Odds And Ends: Lo Duca, Cabrera, Nady, Bay

A few more minor notes from the MLBiverse...

  • Jay Gibbons joins the Long Island Ducks.
  • The Giants may have to trade for a long-reliever. Bruce Bochy admits that his team is without a long-reliever and will work to find extra innings from his middle relievers.
  • With Paul Lo Duca coming off the DL, the Nationals will now have three catchers. Chico Harlan feels the Nats will hope that Lo Duca plays well in his return to increase his trade value.
  • Nick Cafardo believes that the White Sox will let Orlando Cabrera walk at the end of the season as a free agent, feeling that their double-play combination of the future is in the system and not far away.
  • Bob Smizik doesn't see the Pirates landing any top prospects for Xavier Nady or Jason Bay, should they be dealt.

Cork Gaines writes for Rays Index and can be reached here.

Smizik didn't say necessarily that they won't land top prospects, but that those prospects aren't necessarily going to replace their value. Which is why prospects are so over valued... at the same time, I disagree that teams won't give top prospects, at least for Bay.

If the Braves are gonna be buyers I'd love to see Nady or Bay in ATL. Nady would probably be cheaper, but Bay would offer more production. Hmmmmm decisions, decisions...........

Nady isn't worth top prospects. Bay, at least with how he is playing now, should net something of value in return.

Not only do you have to consider the talent you get back but also the additional flexibility from a payroll perspective. While Bay is signed to a very nice contract the Pirates can still shave several million off their payroll.

Here is a question. Where does Cabrera go?

Giants can sign Tomko in a few days, when he is officially released from KC..or would be nice to trade them Brandon Duckworth..

"Here is a question. Where does Cabrera go?"

An Omar Vizquel-less Giants?

“An Omar Vizquel-less Giants?”

…A Furcal-less Dodgers?

…A Renteria-less Tigers?

He is going to church this sunday. The goddam racist. And after all that nice rabi did for him over the years. He will burn in hell.

Bay + 1 could go to the ChiSox for Josh Fields, Kyle McCulloch, and Jose Martinez. Then the Sox drop Thome or Konerko. They could be pretty darn strong heading into October:
C - Pierzynski
1B - Thome or Konerko (whoever they keep)
2B - Alexi Ramirez
3B - Joe Crede
SS - Orlando Cabrera
LF - Jason Bay
CF - Nick Swisher
RF - Carlos Quentin
DH - Jermaine Dye

Looks pretty strong to me. And the Pirates get an imediate replacement in LF in Fields. Then McCulloch could be ready mid 2009. And while Martinez is only 19 and is currently hitting just .228 this season he projects to be a middle of the order power threat. A possible clean-up hitter behind Alvarez.

Wow its been a long time since Ive been on this site.

I believe last time I was the White Sox and their fans were delusional, let by an idiotic management team with no hope of EVER competing for the playoffs this year.

I even see some of the usual suspects who had plenty to say still around.....lol.

Cabrera's gone after the year, pretty simple.
