Jon Heyman of SI.com posted a new column yesterday.
- Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd is quietly calling other teams about Matt Holliday scenarios. One that was "floated," perhaps by Colorado, involved Holliday, Willy Taveras, Fernando Martinez, and Carlos Beltran. The Mets don't want to trade Beltran, nor does the player want to waive his no-trade clause. The Holliday-Mets scenario is deemed a long shot. Meanwhile, Troy E. Renck says the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets are "all panting after" Holliday.
- As you know, Brian Fuentes is likely to be traded.
- Heyman talked to a GM who expects Mark Teixeira to stay put. That does seem likely; the Braves are 6.5 games out.
i think that would be awsome if the yankees made a deal with th rockies that would be like this:
Rockies Get:
Ian Kennedy
Jose tabata
2 other prospets to be named
Yankees Get:
Brian Fuentes
Matt Holliday
Posted by: yankeesuniverse | July 16, 2008 at 09:32 AM
The other 2 preospects would have to be top ones to make this deal. Tabata is having a terrible season and Kennedy is as overrated as they come.
Id think Austin Jackson woudl likely need to replace Tabata to start with.
Posted by: curse_ended | July 16, 2008 at 09:41 AM
Kennedy and Tabata have both plummeted in value. A lot of front offices now no longer see Kennedy as anything better than a decent back of the rotation guy, without any more upside. Meanwhile Tabata may be young for his level but he's still seriously underperforming and has shown flashes of some attitude issues.
Neither Kennedy nor Tabata is the top prospect they once were, and a deal including Holliday would almost assuredly start with either Austin Jackson or Phil Hughes. And I wouldn't be shocked if the Rockies looked into Jesus Montero. His power potential in cozy Coors Field could be scary.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 16, 2008 at 09:52 AM
Tabata isnt actually having as bad a season as his numbers would indicate. he was playing a lot better as of recently, but has been out for a little while with a hamstring injury.
i think the Yankees would probably part with either Hughes or Austin Jackson, but not both in a package for the above.
for me, id rather see Hughes, Tabata and two prospects rather than Austin Jackson, IPK, and two prospects.
and im not sure i make the deal at that price knowing Holliday will likely opt for FA after the 2009 season.

What about a 3 way trade with the Cubs with Beltran moving to Chicago?
Beltran to Cubs
Vitters, Pie, Wuertz to Rockies
Holliday and Reed Johnson to Mets
Just an idea.
Posted by: uww1 | July 16, 2008 at 09:53 AM
I doubt that Vitters, Pie and Wuertz would be enough for Colorado. Maybe something like Vitters, Pie, Ceda?
Posted by: scribbletone | July 16, 2008 at 10:01 AM
I like scribble tones idea. And the other thing I would do is take out Reed Johnson. He is unesscessary for that trade to work. But if the trade were to go down that would likely make Atkins available and the Rockies would use a stopgap until Vitters.
Posted by: rebuilding | July 16, 2008 at 10:08 AM
There is no way, if I am the Mets, I trade Beltan. Especially not for Holliday who will be a FA soon and will cost more than Beltran. Beltran is the best CF in the NL. You don't trade those if you are a large market team.

Would Mets fans trade Pelfrey and F Martinez for Holliday?
Posted by: wayne gomes | July 16, 2008 at 10:36 AM
"Would Mets fans trade Pelfrey and F Martinez for Holliday?"
Not likely after the way Pelfrey has been looking lately.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 16, 2008 at 10:50 AM
Wow. Are you guys are crazy. It would take at least two upper tier prospects, one MLB ready player, and most likely one more. You can't trade left overs for a slugger.
Posted by: Redbirdfan | July 16, 2008 at 10:58 AM
How about Michael Bowden and Brandon Moss to the Rockies for Holliday? Just a thought. Expand the deal if you want and add Craig Hansen and another prospect for Fuentes.
Posted by: cmac1973 | July 16, 2008 at 11:18 AM
As a Mets fan, one guy that would interest me is Clint Barmes. Tulowitski will be back this week and with the rest of the Rox getting healthy he will likely be moved to the bench. I like Easley, but I would be a bit nervous counting on him for a stretch run. Forget Castillo, Barmes has decent pop, hits for average and is fairly young. The price tag also shouldn't be to steep.

"How about Michael Bowden and Brandon Moss to the Rockies for Holliday? Just a thought. Expand the deal if you want and add Craig Hansen and another prospect for Fuentes."
I don't think the Red Sox will seriously be in on any Holliday deal since Ortiz looks like he'll be back (July 25th) and Holliday is hitting 60 points lower on the road then he is at home this year (and his career home/away numbers show he's very much a Coors field product).
I don't think they would deal for him even as a replacement for Manny. I'll be shocked if the Red Sox pass on Manny's 09 option.
Posted by: Peagle8 | July 16, 2008 at 11:53 AM
for all the trade proposals mentioned i would say phil hughes to the yanks plus 2 or 3 other big leaguers sounds the best for the rockies. kennedy is average as scribble stated. i dont see the mets trading pelfrey at all or fmart for a rental. i do however thin the mets need him more. i think the rockies want pitching the have francis, cook, jiminez, and i dont know who. a potential 1 or 2 starter would be big for them and thats what hughes is.
Posted by: Joelcards | July 16, 2008 at 11:56 AM
I don't understand why the Indians aren't interested in Fuentes. It would solve their closer problems, and give them a better answer in their already beleaguered bullpen.
Posted by: Pronkfan789 | July 16, 2008 at 12:00 PM
You would think the Tex deal from last year would serve as a comparable precedent, but the more I look at each player the more I feel that Tex is a better player.
Road numbers for Tex are significantly better the past three seasons, and he gives you a Gold Glove 1B, as opposed to a barely adequate (Burrellesque, you could say) LF from Holliday
Posted by: wayne gomes | July 16, 2008 at 12:49 PM
I honestly dont think the Mets stand a chance of getting him. They simply cannot move Pelfrey considering the state of pitching in their organization. Outside of Niese, who else is coming? Ollie will probably leave after this year and Martinez and Hernandez are pretty much done. Pelfrey simply needs to be 100% off limits after they moved Guerra, Mulvey and Humber.
As for Martinez he should be available but if they move him they really can't include Pelfrey or Niese in the same deal, it'd kill their farm system. But the odds of them making a deal that doesnt include F-Mart and one of those pitchers is highly unlikely. Colorado simply will want/get more. I mean they can try Martinez/Heilman/2 Prospects, but the fact of the matter is that unless the deal includes Pelfrey or Beltran its gonna be difficult for the Mets.
And if the Red Sox were to go after him (I'd be surprised unless Ortiz is in worse condition than we thought) it'd cost WAY more than Bowden and Moss. At this point, while Moss is valuable, he's not really the type of high-ceiling prospect that you have to get in return for Holliday. I'm sure the Rockies would want Bowden and then one of Kalish, Anderson, Lowrie, or Masterson, assuming that Lester, Ellsbury and Buchholz are off limits. And thats why the Sox won't get him. Unless they're willing to move at least two of their very best young players (not on the ML roster), the Rockies won't have any of it.
I would like to see the Angels make a run. Offer say, Brandon Wood, Hank Conger, Nick Green and Gary Matthews Jr. for Holliday. The Rockies would have to take on Matthews' contract, but Wood and Conger have stud potential.
Honestly I expect Holliday to stay put.

it would be great if the yankees got hollliday and fuentes seriously this could be the trade
Kei igawa
latrow hawkins
and 2 or 3 more prosepcts
for
Matt holiday
brian fuentes
tht be perfect everyone is saying to trade kennedy b/c he hasnt had alot of sucess yet in the majors big deal the kids only 23 he will be great in a year orr 2 so keep him hes still young and think about it once pettite and moose r gone the rotation
wang
chamberlin
hughes
kennedy it would be dominate in the future
Posted by: yankeefanbriccio13 | July 16, 2008 at 01:03 PM
yeah scribble the mets rotation next year would have some serious holes without the cheap pelfrey. they will have santana,, maine, pelfrey as it is. maybe heilman would get a shot next year? im sure they plan on spending money on pitching in the offseason one way or another but without pelfrey woudl be worse.
the angels(much like my cardinals) r one of those teams that could have a real shot with a big addition. how about adenhardt and wood is that too much? i think the rockies want a good young starter(who doeesnt).
Posted by: Joelcards | July 16, 2008 at 01:10 PM
"it would be great if the yankees got hollliday and fuentes seriously this could could be the trade

true it would be great if the yanks were to get holliday and fuentes but for kei igawa and latroy hawkins? i dont think the rox will take crappy spare parts in exchange for their best hitter and best reliever. the only way it would work is if the 2 prospects the yanks were to include were hughes, kennedy, or austin jacskon.
on another note there is no way the mets can trade fmart, pelfrey, niese, or beltran. fmart and niese are the only good young prospects they have and pelfrey has finally come along. and beltran is one of the best outfielders in the NL. the mets should hold on to their young guys and look at guys like casey blake or kenny lofton and other guys that can contribute on the cheap
Posted by: nymets86 | July 16, 2008 at 01:28 PM
Yeah honestly I'm not sure how Kenny Lofton hasn't put on a Mets uniform yet. I mean come on. He's free.
"Kei igawa
latrow hawkins
and 2 or 3 more prosepcts
for
Matt holiday
brian fuentes"
Oh my god. No. NOOOOOOOO. If I were a Rockies fan and I saw that trade I would smack my face with a shovel. Kei Igawa and LaTroy Hawkins ARE WORTH NOTHING. They might very well even have negative value. And you want to land the best hitter and arguably the best reliever available for that? Fuentes alone is going to cost someone a very, very good prospect. Holliday's price should be astounding.
It'd be more like Holliday and Fuentes for Hughes, Tabata, Horne and Montero
Posted by: scribbletone | July 16, 2008 at 01:42 PM
I THink THe Mets SHould Make This Trade
Mets Get: X. Nady
Pirates Get: Niese and 2 other Prospects But Not F. Martinez
OR
Mets Get: M. Holliday
Rockies Get: Niese, Heilman and 2 other Prospects
Posted by: MetFanFoLife | July 16, 2008 at 02:25 PM
alright someone tell me their thoughts on this trade offer
Rockies get: hansen, pauley, bowden, and either chris carter or crisp
Red Sox get: Holliday and fuentes
then we let ramirez walk after the season, sign holliday for about 10 mill a year, then with te extra money leftover sign a shortstop like orlando cabrera or trade with the mets for jose reyes.
yes no? get back to me
Posted by: gmac | July 16, 2008 at 04:27 PM
There is no way Holliday signs for 10 mill a year
Posted by: willie randolph sucks | July 16, 2008 at 05:16 PM
The mets wouldn't include reyes for santana there is no way they trade him.
Posted by: willie randolph sucks | July 16, 2008 at 05:17 PM
Is this thread the April Fool's Day of trade proposals or something? Igawa and Hawkins for Matt Holliday and Brian Fuentes? Getting Reyes away from the Mets? Come on.
I'm all for being open minded, but those proposals are completely asinine.
Posted by: ReardenTech | July 16, 2008 at 05:23 PM
ok so i re thought wat i said b4 and made a revised trade
yankees get: HOlliday fuentes
rockies get: Bobby abreu
kei igawa
Jose veras
i think thts a good trade
what do u think? yes or no
let me know hwat u think
Posted by: yankeefanbriccio13 | July 16, 2008 at 06:25 PM
Yankeefanbricco,
Forgive me if there's an inside joke I'm not privy to or something...but Kei Igawa has zero trade value. I can't see anyone taking him off their hands unless it's a swap of bad contracts, "change of scenery" situation.
As one of the main pieces in a deal for a team's best outfielder and lefty reliever, he is pretty much worthless. Abreu is a useful player, but has a huge option and is not nearly on Holliday's level. Plus, Holliday is signed reasonably for next year.
Posted by: ReardenTech | July 16, 2008 at 06:31 PM
i want to add one more player in i woul dsay this
yankees get: holliday, fuentes
Rockies get: Bobby abreu
Kei igawa, jose veras, gardner or christaian, and a player to be named from the minors
now hwat do u think thts my final trade thing what do u think? good or bad
Posted by: yankeefanbriccio13 | July 16, 2008 at 08:05 PM
That's a good start, but I'm thinking it should be a three-way:
Yankees get: Holliday, Fuentes, Buchholz, Lester, Youkilis, Lowrie
Rockies get: Bobby Abreu (as a prorated $16M rental in a season in which they're not contending), Kei Igawa, Johnny Damon
Red Sox get: Omar Quintanilla (to move over to SS to take over for Lugo)
Let me know what you guys think...
Posted by: DunkinDonuts | July 16, 2008 at 08:29 PM
Joelcards,
I think Lester is currently just as untouchable as Buchholz, if not more so. I assume Bowden, Masterson and Bard are fair game, and despite suggestions to the contrary, I think the Red Sox would be happy to move Moss or Carter for the right if a trading partner would take decent quantity over blue-chip quality.
Posted by: DunkinDonuts | July 16, 2008 at 08:34 PM
dunkindonuts,
honestly i llove tht trade deal nut i dont think its gonna happen and if it were to happen the red sox would have to get more then just then one player if there giving up youkillis and lester( who pitched a no hitter) and then they wouldnt have a firtbaseman so in order for tht trade to happen the rockies or yankees would have to throw in a firstbaseman
Posted by: yankeefanbriccio13 | July 16, 2008 at 08:58 PM
yankeefanbriccio13,
DunkinDonuts was making fun of your proposal and was just kidding... ihope! i think its great and all that you want the yankees to get the best players to make their team better but you've got to realize that none of your trade proposals will ever happen. you have to be more realistic. hey but things like this have happened... i mean scott kazmir was traded for victor zambrano.
Posted by: nymets86 | July 16, 2008 at 09:28 PM
No, I was dead serious. I want a new shortstop.
Posted by: DunkinDonuts | July 16, 2008 at 09:42 PM
hahahaha
Posted by: nymets86 | July 16, 2008 at 09:47 PM
ok fine heres a trade
yankees get : holliday and fuentes
rockies get: Damon, gardner, chritian, jose veras, and latrow hawkins
if u call tht unrealistic then ur craxy
Posted by: yankeefanbriccio13 | July 16, 2008 at 10:41 PM
Seems like I'm the only Rockies fan that visits this site...
Yankeefanbriccio13, that's still kind of unrealistic, but only because the Rockies are in desperate need of pitching, and especially pitching that is not named LaTroy Hawkins. We tried the LaTroy thing last year, and it worked out occasionally, and we don't really want him back. You'd probably get us to bite on Veras.
But we DEFINITELY don't need all the outfielders. We already have a glut of outfielders: Holliday, Taveras, Hawpe, Spilborghs, Sullivan, Podsednik...and that's just on our major league roster. We also have a future stud of a center fielder coming up in Dexter Fowler.
tl;dr - the Rockies don't need outfielders, we can recover from losing Holliday. We need pitching; starting and relief.
Posted by: oo_nrb | July 17, 2008 at 01:37 AM
The Rockies would not want any of the bloated contracts of old Yankees veterans back in a deal (Damon, Abreu). Igawa and Hawkins would probably clear waivers right now, so I don't think they have any value
Rockies would ask for Cano and a Horne or Ohlendorf for Holliday, maybe more
Posted by: wayne gomes | July 17, 2008 at 08:17 AM
i guess i'm crazy then
Posted by: nymets86 | July 17, 2008 at 12:08 PM
Yankeesfabio,
Are you serious? Is this whole thing a joke? Do you look at what you type? From the content you provide to the actual physical typing, its all absurd.I just don't even know what else to say to you sir.
Posted by: Dragline | July 17, 2008 at 01:10 PM
dragline,
dont call me sir im only 12 years old
to every one else im only 12 so dont make fun of me for making trade proposals tht u guys think r crazy
Posted by: yankeefanbriccio13 | July 17, 2008 at 01:29 PM
ok heres a trade deal
yankees get: fuentes, holliday
rockies get: Veras, edwar ramierez, jose tabata, austin kackson
hows tht?
Posted by: yankeefanbriccio13 | July 17, 2008 at 01:34 PM
rockies have already said they dont want alot of young players and that they want some1 established for holliday. so why not give them crisp and 3 prospects for holliday? i dont see how that is a bad trade.
and reyes DOESNT WANT TO BE A MET so why not make a deal for him. or go after micheal young. i hate lugo and if i was the g.m. of the sox i wouldnt even be worrying about replacing manny just YET. i would be putting deals together for michael young right now. he is proven. and if the sox never went and got coco and traded marte to the marlins instead of hanley (he was a higher prospect than ramirez) we wouldnt have to worry about this one bit. at this time we need a SHROTSTOP not another OUTFIELDER. deal with that after the season
Posted by: gmac | July 17, 2008 at 02:04 PM
dunkin donuts do you see what you just proposed? the YANKEES trading with the RED SOX? is that a joke? why would the red sox or the yankees ever feel the need to help eachother out?
Posted by: gmac | July 17, 2008 at 02:08 PM
Oh my word, I didn't see that. How about if the Red Sox throw in Masterson as a temporary truce so the deal can get done?
Posted by: DunkinDonuts | July 17, 2008 at 02:58 PM
Yankeefanbriccio13:
Always good to see a young fan around :) . The rest of the people here seem to forget that they were young and inexperienced once. As you get older, you'll be able to see how trades can affect both teams, rather than just yours.
As I said earlier, you might get the Rox to bite on Veras, and possibly Ramirez, though he's a bit too high-risk right now. The Rockies are looking for immediate contributors, especially because our entire pitching staff, save for Cook and Buchholz, is in shambles.
So...put this together for me. The Rockies give the Yankees Holliday and Fuentes, and in return, we need an immediate contributor in the bullpen, an immediate contributor in the infield, and a high-level prospect. And by immediate contributor, we're talking the likes of Joba or comparable. We don't want to trade All-Stars for scraps.
Posted by: oo_nrb | July 17, 2008 at 03:36 PM
exactly like the sox trading youk to help the yankees get two allstars for a no body. doesnt help the sox or the rockies but it helps the yankees
Posted by: gmac | July 17, 2008 at 03:43 PM
no wait there are three allstars and two players who are gonna star in this league in a few years for a nobody to the sox and a couple washed up yanks to the rockies
Posted by: gmac | July 17, 2008 at 03:46 PM
How about this.
Giambi
Kennedy
4
Holiday
Fuentes
Sorry stache fans, but it's time for the Yanks to move on from Jason
