« Indians Sign First Round Pick Chisenhall | Main | Burnett Wouldn't Mind Playing For Cubs »
MLB.com's Jim Molony tells us that Astros GM Ed Wade has been working the phones to get a feel for the "general lay of the land." After a busy offseason for Wade, most notably adding Miguel Tejada and Jose Valverde, Wade will likely be in the market for pitching upgrades.
The Astros rank 21st in baseball with a team ERA of 4.50, and their rotation is a combined 20-25 with a 4.77 ERA, and a league-worst 65 home runs allowed.
As Wade himself points out though, starting pitching won't be easy to come by this year. As usual, there are far more clubs looking to add starting pitching than sell it.
Personal speculation here, but with the Padres nearing a fire sale and Randy Wolf going through a particularly strong stretch, he could make sense for Houston and come at a reasonable price. Wolf is 5-4 this season with a 3.83 ERA through 84.2 innings, and has posted a very nice 75:26 K:BB ratio so far. Even more appealing for the home-run prone Astros, Wolf has allowed a sparkling 0.74 HR per nine innings. His numbers away from Petco, however, are far from impressive, having posted a 5.31 ERA through 40.2 innings. Surprisingly, more of his home runs (4) have been allowed at Petco than on the road. Any other possible thoughts?

why would the padres hold a fire sale now, when they are only 6 and a half out of 1st and in 3rd place?
doesn't seem to me that they would need to give up.

Given Uncle Drayton's tendencies, they're likely to make a minor move or two closer to the deadline and then land a Sabathia or Lowe in the offseason.
I don't really want to see an Astros fire sale but it's probably going to happen sooner rather than later.

I don't think Houston has much in the way of prospects to make a trade.

You can have the texas fireballer for all I care, i just wish you could take Dunn off our hands...

Yeah, poor reds fans having to deal with Adam Dunn. A gaurunteed 900 OPS and 40 homeruns every year. It must really be horrible.

The Astros are 8.5 games and 5 teams out of the wild card. Why would they be buyers?

I think they sign Freddy Garcia when is ready.

And its the astros...we are dumb. Freaking trade Oswalt, Lee right now for prospects! If we can see the Formula for sucess then we should be shot.
Dbacks, Phillies, Marlins, Tampa. Building the farm! Then once you have plenty of talent buy one ore two big contracts.

I'm going to have to say it, but I'm with Richard Justice: don't sell now or in the off-season. They're not that far off from being a contender.

I believe Lee has a no trade clause.

…Yeah, but they are falling off that contender pace while not having anything to trade for reinforcements ~ all the prospects were sent to build this club. It’s a thin line of “do we take the chance we don’t experience regression/injury and somehow manage to get back in this”
