Tigers Want Huston Street?

According to Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger:

The Tigers, desperate for a pitcher at the back end of their bullpen, are trying to have serious discussions with Oakland about closer Huston Street. But so far, the A's have not even decided if they want to trade Street. And if they do, they're likely to ask more than the Tigers have to offer.

We talked about Street a couple days ago.  Jon Heyman believed the asking price would be huge; Susan Slusser suggested the A's might wait until midseason.  The Tigers aren't a great fit given their farm system.

Considering the A's are rebuilding and are looking for cheap players with upside and low service time, I don't see where there is a fit here. Am I missing something? The Tigers seemed to have traded their farm system away.

Maybe the Indians could nab him. Or, maybe the Tigers just want to prevent the Indians from nabbing him, hehe.

Actually Det still has allot to offer. They still have 4 top 50 AL Prospects. J. Larish 1B, Y. Bazardi SP, M. Hollimon 2B, V. Vasquez. Not to mention guys on there big league roster who have value and a decent price. M. Thames, F. Rodney. Say a Rodney, Vasquez and Hollimon should do the trick.

I hope he stays put this season. I want to see the Yanks sign Furcal & CC next year, and move Jeter to LF. Then MAYBE Damon (w/Yanks paying 60%) Marquez, Tabata for Street?

"I hope he stays put this season. I want to see the Yanks sign Furcal & CC next year, and move Jeter to LF. Then MAYBE Damon (w/Yanks paying 60%) Marquez, Tabata for Street?"

The Yanks will play Jeter at SS until he needs a walker and is a broken hip injury risk.

I can hope right? But if he has another year defensively like last year, I wouldn't be surprised to this happen. Of course, it'll be reported that it was Jeter's idea even though Cashman/Hank&Hal will probably force it upon him.

They can always trade Porcello ?! Im sure Beane wouldn't mind him.

Street to the Tigers. My fantasy teams ears just perked up. Too bad I think this is a long way away from happening anytime soon.

Top 50 prospects? Sorry, but I don't agree. Holliman was a 25 yr old AA player. Larish is a one tool player at AA and he was 24 already. They will be 26 and 25 year old minor leaguers this year, respectively. Vasquez is the 18th rated prospect according to BA...on the Tigers who, along with the White Sox and Astros, have one of the worst farms in the game. How does that make him in the top 50 overall?
Beane will wait until the trade deadline and get much better players than that.

Even if the A's decide its OK to trade Street, it will cost Porcello... and I don't see the Tigers trading "the next Josh Beckett"

Now that you mention Porcello im surprised the Fish never got him in the Miggy/D-Train deal.

A 25 year old former Cy Young award winner and one of the best young Hitters in the game.

Speedchaser: I'm not sure if they can afford to not trade Porcello for Street, if their bullpen is the ridiculous weakness it could be. There are two offensive pieces in their lineup that aren't "win-now"-types of players. They can't wait forever, especially with most of the rest of their farm system gone.

I agree with you where it would be silly to do, but at the same time, the clock's going to run out on Ordonez, Sheffield, I-Rod, Polanco, Renteria sometime, and probably all will be declining by the time Porcello is ready. If they're a good closer short from being "the team" in the American League, then they probably will need to meet Oakland's asking price.

Porcello cannot be traded until july or so. Teams must wait one calender year to trade a draft pick. I also feel as though ryan raburn's name is worth bringing up in a street trade. Wouldn't Raburn and Bazardo get the job done?

There are much cheaper options that Street. No need to trade away their very best prospect when you can get 80% of the player for half the cost.

Rayburn and Bazardo?? No offense, but there is no way that gets Street. The A's already have a surplus of OF types/prospects and while Rayburn is a nice player his service clock has already started and he will be 27 in less then a month. Bazardo looks to have a ceiling of a #4/5 type starter. I don't see Beane even thinking of dealing his prize closer for that package. Porcello and/or Worth could be included as PTBNL's. With that said, Street is a nice player, but the Tigers should try to do everything they can to hold onto Porcello. Their system is pretty bare, and he is one of the only guys with real upside left. I just don't see Beane dealing Street unless Porcello is involved. He's in no rush to deal Street at this point.

yes but he can be a PTBNL until then...

If Porcello is the required ingredient for this deal, it won't happen. I can't see the A's wanting any of the other Tiger prospects who are average at best. It'd be great if they did, though...lol. But, the chances of Porcello being traded are somewhere between 0 and 0.

This story came from the Newark Star-Ledger?

...what!?

Porcello is too much and everything else the Tigers have to trade is too little. I think the Tigers are going to have to look in another direction.

Anybody else think Jeff Weaver could be a good set-up man? DET gets along with Bor-ass...

Perhaps it would be a 3 team deal? Beane has done that in the past. But seriously, if he asked Joba+Hughes for Blanton, its gotta be the same deal for Street. There's no need to move him unless some team pulls a Swisher-type offer for Street.

Henry Rodriguez's rise up the system will play a huge part in Street's future in Oakland. Embree I guess could be a fill-in but honestly the Tigers have no one the A's want or need. Maybin or Miller for Street would have been perfect, bummer he's gone.

Does anybody think that it would make more sense for Oakland to extend Street before a trade, in order to maximize their return? I think it would be smart.

And who do the Tigers have to get this done?????????

Not that they have a need for him, although he would make a hell of a setup man, but the Yankees have so many pitching prospects, some of them are bound to not pan out. What about guys like McAllister, McCucthen, Marquez, Horne, etc. Oakland could still use high-upside, big-league ready arms.

I just have to comment on the Derek Jeter being moved comment -- If they didn't move him to accommodate a superior defensive player in Alex Rodriguez, why on earth would they move him for Furcal? Insanity! Huston's not going to Detroit.

Quo,

I like what you have to say. Obviously, the Tigers are not afraid to deal away the future, especially for this year. If they deal for a guy like Alan Embree, Tom Gordon, or more of a setup arm to patch up their pen early in the season and it works, they don't deal for Street. However, if those don't work, I can definitely see Porcello on his way out.

I'm an A's fan, so I have no problem will seeing Porcello on his way into our season! I just thought it might be unlikely!

5 years later makes a BIG difference in decision making

(Unrelated to this topic)

The Indians have claimed Craig Breslow off waivers from the Red Sox.

Anyone who thinks that the Tigers have an even decent farm system is definately wrong. Outside of Porcello they have no top prospects. They have some quality guys in Iorg, Bazardo, Sizemore, etc. but those guys pale in comparison to what most teams have outside of the White Sox and Astros.

A deal with the Tigers would likely include Brandon Inge as well as a great deal of money to pay for his contract, because Detroit wants to dump Inge and he can play third while Chavez is hurt or play somewhere else thanks to his versatility.

The A's would almost undoubtedly ask for Cale Iorg as well, because he is arguably their best position prospect now and plays shortstop, a position of which the A's have no designated "player of the future". Iorg could fill that hole as their shortstop of the future.

On top of that the A's would likely ask for multiple other prospects, likely essentially draining Detroits system to nil.

If the Tigers are pushing all their chips into 2008 and the couple years after, then I guess that Street is the guy to go after. He's young and with him and Zumaya they could have a potentailly dominant bullpen long term.

So to me that leaves two potential trade options for Beane and Dombrowski:

Brandon Inge (and $7-8M), Marcus Thames, Cale Iorg, Scott Sizemore and Yorman Bazardo for Huston Street and Alan Embree

OR

Brandon Inge (and $7-8M), Rick Porcello and Scott Sizemore for Huston Street and Alan Embree

scribbletone:
That makes sense, esp since OAK could use a R bat.

Guess I'm alone on this one (as usual lol)

I cannot take credit nor am I deflecting critizism for what I am about to propose ( tiger fan buddy of mine made it up) but it made me think twice so figured Iwould throw it out there. Marmol/Veal/Pignatello/Pie for granderson. Pies upside is...Granderson Marmol and pig instantly help the tigers pen and when zumaya gets back the pen just gets nasty. Detroit takes a hit offensively but they wouldn't miss his bat now they have migs. 5yrs of a cub OF of Sori/granderson/fukudome seems pretty sweet. Of course the major snag is I beleive Granderson has a no trade.
Rip away ( watch everyone will love this because its not mine lol )

Granderson won't be going anywhere. He is the face of the franchise. Also, Jeff Weaver will never wear a Tiger uniform as long as any of the people in charge are there. Apparently Jeff didn't endear himself to DD...lol.

"Marmol/Veal/Pignatello/Pie for granderson"

I'm a Cubs fan, but I think this trade is equally good for both teams.

The Cubs can an ideal leadoff guy to play center and just flat out rape the NL. It eliminates the potential issue in center and solidies the lineup as probably the best in the NL. The only issue is that with Wood's back spasms, it seems highly unlikely that they would deal Marmol because it would leave Howry as the only healthy, dependable back of the bullpen option. For this reason Hendry would likely persue a Pie/Wuertz/Veal/??? option instead, attempting to hold onto Marmol. I doubt the Tigers would bite on that.

This is a very strong deal for the Tigers. They get a stud reliever in Marmol, which when combined with Zumaya would give them a stunning 1-2 punch in the bullpen. Pie would replace Granderson and be a stud defensively, and without having any pressure to produce offensively in that lineup he would likely develop much better. Pignatello would give them another decent bullpen arm, and Veal gives them a potential high quality starter, and with their awful farm system they could use that.

Personally I feel like this deal might even be too good for Detroit, but thats mostly based on my doubts that Granderson is truly the player he was last year.

DET just extended Granderson. He's not going anywhere.

Maybe my mind is just burnt, but when did Weaver tick off DD?

I can't remember exactly. I know there were stories about him and Fick and some other guys on that team being unprofessional so to speak. I think a lot of it was just attitude based.

tim, i don't want to e-mail you again. but this is different. i made a site, and i just want people to check out my blog. it's kinda like this, so please check this out! haha, umm. i just made it today, i think it is pretty decent. so plzzzzz! come. http://thebaseballreview.blogspot.com/

sorry, double post. =D. i think the a's should trade street at the deadline if theyre not contending. espescially if they arent getting whta they want now

are you guys damn serious...?
always trying to make everything relate to the damn cubs.

granderson is like the derek jeter of the yankees, david wright of the mets, grady sizemore of the indians, why would the tigers trade him to the cubs..?

you guys say the first thing that come to your minds without even researching.

next thing it will be is derosa and marmol for chase utley or albert pujols, you guys need to stop.

Detroit has gotten away with such a mutt for a closer for so long I doubt they value the position enough to satisfy Oakland's obvious demands. I could see Embree in Detroit though. That makes far more sense.

Again, the A's are rebuilding. They aren't going to want Inge or Thames from Detroit's scrapheap. The only way this happens is with a 3 way trade or the A's pillaging the already thin tiger farm system. Don't forget Street is a top 10 closer who hasn't reached his prime and under salary control for 3 full years. The A's will need a good reason to part with him.

Do people think if Beane was to deal street that Porcello would be all he asked for ???

Would he want Cale Lorg too ?

Or is Porcello for Street straight up sound fair. If one were to presume detroit is up for trading Porcello in an effort to go all out to win this year ???

Would the A's even waste a roster spot on Inge ??? Even if most of his salary is paid for ? Hanahan is league average which is all they really need this year.

Even though its blatantly obvious the A's are rebuilding, they could still find decent use for Brandon Inge if its at 3 yrs/$9M. At $3M he would be a solid value, because he can provide high quality defense at third or adequately play any other position on the field outside of shortstop.

Although its obvious that the Tigers don't have the top quality young players that the A's would prefer, remember that Beane did more of a quantity over quality deal for Haren. He could still do that again here with Huston Street.

But a deal for Street would be the Tigers pushing all their chips into the next 2,3,4 years.

The Tigers have invested $7M in Rick Porcello. There is no way they're moving him. If the Tigers were really thay desperate for someone to pitch the 9th inning, they'd put Porcello in the closer role now instead of giving him up for a 1-inning reliever with arm issues. Yes, Street is good but his ceiling doesn't come close to Porcello's. It'd be moronic to give Porcello up for a fraction of his worth.

There is no value for Inge. That is why no one is trading for him. He's coming off an injury, and he is overpaid.

The A's didn't get quantity over quality!!!

Hey scribbletone, according to Baseball Prospectus, they have the second best farm system in all of baseball.

Why don't you do a little research before before you say something like that?

The positions that the A's need help in is SS, 3B, and a true CF.

I wouldn't call the Haren trade quantity over quality neccesarily. They weren't hyped up as much as some that they might have gotten back from Boston or NYY but the A's got back a very good OF prospect, a pitcher who looks to be a solid #2 type (what Haren actually is) along with a guy that people say could be a legit 40 HR threat. Plus 3 more players who all look like they could end up having solid big league careers. Quantity? Ya, 6 guys for Haren and a minor league reliever is a good haul, but they also happen to be pretty good.

TNS,

You can't possibly believe the Tigers would put Porcello in the closer's role now. I mean the kid didn't even pitch in the minors last year and he looked ok in 5 2/3 IP in spring training. He may have a ton of upside, but lets be semi realistic here. If Porcello is in the majors by the start of 2010 the Tigers should be ecstatic.

Also, just a little FYI, the Tigers haven't invested 7 million in Porcello yet. He signed a Major League contract that guarantees him that much, but it wasn't a bonus, its guaranteed salary. If he were traded to the A's, the A's would be responsible for it (and they already had the chance to draft him and give him that contract and decided against it).

I understand that the players that Beane got for Haren were very good players. Gonzalez and Anderson are both top prospects, and Carter, Cunningham and Smith are all also high quality prospects. But the fact is that the package doesnt include any elite prospects. Gonzalez is great, but he really isnt elite when you consider how many great outfield prospects there are. The same can be said for Brett Anderson.

What I was getting at is that he chose a package that offered the most potential major leaguers, over maybe a package that could've included Matt Kemp, Clay Kershaw, Phil Hughes or Jacoby Ellsbury. Not saying any of those guys were offered for him, but Beane chose to not hold out for guys like that.

I think the Haren trade was brilliant for the Athletics. Gonzalez is a potential middle of the order stud, Anderson may well end up being in the rotation by 2009 and at the top of it by 2010. Cunningham and Carter both can likely become regulars. Smith and Eveland both have futures in the majors as well. Beane did just about as good as he could do when dealing away a good #2 guy who was marketed as an ace, which he isnt.

And the reason that the Athletics are considered to have one of the best farm systems in baseball is because of their stunning depth. It has nothing to do with having the most elite prospects. The A's don't have any top 20 prospects in their organization, but they have more top prospects probably than any team in baseball outside of Tampa and Boston. Just look: Daric Barton, Carlos Gonzalez, Brett Anderson, Gio Gonzalez, Fautino De Los Santos, Chris Carter, Ryan Sweeney, Aaron Cunningham, Trevor Cahill. The reason that the A's have a top 3 farm system is because of the quantity of their top prospects, not the quality of them. If the rankings were based on quality, then the Reds would be number one by a massive margin, considering that they have four of the best prospects in baseball in Bruce, Cueto, Bailey and Votto.

And what about the Cubbies going after Huston Street?

Wood seems like he'll never be healthy and Marmol is rather inconsistent and belongs in the set up role.

The Cubs could offer a package surrounded around Felix Pie, since he could fill your hole in center long term and take over the position immediately. Throw in there Sean Marshall and another decent prospect and that seems like a pretty good deal.

An outfield of Buck/Pie/Gonzalez with Sweeney backing them up would be pretty much set for the next 5-10 years.
