« Pirates Talking Long-Term With Snell, LaRoche | Main | Odds and Ends: Thames, Sosa, Inge, Crisp »
According to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post, preliminary extension talks have begun with Mets starter John Maine. Maine (along with B.J. Upton and Hanley Ramirez) was gracious about his recent renewal. Maine is eligible for arbitration after this season.
As we've been saying, the going rate for a good young pitcher's three arb years is $13-14MM, not necessarily all guaranteed. A club option worth around $9MM for the 2012 season (Maine's first year of free agent eligibility) would be about standard.

Santana and Maine would be two great pitchrs to build a rotation around for the next 5-7 years.

Pitchers*
Posted by: Stephen Peele | March 05, 2008 at 09:56 AM
agreed. and i doubt there's enough money left in the tank, but could you imagine: santana/sabathia/maine (and, doubtfully, a healthy pedro). that's nasty stuff.

Can we get a write up on the Mets shopping Schoenweis? I'm thinking maybe St. Louis? Surely they will attempt address their need for a 1B after Delgado is done.

Or it may be to Cincinnati to get Hatteberg.

Also, Cincy does not need a lefty reliever.

Tim,
Have you heard anything about Sosa to DET for Thames?
Posted by: maximumpotential | March 05, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Nah, I don't hold out rumors on you guys...
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | March 05, 2008 at 10:42 AM
LOL, I know that. I'm pretty sure I heard it this morning on 1050 ESPN radio here in NY but not 100% certain (my wife wouldn't shut up lol)

i can't see anyone giving anything of real value for schoenweiss.
Posted by: greg | March 05, 2008 at 11:25 AM
The Mets pretty much unloaded the farm for Santana and will probably be happy for a Single A prospect, while dumping Scho's salary

C.C. hasn't been linked at all to the Mets, but I don't understand why. Oliver Perez is as good as gone after this season (since he'll be seeking around $15 million per), and Pedro Martinez is also a free agent (though he's a good bet to re-sign). Why not spend money on a sure-thing like C.C.? As stated above, a rotation of Santana, Sabathia, Maine, Pedro, and Pelfrey would be rock-star, and it's very doable.

spending money on maine now would be good, lock him up
and do you guys think mets got a chance to outbid yankees for CC sabathia, i mean yes they got lucky when red sox and yankees dropped out of the santana race
Sabathia is looking for a contract in the 100 mil range, do you think mets would want 2 pitchers with 100 mil contracts..?
Posted by: BxSquad | March 05, 2008 at 03:59 PM
I would hope Mark Tiexera is the #1 FA priority next Off-season over CC.

Why?
Posted by: nrmax88 | March 05, 2008 at 04:52 PM
There's no way Sabathia makes his way to Queens. Sabathia is going to command ~$20M+/year and I simply cannot believe that the Mets would tie up approximately $50M dollars on two pitchers. It's just not feasible.
Posted by: Stephen Peele | March 05, 2008 at 06:27 PM
The Sabathia to the Mets argument is a fascinating one. Even though a rotation of Santana-Sabathia-Maine-Martinez-Pelfrey would be really good, it would also be extremely expensive. Santana is making $20M, Sabathia will make $20M, Maine is gonna be making $4-5M, and Pedro should be somewhere around $10M. It just seems unlikely that any team would spend nearly $60M on five starters. But then again, its New York.
There is another way to think of the Sabathia thing though: If the Mets were to resign Perez, it'd likely cost them $15M a season. If they sign Sabathia, it'd likely cost them $19-20M a season. Honestly I think that a team with a payroll like the Mets', as well as the ensuing cash cow that will be Citi Field, should be willing to spend that extra $4-5M a year.
But Stephen Peele's argument that it is just not feasible for a team to spend $20M+ on two starters is reasonable. Because it is a fairly unfathomable concept.

Right now I still think the Mets will try to bring back Perez. Just because he will test the market doesnt mean he cant come back. I say this because when you look at the alternatives, where else do you look if Ollie leaves? Ben Sheets? Maybe, but he will cost as much with a big injury risk. Sabathia for 100 mil? Lowe, Burnett? Maybe, but Perez still seems like their best option right now. I guess they could sign Lohse and hope Pelfrey can step in up into the number 4 spot next year. A lot can still happen between now and November though.
Posted by: nrmax88 | March 05, 2008 at 07:06 PM
Because if Delgado doesn't come back there are no capable in-house options at 1B at this point and Tiexera is a monster both on D and with the Stick
Posted by: Superman | March 05, 2008 at 07:36 PM
plus the whole Durability this about CC breaking down because of his size and the innings hes pitched at his age has to turn you a way a bit more from a position player
Posted by: Superman | March 05, 2008 at 07:40 PM
*than from a position player and *durability thing
Posted by: Superman | March 05, 2008 at 07:55 PM
But Superman, can't you agree that getting a top of the rotation starter is a far bigger need than first base?
The Mets rotation after this year will consist of Santana, Maine, an aging Pedro, and an unproven Pelfrey. They don't have any pitching prospects to get anybody excited about.
Meanwhile though, even after Delgado leaves the lineup will still have Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Castillo, Alou, Church, etc.
Considering that there are FAR, FAR more good first baseman than there are top of the rotation starters, I think starting pitching will almost definately be the bigger need. The Mets should almost definatley persue Sabathia over Tex, because adding C.C. would give them the best rotation in the NL and a pretty good hitting team, which adds up to be arguably the favorites of the NL. Adding Tex instead of C.C. would give them a crappy rotation with 2 good pitchers (Johan and Maine), as well as a monster offense. Essentially they would be the 2008 Phillies: Hamels and Myers at the top of the rotation and everyone else sucks, but their lineup is scary as hell.
I'd rather have Sabathia.
Posted by: scribbletone | March 05, 2008 at 08:24 PM
Yah you make a good point but would you like him for 7 years id he starts to show signs of wear after say 4 years...when Tex is putting up 30hr 100rbi years with a good .280-.300 avg...Why don't the Mets just sign both a make us all happy. lol
Posted by: Superman | March 05, 2008 at 08:47 PM
Because I seriously doubt the Mets could swallow three $130M+ contracts within a year, especially considering that Wright and Reyes will have to be locked up as well in a couple years.
