« Heyman's Latest: Lofton, Owings, Sabathia | Main | Royals Considerations For No. 3 Pick »
Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News notes that the Reds have designated shortstop Juan Castro for assignment. This should make room for Jerry Hairston Jr. while giving the Reds ten days to shop Castro.
Castro is a 35 year-old all-glove, no-hit type. The Reds owe him $975K this year plus a $100K buyout for '09. I imagine any interested party will wait the ten days so that the Reds pay the contract.

Castro really can't even be considered a glove at this point. He catches what he gets to but he lacks the range that he once had. Really the Reds should call up Paul Janish to replace him. Similar player but at least Janish has the advertised glove.
Haiston is another "Dusty" player. Like Patterson just a waste of a roster space as well.

So that makes him a no glove no hit player. Reminds me of me.

Jerry Hairston Jr. is currently destroying triple A.He's in the top 3 of almost every offensive catagory.

He's also Jerry Hairston Jr.

Also it's been rumored that Hairston had an out of his contract if he didn't make the majors by the end of April.

Hairston is just a stop gap. He's hot, and they need to get some offense. It's the same thing they did with Bailey, wait until they've exhausted every other possible option, and then bring up the kid, in this case Bruce.

If Dusty wants a guy on his roster he will get him, no matter if he can play or not and no matter the position the guy plays. Remember when DLee broke his wrist a few years ago, Dusty pushed to sign Tony Womack and brought him up as soon as he could even though the team already had 3 second basemen. Dusty's idea of replacing Lee was Tony Womack. Hairston is likely an upgrade over Castro at this point but as long as Dusty likes him he's guaranteed a job.

Shannon Russell, on John Fay's Insider blog reports the deal official, and is saying Hairston is the individual actually called up. http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/redsinsider/2008/04/todays-transactions.asp

Which teams do u think will take a shot at juan
Posted by: slumpbusters50 | April 21, 2008 at 05:10 PM
No team should. He's just not a major league caliber player any more. There are probably players in AAA for each major league team that could do just as well at a portion of the cost.
I think Hairston has a job even if he doesn't hit, till Gonzalez comes back, but things aren't looking great for him. Not showing any improvement with the leg fracture.
The Reds won't call up Bruce because he can't play SS, that isn't saying that Hairston can.

i would have to guess minnesota, kansas city, pittsburgh, washington and maybe st. louis wouldn't mind having a defensive specialist
Posted by: slumpbusters50 | April 21, 2008 at 05:51 PM
While it is true that defensive specialists can be very valuable, Castro hardly is that anymore. He can't hit and as he ages he's getting worse with the glove. There are bound to be players within those organizations that can at least provide the same thing that Castro does, without being 35 years old and adding to the roster.

i just read an article on mlb.com about how the pirates defense is struggling without the injured jack wilson so i think the pirates could be a really good fit for castro

why not give ceasar isturis a call or bobby hill, even though i liked bobby hill when he was with the cubs

I'm guessing the Twins wouldn't take him, he was there prior to being with the Reds, and there defensive specialist is now Nick Punto.
