« Pettitte To Pitch In '09? | Main | Orioles Interested In Eckstein »
5:55pm: Robert MacLeod talked to Jays President Paul Godfrey, who said J.P. Ricciardi is not shopping Burnett but has received calls.
2:23pm: According to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun, the Blue Jays are shopping starter A.J. Burnett for a shortstop. Elliott notes that the Phillies and Orioles have had scouts at recent Burnett starts. Neither of those organizations figures to match up on the shortstop front though.
Any contenders with an MLB-ready shortstop to spare? The Cubs have Ronny Cedeno, who may or may not have a future as a regular. The Brewers have J.J. Hardy and Alcides Escobar in the organization. The Braves have Brent Lillibridge, and the Dodgers have Chin-lung Hu. The Dodgers might need to hang on to Hu, however.

How about Julio Lugo? Heck, I say the Sox should throw in Timlin and Varitek for good measure! :)

Lugo! Lugo! Lugo!
Posted by: el clash combo | July 03, 2008 at 02:28 PM
Ronny Cedeno would be starting on the Cubs if not for the over-acheiving, .312 hitting Ryan "The Riot" Theriot (who is fabulous by the way.) I don't know if I want AJ, but I like that he wants to be in Chicago! And he's better than Maddux, Wolf, etc. Maybe if can't get Harden.

It's going to cost a heck of a lot more than Ronny Cedeno to land Burnett.
Posted by: 92-93 | July 03, 2008 at 02:36 PM
The Phils aren't an ideal fit, but Jason Donald, the SS at Double-A Reading, is probably about MLB-ready at this point (hitting .299/.390/.494 this year).
Might Donald, another hitting prospect, and a lower tier pitching prospect get a deal done?
Posted by: PhillyFriar | July 03, 2008 at 02:36 PM
Jason Bay and Jack Wilson combo for Burnett and prospects. Bay heads to Canada, Blue Jays get their SS, and the Pirates fill their need for a power righty and minor league depth. Ya...makes too much sense to actually happen.
Posted by: Polka | July 03, 2008 at 02:45 PM
I doubt we're going to get a big name SS. Doubt the Phillies are gonna give up Rollins for Burnett, don't think Baltimore has any good SS. Anyone see Edgar Renteria going to the Jays for Burnett and some others? The Tigers are probably gonna make a run for the playoffs and they need to solidify their rotation. This is probably crazy but do you see Micheal Young going back to Toronto for Burnett? I don't think Texas is a team thats gonna make a run but their rotation is pretty bad.
(from my post on sportsnet.ca about Burnett being traded for an SS)

The pirates will only trade for a righty pitcher that is looking to retire. I like the bay to canada and jack as their shortstop. Bring in the cubs as a 3rd team and you may have yourself a deal. We know pittsburgh is ok trading within the division. Aramis Ramirez? Great move for pitt.

Red Sox are not the worst fit, always had interest in Burnett, and have Jed Lowrie
Posted by: quintjs | July 03, 2008 at 02:48 PM
This is what I don't understand about any of the contenders being all about C.C. Sabathia. The guy is not going to re-sign for most clubs, and would you honestly give up like what a certain club gave up for B. Colon....What are the Indians going to ask for Gamel, LaPorta, Escobar, Parra, Gallardo, I mean this team is deep and really only needs a good number 2-3 starter. Would be ridiculous for the Brewers to give up that much ML ready talent. As for the Rays and Phillies, why would you go for a stud LHP starter. Do you think the Mets are salvitaing over C.C. if they could get them, NO and neither should the other two franchises. You don't need two stud LHP, especially for whom they would want.

I like the idea of the Red Sox trading Lugo, but do the Sox really need Burnett?
How about the Rays. They seem to have some real depth at shortstop with Bartlett, Ben Zobrist and then Reid Brignac in the minors. There pitching has been great but they could certainly use a veteran...
Posted by: Greenieee | July 03, 2008 at 02:55 PM
As a Braves fan, it's been really disappointing to see Lillibridge's year. The trade value he built on his minor league numbers (and a small dose of hype, IMO) is pretty tarnished now. I forget where I read the stat, but he was one of the 10 worst hitters in AAA this year (based on OPS, I think).
Posted by: maddux530 | July 03, 2008 at 02:57 PM
I also like the trade with the rays if they don't lose too much. I would see Zobrist, Jennings, and maybe a b or less pitching prospect.
Posted by: theJonathan | July 03, 2008 at 03:10 PM
I don't understand what people are talking about...
Burnett is simply one of the best option you can find at the end of July...
His ERA is not as good as C.C but, his stock is growning lately.
I never understand why somename comes up like Zobrist and Lugo, etc..
They are not even a regular player if considering their ability..
Burnett is worth more than what his stats right now...

No way the Rangers trade Mike Young, at least not now. When Elvis Andrus is ready to go (probably 2010), then it might get interesting. But trading Young for the oft-injured Burnett in a year when Texas has no shot in catching LAA would be pretty stupid, even by the "trade Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young for Adam Eaton and Aki Otsuka" standard.
Posted by: J the Dizzolla | July 03, 2008 at 04:29 PM
The Pirates deal with Bay and Wilson sounds the best to me.
There's no way the Blue Jays should take Lugo (career 88 OPS+ for about $9M/year, in case anyone was wondering) unless the Red Sox eat a lot of salary and throw in one or two top prospects. Lowrie sounds like a much better starting point.
I'd love Burnett to the Yankees, but I don't think we have much to offer in the way of young shortstops. That, of course, assumes they want a young shortstop. That's right...I call it here: Jeter for Burnett....GO! ...

How about the Angels trading Brandon Wood or Aybar plus a pitching prospect for AJ Burnett. They have plenty of money in case AJ exercises his option for next season.
I thought of Detroit, but I don't think the Jays would want the pricey Reneteria. Guillen might intrigue the Jays since they need a character guy in their clubhouse.

"I like the idea of the Red Sox trading Lugo, but do the Sox really need Burnett?"
They can have him for free.
Please?

Would Miguel Tejada be enough or are they looking to go younger? Lord knows the Astros need starting pitching.
Posted by: trevordchi | July 03, 2008 at 06:31 PM
Jays would want someone younger/cheaper/under control of the team for longer then Tejada. And really Tejada isn't a shortstop anymore.
Posted by: Dev0 | July 03, 2008 at 07:03 PM
I wouldn't be shocked if the Blue Jays settled at looking at Ronny Cedeno at short.
The Cubs could offer Cedeno, Donnie Veal and a low level prospect for Burnett. The Jays would get Cedeno to try out at short, Veal is a good prospect and another young guy on top of that would be solid. The Jays could probably do better, but then again if they're intent on moving Burnett its not a godawful deal.
Posted by: scribbletone | July 03, 2008 at 07:23 PM
If I wanted to save my job, I'd deal with the Braves or the Dodgers...if not, I'd deal with the Phillies or the Cubs...I'd be surprised if they dealt Burnett in the division
Posted by: Beau | July 03, 2008 at 07:29 PM
Okay, Julio Lugo and Mike Timlin for free.
Timlin was on the 92&93 W.S. champion Blue jays, Cito Gaston can have him back.
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | July 03, 2008 at 07:40 PM
That's probably a great idea, Arodsucksatlife, considering how Ricciardi's power over the team has dropped with Gaston around. But I doubt that someone as sensible as Gaston would trade within the division.
Burnett seems like the revenge type of guy.

I don't see what is so bad about trading within your division. Also Cyberzero, Gaston isn't the GM, he's the manager. As for the Jays' search for a SS I already posted my thoughts. BTW guys read up on the Eckstein to Orioles rumor, made me laugh when I saw it.
Posted by: Jays Believer 92,93 | July 03, 2008 at 08:18 PM
Gaston's not GM, but he has a whole lot more power over Godfrey than Retardi has anymore.
Posted by: cyberzero_jays | July 03, 2008 at 08:24 PM
You speak like Godfrey is a puppet. What is this "power" over Godfrey all about. If Gaston has this power over Godfrey then why isn't he the President?
Posted by: Jays Believer 92,93 | July 03, 2008 at 08:29 PM
The two of you make Jays fans look stupid. Please stop.
scribbletone, Cedeno & Veal for Burnett is a terrible joke. JP would easily rather the picks.
Posted by: 92-93 | July 03, 2008 at 08:33 PM
He can't be offered arbitration if he opts out of his contract, can he? If that's the case, then what picks? Or maybe I'm wrong...that just doesn't seem right though.
I do agree that Scribbletone's suggestion is a joke though.
Posted by: gfulla | July 03, 2008 at 10:33 PM
I would love to get Jed Lowrie for Burnett, Or even Andrus. Both those guys would be a solid return for Burnett. Sure Texas or Boston could throw someone else in there two but honestly if the Jays can trade Burnett for a real A prospect i hope they jump at the chance.
Posted by: BaseBallz | July 03, 2008 at 11:39 PM
lets go nuts - Pie/murton/cedeno to SD
Greene to Toronto
AJ to cubs and maybe a b prospect from SD.
Only if AJ waives the optout and cubs get him for 3 yrs.
Posted by: touchmymonkey | July 04, 2008 at 06:10 AM
Not only can you offer him arbitration if he opts out, but its a guaranteed decline of arbitration because he is opting out.

hey if any jays fans or other fans tht just know i was wondering if burnett had any character issues or personality problems?
Posted by: philliesphan44 | July 04, 2008 at 08:52 PM
He's got a very big attitude problem which is probably what stops him from being an ace. You can tell by his expressions, he's a whiny brat. And I say this liking the guy. Recent example, he got booed at RogersCenter after a poor outing, and tipped his hat to the crowd. When he is on, I will say he's a top 5 pitcher in baseball.
Posted by: juiced | July 05, 2008 at 12:00 AM
His attitude his horrendous, and his personality is downright puzzling. He doesn't get along with the fans or the media, and he has had issues with players in the past, most noticably with Overbay on the field this year.
That being said, he's going to leave a massive hole in the Jays rotation when he leaves. All of a sudden Marcum is the 2 and McGowan the 3 and you go Eeeeek.
Posted by: 92-93 | July 05, 2008 at 01:27 AM
Ok people saying o trade burnett for lugo . its not gunna happen . its not gona be a 1 for 1 . if burnett gets traded hes gunna be traded for prospects you idiots . were probably looking at a david purcey david eckstein and aj burnett deal to the brewers for jj hardy and a B+ prospect
