According to MetsBlog, the Mets have acquired outfielder Trot Nixon from the D'Backs for a player to be named later or cash. The Mets, as you know, are currently weak on corner outfield depth.
Nixon, 34, was hitting .309/.437/.558 in 58 games at hitter-friendly Triple A Tucson. He should probably not go anywhere near a southpaw though.

This may sound weird for those who knew how he was with Boston, but in Cleveland Nixon was a guy who knew he wasn't the same player anymore and decided to be a good clubhouse guy and keep everybody loose. Turned out to be a pretty good role player...long as he didn't play the outfield of course.
I wonder if the Mets are thinking of this in order to help their clubhouse along with some pinch-hitting. They have to be wound pretty tight right now with the way their season is going.

Ah, I loved Trot. Awesome player, defined the meaning dirtdog. I remember being at the opening day on his first season as a full time player, he looked like a little kid.
Yeah, he's the kinda clubhouse guy the Mets would need.

Good pickup. He's a better OF option for a prolonged period of time than Tatis, Easley, Anderson, and Aguila (who can be good bench players but nothing more). He's also another guy who can talk to the media; joining Wright and Wagner as the only guys who do.

Exactly Ice. This is just to get somebody who can play some corner OF for a couple weeks until Church and Alou are back. It allows our bench players to get back into benchroles which they are more valuable at like you said. A presense to loosten the clubhouse can't hurt right now either. Hopefully he can produce like Shawn Green did last year which would be good enough for right now.

As an Indians fan I can say this ~ Great pickup for the clubhouse, miserable pickup if you plan on using him… Because the team has a gigantic clubhouse problem and the talent to win already, I don’t think they can go wrong really…
