« Retirement A Possibility For Sheffield | Main | Dan Johnson Clears Waivers »
So far during the 2008 regular season, 28 players have either been DFA'd or released. At the same point last year, that list only included 14 players. In the past four seasons, only 2006 (22) had more than 14 players DFA'd or released this early in the season.
This will be an interesting trend to watch the rest of this season and into the early portion of 2009. It appears to be an indication that teams are showing less patience to work trades for fringe players or teams may be placing higher premiums on prospects, unwilling to move even mid-level prospects for a guy that might be the 24th or 25th man on a 25-man roster. Either way, it could mean fewer trades in 2008 and beyond.
The list of players DFA'd so far this year includes some that have been productive Major Leaguers at some point in their career and could be again, including Kirk Saarloos, Juan Castro, Dan Johnson and Hideo Nomo. OK, maybe Nomo is a stretch. With players like this being made available it is even more reason for teams to avoid trades and wait. And of course Barry Bonds and Mike Piazza are still sitting out there. Let's take a look at what is being said about these players in the Blogosphere...

If you're talking about out-of-work DHs who could possibly still produce and are interested in a job, why's there no mention of Sammy Sosa?

Bonds will attempt to blame everyone (but himself) for no one signing him...he made his bed; time for him to lie in it...

Everybody else is at blame for Bonds not having a job. If they want to bite off their nose to spite their face, they are only hurting themselves, and not Bonds, who has literally nothing he has to prove to anybody on a baseball field anymore. Although he could be a big production boost for the Mets, Braves, heck there is no point in listing them all it would be like listing the places Albert Pujols or A-Rod would fit in this year. He is a top 10 hitter in the game, and he is without a job, because of steroids. Half the guys playing in the league RIGHT NOW cheated at some point. Its a joke.

Especially a team like the Mets, who idotically put al ltheir eggs in the 2008 basket with a mediocre team. And you wont sign Barry Bonds but you will let the joke Angel Pagan run out there every night in LF. And the funny thing, is that a lot of the Met fans will tell you that Bond wont fit in NY because he cant field, well, have you guys ever seen Angel Pagan field? He is dreadful, you cant imagine how horrible the routes he takes to the ball are. Bonds can outfield him anyday, even with no range. Like I have said time and time again, I dont xare if Bonds give's a how to best use PED's in baseball lesson on the big screen at Shea before every game. He can play LF for me anyday. Also, the whole 24-1 thing is a freakin joke. Team chemisty? In baseball. Its laughable. Its an individual sport, the batter goes up to hit, and his chemistry with the 23rd man on the roster isnt helping him at this point. The centerfielder is chasing a ball back to the wall and makes a stupendous basket catch facing away from home plate. Is it because he is so close with the backup 2nd baseman? Give me a break. The only time chemistry matters is between a pitcher and catcher, and very rarely between middle infielders.
I saw somebody post something like this here yesterday, but what is Bonds going to do walk into the Mets dugout and challenge Delgado to a fist fight and pee in Reyes' hat? No, more likely he will provide stability to the lineup, give Beltran and Wright tons more fastballs to hit, and if he can manage 1B, he can get Carlos (I have the most negative value of any player in MLB) Delgado out of the lineup, and post a 1000 OPS.
But yeah, he will distract the team and ruin the stupendous club house chemistry of the Mets. Its like that movie with the kid that ends up managing the Twins when the original manager wont sign Ricky Henderson as a free agent because he doesnt like him. This would be good for business, and would also provide an unmeasurable boost to the Mets offense.
