nice guy were a requisite for being a baseball player, Ty Cobb and Ted Williams wouldn't have had jobs. In fact, I don't think Gary Sheffield would ever have made it out of Milwaukee.
Posted by: DunkinDonuts | February 25, 2008 at 03:30 PM
Why does everyone think Bonds costs the signing team a draft pick?
No arbitration offered = no draft picks lost for signing.
Posted by: walkoffblast | February 25, 2008 at 03:46 PM
If you are giving up draft picks then you better be sure that you are going to the playoffs OR that Bonds will be a net positive in your finances.
I'm also not sold on his ability to draw people.
To me, the only teams that should be looking at Bonds are those located in the AL, have a need at DH, and are reasonably close or expected to make the playoffs. That's a small crowd.
Bonds' best play may be to sit and see what injuries crop up. A hot Yankee team suffering through a Giambi injury might be willing to shell out big bucks to get Bonds in their lineup (ala Clemens).
Posted by: bjsguess | February 25, 2008 at 03:54 PM
Yanks won't need Bonds WHEN Giambi is on the DL, Matsui's the DH now as it is. Giambi & Ensberg are actually at 1st. The lineup was fine without Giambi last year, and will be beyond this year.
The Mariners make PERFECT sense ANY way you look at it.

Put Vido in for Bonds and that lineup looks auful. They're trying to win the division, Tampa isn't: they're just trying to be competitive, plus they just traded 2 headaches in Young and Dukes.
Posted by: maximumpotential | February 25, 2008 at 04:32 PM
only considering his numbers, i wouldn't mind having Bonds on the Angels. But, adding in his baggage and the fact that he's a clubhouse cancer, I wouldn't do it. These are the same Angels that suspended Jose Guillen from the playoffs for being a jerk and causing problems.
Plus, the Angels have waaaay too many old outfielders that need DH time.
But still, a lineup of
Figgins
Hunter
Bonds
Guerrero
Anderson
Kotchman
Kendrick
Napoli
Izturis
is pretty sweet.
theyd have to trade Matthews though, and he has a full NTC.
Posted by: bseballcrzy17 | February 25, 2008 at 06:03 PM
Bonds always made the guy who batted in front of him better (Rich Aurilia for instance). For Tampa, providing Pena w/protection would be excellent. In Seattle, he ought to bat behind Beltre. In Anaheim, behind Vlad. Any AL team's production would clearly benefit w/Bonds in the line up.
