« A Look At Nathan Haynes | Main | Mariners Keep Dickey »
The Tigers have been at the center of a number of recent trade rumors. There was the Huston Street rumor, and the Mike Wuertz rumor. But the one player that seemed the most likely to go, Brandon Inge, is still a member of the Tigers and now it appears that he will not be going anywhere in the near future.
Jim Leyland was asked yesterday if there would be any last-minute deals.
"My boss (general manager Dave Dombrowski) said it was OK to tell you that's the team."
In fact it now looks like Inge will be the everyday center fielder, at least for the time being, as Curtis Granderson will start the season on the DL. Inge's $6.2MM salary for 2008 suddenly doesn't seem like that much of a burden.

It is nice to know that the roster is set, but very disappointing that there is only one lefty coming out of the pen. I would have loved to seen Dombrowski trade for a another set up guy or lefty.

Why don't the Tigers see if they can get a guy like Steve Kline? The Giants don't need him, and because of salary, they could trade him purely as a salary dump.

I don't know Kline's numbers, but unless he has a decent split vs. lefties, there is no reason why we can't just use our righties as normal. I just wanted another lefty so that Bobby Seay doesn't get worn out.

Actually, I am really pleased with the way the roster turned out. Raburn can be the utility person, Santiago is the defensive replacement. Inge is the primary CF for now, but has to be the backup catcher. Clete Thomas is relatively new to me, but has impressed this spring. The bullpen doesn't seem too bad... Miner and Bazardo are fine long relievers/spot starters and Bautista can do fine as a set up.

Why would you complain about not getting a lefty specialist, and then when scribble suggests a lefty specialist you shoot it down and say you dont see a reason why you cant use your righties like normal.
This is like a step below rocket science.

If you think that the Tigers can win the World Series with Denny Bautista as their set up man, then you'll be disappointed. When David Ortiz comes up in the 8th inning, with the Sox down 1, with 2 on and 2 out, and Bautista leaves that 94 MPH fastball over the plate, you ought to remember this moment.
I'm not saying that Steve Kline is gonna make the difference. Now someone like Huston Street would make the difference. But if you have a lot of faith in Denny Bautista, and your contradicting your own statements, then you should probably go study up. Bazardo and Miner are solid as long relievers, but thats was never the issue. The back of your bullpen is gonna get pounded. You better that offense mashes every game, and Bonderman and Willis become legit 2-3 starters, because otherwise you may be screwed.

What I said was that I wouldn't take Kline from the Giants unless he has good numbers against lefties... and I would rather have a good right hander than a terrible left hander out on the mound. I know Bautista isn't the best pitcher in the world, but will be given the chance until Rodney comes back.
And I have studied up on the Tigers. I'm pretty sure I know what's going on.

I'm not really sure how long Rodney is out, but hes gotta get healthy, no doubt about that.
And why else would I bring up Steve Kline unless he's good against lefties? Most lefties are good against lefties. I'm surprised you haven't heard against him he's a fairly big name among LOOGY's. He struggled last year but his career numbers are pretty good. Everyone knows that reliever's numbers fluctuate. but he's probably one of the best of the cheap (in terms of talent), available options, and would be an upgrade on your staff. I wouldnt have brought him up otherwise..
