Outspoken Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon signed a one-year deal for $775K for '08. That's significantly more than the Sox had to give him, so it seems they value his happiness. His new salary beats Mariano Rivera's two-year service time closer record of $750K.
Papelbon's salary will increase drastically a year from now, as he'll be arbitration-eligible for the first time. He probably won't get the $10MM Ryan Howard did, but something north of $5MM seems possible.

Well, at least we won't hear him whinning now. On the other hand, it's only going to increase two year service salaries in the future.

Crying about stuff pays off far too frequently in the world today. :(

Boston is well known for overpaying everyone. $160 mil 8 year deal for Manny, $14 mil a year for Drew, over $100 mil to get Dice-K, and there are most likely more but I don't wanna look it up. Bet the Lowell deal is going to look bad soon too.
Posted by: XD23 | March 06, 2008 at 04:27 PM
manny is worth more than 160 million over 8 years bro.
i'm happy they paid pabelbon big, as a yankees fan, he is gonna be great someday.

I am getting extremely tired of Paps being lumped in with today's cry baby atheletes. He is without argument one of the top 3 closers in baseball. If you were in the top 10% of employees at your McDonalds wouldnt you want to be paid as such? Ryan Howard and Papelbon both should get a free pass, as they have valid gripes.

You can complain about Papelbon bit you really can't complain about this from a Red Sox baseball operations perspective. The Red Sox organization is a cash cow, plain and simple. That whole region worships that team. In order to make one of your young stars happy, I think its worth giving up $100,000. When you make as much money as the Red Sox do, and therefore have that much money to spend, then overpaying in order to get the best players and keep them happy seems quite sensible.
I have no complaints with this. Everyone likes money.

Manny is not worth $20 mil over 8 years. Maybe in the current market with guys like Hunter getting $18 mil a year but not when he signed the deal.
He hit 40+ HR 120+ RBI in 3 of the 7 seasons and was never an MVP. Throw in the yearly headache he was when he wanted to get traded or not traded etc. Oh and the fact he is a crappy OF. Or he has missed 151 games during the 7 seasons.
And yes Papelbon should be included. He is a 0-3 player. Do you think no matter how good you are at your job that they will double your salary when they don't need to? No you will get a raise like everyone else. They are screwing themselves in the long run.
Posted by: XD23 | March 06, 2008 at 05:07 PM
Papelbon is still earning less than Sean Casey. What was the problem again?
No, the Red Sox didn't HAVE to pay him that much. They did in the hopes that it will encourage him to re-up with them later.
And it's not like Papelbon is the first good 0-3 player (or even the first closer) that's earned significantly more than he "had" to. The Yankees did it with Rivera.
And there are plenty of reasons for Papelbon to get more than Rivera did in 97-98: Papelbon's the same age as Rivera was then (27), but Pap's numbers are significantly better now than Rivera's were; salaries across the board are considerably higher than they were 10 years ago, so comparables are higher; Papelbon is already a hero in his city.
Doing this is just a tool that big-market teams can use. It's really not that much different than giving some free agent a bit more per year to sign him over another team: paying a bit more in exchange for (hopefully) building the future.

Hmmmm....McDonald's vs. the Big Leagues? Bad comparison. The collective bargaining agreement is in place that was negotiated by the union. A guy with three years service does not get paid on par with guys that signed contracts on the market or are in the 5th or 6th years of service. I'm getting sick of people insinuating they somehow should.
His salary is probably right. Under a $1,000,000 for your first three years unless you are a super 2 and then you get to rake in the cash.
Posted by: themetros | March 06, 2008 at 05:41 PM
only a yankees fan would say manny is worth 160 over 8 years. when you compare that contract to some of the yankees contracts it looks like a bargain. ill just make a quick off-the-top-of-my-head list of overpaid players on the yankees and red sox combined.
giambi pettitte mussina matsui abreu
rivera posada damon rodriguez jeter drew ramirez varitek lugo dicek
lowell ortiz.
did i miss anybody? back when the cardinals used to spend money they paid for two way players. offense and defense. if only baseball had a salary cap. then i could stop hearing about how epstein and cashman are geniuses. give me something north of 130 million and i could put a championship team together too.

The Red Sox did for Papelbon what the Orioles should have done for Markakis...pay a little more than you need to now and reap the dividends.
Posted by: dbacksbuzz | March 06, 2008 at 06:15 PM
I am glad the Orioles didn't give Markakis the money. He was asking for Ryan Howard money and he is not Ryan Howard. He'll get paid next year when he signs long term.
Paps got a huge raise, but it isn't the 900K he wanted. I bet he's still unhappy with the amount. I hope he sticks it to the team in his arbitration years. The more the Red Sox cripple themselves, the happier I become.

What you are not realizing in comparing Mo and Pap is that $775k in 2008 is worth significantly less than $750k was worth 10 years ago. Plus the MLB league minimum salaries were also significantly lower 10 years ago so in comparison he is really not getting more than Mo did.
Last point, Mo was coming off his freshman year as a closer when he signed that deal. (95 and 96 he was a setup man)

The Sox MAY have overpaid for dice-k (he still has 5 years left on his contract...it's foolish to judge it already), but Dice-K himself isn't getting overpaid. The man is making 52 million over 6. If he puts up numbers equivalent to a #3 for the length of that contract then he's probably getting paid just about right. #3 is definitely a very conservative estimate though.

That was in response to Joelcards and a couple other posters further up.
Posted by: gfulla | March 06, 2008 at 07:30 PM
David Ortiz is overpaid at 12.5 million? riiiiight.
Posted by: Zebraheaded | March 06, 2008 at 07:42 PM
Papelbon's deal doesn't beat Mo's salary when you factor in the inflation that has occurred in MLB since then.
Posted by: Rich | March 06, 2008 at 07:50 PM
This is just wrong, Sox should have told him to go ask Julio Lugo for a couple of millions from his salaray since he is in the pile of mediocre/useless garbage that benefit from 0-3 year players being cheap. The players hve to realize that the total amount od salaray being paid is not going to increase just because guys lke Paps have a big mouth, someone else has to take less.
Posted by: slashieboy | March 06, 2008 at 07:53 PM
So when will Jed Lowrie be taking Julio Lugo's place at SS? Probably not for a while because of Lugo's fat pocketbook weighing him down.
Posted by: JD | March 06, 2008 at 10:38 PM
I think Papelbon said enough to lump him in with Cole Hamels and Prince Fielder on this.

out of 17 players i have someone saying dicek and ortiz arent overpaid. well yes dicek isnt overpaid but thats not my point. the sox spent a ton of money for his rights and whether or not he got the money its the same thing, the sox just spend. maybe ortiz at 12.5 isnt terrible(he was the one i wasnt sure about listing) but he only hits, no defense. to his credit though he is a great hitter. you guys know there are only 25 guys per team. 50 total between yankees and red sox, 17 of which are getting paid handsomely. anyone now want to say basaball is a level playing field? doesnt really seem fair i dont think.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 07, 2008 at 03:34 AM
Whats fair about the prices people pay to get into Fenway yet it's sold out every game all year round year in and year out. Red Sox have the best fans in baseball period and we accept paying through the roof and as long as we do Sox will have a owner that fields a good team.
Posted by: slashieboy | March 07, 2008 at 04:50 AM
"Ryan Howard and Papelbon both should get a free pass, as they have valid gripes."
Nope, they dont.
Posted by: nrmax88 | March 07, 2008 at 06:49 AM
oh now the red sox have the best fans? i guess u have never been to st louis. boston fans are bandwagon jumpers. look at all those celtic and patriots fans. boston fans are good(hell you would have to be to put up with a century of futility) but the best fans? you should have been at the last cardinals home game last year. the team stunk all year and the fans were cheering and letting the players know how much they appreciated them. anyone can support a winner. only a true fan supports their team when times are tough.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 07, 2008 at 07:36 AM
You're right Joel nobody ever came to Fenway prior to 2004... OH WAIT
Boston sports are at a peak right now so of course there are going to be a ton of fans and while I do agree with there being a TON of bandwagoners there are also a TON of fans who were here before the sports hot streak in this city over the last 5 years. Sometimes I would prefer the Sox were terrible again so I didn't have to see all these Red Sox "fans" during away games.
Posted by: fitz | March 07, 2008 at 10:44 AM
once again red sox guy i didnt say the fans were bad, just not the best in baseball....period. i believe the cardinals fans are the best but without ever going to fenway or yankee stadium i wouldnt make that comment so neither should you. heck chicago fans are darn faithful but i have to say not very bright. they dont really understand the game like cards fans do. cards fans cheer when a guy sacrifices a runner to third. i guess for boston fans to cheer for that they would actually have to sacrifice. my problem with the yankees and red sox is simple. anyone can build a winner with a huge payroll. everyone says epsteins a genius but geez give me twice the money as half the competition and i build a winner too. maybe thats more of an issue with baseball itself and how there is no cap but still. everyone lately talks about cheating and getting an unfair advantage. well having twice the money to spend seems pretty unfair to me.
anyways i left two names off my overpaid sox yankees list. igawa and pavano. hard to remember since neither isnt going to pitch this year but geez i bet those guys have nice houses.
Posted by: Joelcards | March 07, 2008 at 05:14 PM
Joelcards, you couldn't build a WS winning team with all the money on earth. Sounds like jealousy to me. And your comment about "only a true fan supports their team when times are tough" applies to the Sox? They go 86 years without winning a WS, elevating losing to an art form, and the fan base has been fanatically supportive through it all. I don't know if they are the best fans in the world, but they are certainly better than just "good". Bandwagoneers exist everywhere, and I'm sure your beloved Cards picked up a few when they won the WS in 06. So stuff it with your holier-than-thou comments.
