| Gammons On The Cubs' Starter Pursuit »
By Tim Dierkes [July 1, 2008 at 10:35am CST]
We've entered trade deadline month, with Indians ace C.C. Sabathia front row and center. Let's discuss.
- Ken Davidoff has a nice summary of the situation, agreeing with Buster Olney's suggestion that the Brewers have the best mix of means and motivation to acquire Sabathia. Olney's handicap yesterday ranked the Rays, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Cubs behind the Brewers (in that order).
- Brewers GM Doug Melvin calls the speculation "just the same old rumors." Still, Melvin would consider moving prospects for a rental and notes that his stacked Double A club has been popular with other clubs.
- Yankees GM Brian Cashman does not sound like someone who plans to go all-in to get Sabathia. Gammons says they've "lurked."
- On the topic of the Cubs, ESPN's Peter Gammons writes, "They doubt they have enough to get Sabathia, although Hendry constantly touches base with Indians GM Mark Shapiro." Regardless, Gammons expects the Indians to move quickly on Sabathia.
- Gammons says the Rangers are out but the Phillies "shouldn't be overlooked." The Rays? They've lurked.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Latest C.C. Sabathia Rumors:
If we are to trade are cy young pitcher away...and hopefully the brewers keep close in the race. Maybe just maybe we can pry both prized AA prospects away from them. Laporta and Gamel would be a huge improvement at 3B and corner outfield, although they are both fielding risks, I believe their bats will speak louder than their defensive abilities. But, if we were to get these two guys...neither one seems like a lead off hitter, assuming Wedge would like to try Sizemore in the 3 hole since we are out of it.
LF/RF- Francisco
CF-Sizemore
LF/RF- Laporta
1B- Garko, Aubrey
2B- Cabrera "unfortunately"
SS- Perralta or Cabrera
3B- Gamel
C- V-Mart
DH- Hafner :\
SP- Carmona, Lee, Laffey, Miller, and a free agent???
We have so many glaring holes right now it is tough to improve them all in one season....look for another bullpen arm and closer, and a MOR starter. And NOT Jason Marquis.

They doubt they have enough to get Sabathia
this must kill cub fans knowing that their scrub prospects cant get sabathia. everyone on here besides cub fans knew it all along but they insisted rich hill and pie and a slew of other scrubs could get it done

All this talk about Milwaukee being able to pull in Sabathia... how? Would they really involve both LaPorta AND Gamel in a deal for a guy who will leave at the end of the year? Who else do they have to offer? I keep hearing "prospects" but haven't heard any names.

why dont you just go look at their double a team in huntsville

also this was posted in the espn fantasy section written by peter gammons
The Brewers make the most sense if they can figure out a way to take some of the Ben Sheets money and give it to [C.C.] Sabathia. Two of the best evaluators I know say Milwaukee's Huntsville club is the best prospect team in the minors. Another says Huntsville has five legitimate starting major leaguers, and another club rates Huntsville 'the best prospect team our scout's ever seen.' Doug Melvin may not trade shortstop Alcides Escobar, but when you're talking about a bat like Matt LaPorta and a pure hitter like Matt Gamel [both over 1.000 in OPS], there's lots to discuss."
Posted by: redsfan | July 01, 2008 at 11:02 AM
I've heard of most - if not all - of the other prospects' names people are throwing around for other teams in the Sabathia hunt... but not these guys. Only LaPorta, Parra and Gamel. Maybe it's just my lack of knowledge of the Brewer farm hands?
Posted by: Mace27 | July 01, 2008 at 11:05 AM
you probably just havent heard of them because they take a back seat to gamel and laporta and thats who most of the people know
Posted by: redsfan | July 01, 2008 at 11:10 AM
I'd love to see a Brewers/Indians deal. The only problem with LaPorta and Gamel is that many scouts see them as eventual 1B/DH types because of their defensive liablities and 1B/DH is not the highest priority need for the Indians. Still, I'd take one of them in the deal. Sounds like the media and the Cubs F.O. have a more realistic assessment of Cubs prospects than Cubs fans. Why would the Tribe want Felix Pie when they already have him in the form of Franklin Gutierrez? It will be interesting because I think if the Brewers can add a bullpen arm from the Indians in a C.C. deal they might very well blow by the Cubs down the stretch.
Posted by: MickS | July 01, 2008 at 11:15 AM
There is no way the Indians get Gamel AND LaPorta for just a few months of CC. I can totally see them getting one of the two, and maybe a near-MLB ready pitcher.
Posted by: cubsfan52 | July 01, 2008 at 11:19 AM
If we can get Laporta and Gamel, I would have no problem giving up a bullpen arm "which the brewers need." I would probably discuss a Raffy B. in the talks. He is aging, and I do not htink he will ever have an impressive season like he did in 2007.
Gamel can learn 3B, look at A-Rod's first season or two there...He is young and talented with no ceiling over his potential. Also, Wes Hodges is a year away...if we could bring him up, put Gamel at first and Laporta improves in the outfield...that is a good young offense to add to the core of Sizemore.

Indian fans need to realize that their team sucks!!
Posted by: DerSchlächter | July 01, 2008 at 11:31 AM
Nah, I dont even think Cleveland would want both Gamel and LaPorta ~ LaPorta and a Pitcher (and maybe change) would be better longterm and just fine of a package...
C’mon Mil, get’er dun!
Posted by: darkstar1661 | July 01, 2008 at 11:38 AM
I hope this happens simply because it makes the playoff race that much more interesting. I could see ONE of LaPorta/Gamel, Cole Gillespie, and Jeremy Jeffress (I'm sure the Brewers will demand at least one pitcher in return) in exchange for Sabathia. That way, the Indians get their prospects, while the Brewers get CC without giving up too much they can't replace.
Obviously, without a DH, one of their two big Double A bats are expendable and Gillespie, another nice hitter, also projects as a corner outfielder. Jeffress stings a bit, but Sabathia will almost certainly make them forget the troubled, but talented young fireballer in short time. While it's a bit of a war of attrition, since they'll be losing Sheets in the offseason, so long as they can sign Sabathia long-term, his relative youth and proven durability (over Sheets) would likely prove a net gain. Return Gallardo, keep Parra, and fill out the back with the leftovers- whoever is healthy among McClung, Suppan, Capuano, Bush, and Villanueva- and you've got a very solid five; one that would, presumably (I haven't looked at all of the contracts), enjoy the added benefit of depth.
When you then consider the potential Murderer's Row they've got- Fielder, Braun, Hardy, Hart, Weeks (if he ever figures it out), the Matt (or Mat) left over...the NL Central should be the Crew's for the next several years.
Cubs fans beware (and I want to point out...I'm NOT a Brewers fan)

Darkstar, wouldn't you agree that we need a 3B more than a corner outfielder?
Posted by: Adam | July 01, 2008 at 11:42 AM
But you do have a point, I would like a young prospect pitcher "RIGHT HANDED" to go along with the rotation...his ceiling has to be higher than Sowers' though! HAH

I think Der-sucks-alot needs to stay "on topic".
Posted by: MickS | July 01, 2008 at 11:51 AM
The Cubs do have enough. It said that the Cubs don't want to give up Sean Gallagher. If they gave up Gallagher, Vitters, Ceda, and Patterson they could get the deal done unless the Brewers make a crazy offer of Gamel and Laporta. But if you take Gallagher out of the Cubs trade offer, they don't have enough. I think the Cubs should crunch and give up Gallagher. If they don't get CC, I could see them offering a package of Vitters, Pie/Colvin, and Gallagher to the Ms for Bedard.

“Darkstar, wouldn't you agree that we need a 3B more than a corner outfielder?”
…Yes and no. Yes, we need a 3B more than a corner guy, but neither of these players (LaPorta or Gamel) are really longterm 3B options and we need a middle-of-the-order guy more than anything else.
The only rumored longterm 3B option which fits that I have heard in CC talks is LaRoche, another player I would love for them to somehow manage to get their hands on. But Mil with LaPorta for LF/1B or LA with LaRoche for 3B ~ I’m happy with either… Team will most likely target that Middle-of-the-order type, a SP prospect and a lower-minors prospect of any position really…
Joe ~ no; no it wouldnt…

Milehigh,
J.J. Hardy as part of a "Murderers' Row"? Step back from the edge, my friend...

I think the Reds should be considered a dark horse contender. Here is why.
1) They could offer Adam Dunn and Homer Bailey for Sabathia. Yes, Dunn is eligible for Free Agency but, his Wife has said she doesn't want to move too far away from her parents who live in Dayton. Cleveland allows her to stay close to her parents and allows Dunn the ability to DH every once in awhile to stay fresher, longer.
2) Homer Bailey has been considered THE SAVIOUR of the Reds Pitching staff ever since he was Drafted. Now that he hasn't performed so well and fans are beginning to think he is a bust, it would be a GOOD time to trade him. A change of scenery (and lower expectations) might do him good just like it has done for Edinson Volquez.
3) Dunn would give Cleveland a corner Outfielder with power and Bailey would give them another young Pitcher.
4) With Dunn's salary off the books and (hopefully) King Griffey Junior's also off after this year, the Reds would have over $22 million free next year to be able to pay for Sabathia, an Innings eater and Left Handed Starter they NEED if they EVER have hopes of being a contender.
5) With improved Starting Pitching and Jay Bruce and Joey Votto in the middle of the Reds line-up, the Reds WONT MISS Adam Dunn and KGJ and what little extra Offense they provide (after deducting their BELOW average Defense which allows more Runs to score compared to what an average Defensive Outfielder would provide).
Posted by: ctownboy | July 01, 2008 at 12:29 PM
One major problem, Baileys velocity is down and his stuff adn attitude are becoming a problem. Replace Bailey with Cueto and you might be on to something though
Posted by: laxtonto | July 01, 2008 at 12:38 PM
ctownboy, Homer Bailey has zero trade value right now and as you mentioned Dunn is in his walk year so why would a team that is going nowhere this year want a guy who is going someplace else next year. So that trade proposal is basically C.C. for, well, uh, nothing.
Posted by: MickS | July 01, 2008 at 01:03 PM
wow
1. The reds suck. PERIOD. The last time I checked, they were in last place, behind, none other than, THE PIRATES. Give it up.
2. All of you ignorant cleveland fans know nothing about baseball. There is no way in hell that your oversized ace is worth two of the best prospects ever to come up the brewers organization. So what if the brewers make it to the playoffs this year. Then what. You guys think that just because CC has won a cy young, and has a big name that you can get whatever you want for him.
“If we are to trade are cy young pitcher away...and hopefully the brewers keep close in the race. Maybe just maybe we can pry both prized AA prospects away from them. Laporta and Gamel would be a huge improvement at 3B and corner outfield, although they are both fielding risks, I believe their bats will speak louder than their defensive abilities. But, if we were to get these two guys...neither one seems like a lead off hitter, assuming Wedge would like to try Sizemore in the 3 hole since we are out of it."
-you are obviouly desperate. Cleveland sucks.

Yes, I have read about his attitude and his velocity.
Can't do much about his attitude but his velocity, I think, is a different thing altogether.
I think by trying to get him to improve his other Pitches, the Reds have messed his mechanics up and that has caused his Fast Ball to lose some speed and become VERY hittable. It also doesn't help that he plays in a hitter's park (Great American Small Park).
Look at his starts last year in San Francisco and Oakland, two large ball parks. He did very well. Those were parks where he could get away with an average Change Up or breaking Pitch and throw Fast Balls and just dare the batters to hit them. Why? Because there wasn't the liklihood of a routine Fly Ball going out for a Home Run.
Now, look at his starts in GASP and his one start in Philadelphia, a couple of hitter's parks, he was eaten alive. Below average Change Ups and breaking Pitches to go along with a 90 to 92 MPH Fast Ball will NOT get it done in those parks.
So, get Bailey out of Cincinnati and the high expectations and extreme pressure fans are putting on him and out of a hitter's park and let a Pitching Coach work with him and get his old delivery back (and thus increase the speed of his Fast Ball) and he could be a really good Pitcher.
Keep him in Cincinnati and even if he DOES win 20 Games, he will still be considered a failure by many (because it has taken soooo long for him to "arrive").
Posted by: ctownboy | July 01, 2008 at 01:11 PM
MickS,
Bailey STILL has trade value because he is a 22 year-old Pitcher who is still considerd a top prospect and has NO history of arm problems.
As far as Dunn is concerned, look what Cleveland needs and Dunn provides.
The Indians NEED some power and Run production. Dunn can provide that and, since there is the DH in the AL, Dunn's POOR Defense wont be as much of a problem. In Cincinnati, Dunn COSTS the Reds Runs because of his BAD Defense. THis offsets some of his Run production. Plus, because of his size and weight, by the end of the year, he tires out.
Being able to DH a couple of times a week keeps him from hurting the Indians Defensively AND it keeps him fresher, longer as far as his Offense goes.
So, the Indians can much more afford Dunn if he produces Offensively and does NOT hurt the team Defensively (like he does with the Reds). Plus, with the DH, the team isn't hurt as much when Dunn does NOT come through in RBI situations.
In the NL, the Reds have to use a Pitcher to hit so when Dunn fails in RBI situations, it is compounded even more. That isn't true in the AL.
Plus, like I said, Dunn's Wife doesn't want to get too far away from her parents. IF the Reds are TRULY going on a youth movement and are wanting to dump Dunn and KGJ and their salary, then Cleveland makes a LOT of sense for Dunn and Sabathia makes a lot of sense for Cincinnati.
Also, even if Dunn becomes a Free Agent after the year, Cleveland would still be getting a couple of Amatuer Draft picks as compensation for losing him. So, the deal would then be Sabathia to the Reds for a half a year of Dunn, plus Bailey and a couple of Draft picks.
This way, the Indians DON'T look like they are entirely throwing in the towel for this year (which would cause fans to STOP going to games) AND they get some young, inexpensive talent.
Posted by: ctownboy | July 01, 2008 at 01:27 PM
Who gives a crap what Dunn's wife wants.
There is no way c.C. gets traded for a failed propspect/reclamation project and a one dimensional player in his walk year.
Offer up Cueto, Valaika and Waring and that's a different matter.
Posted by: MickS | July 01, 2008 at 01:37 PM
Wow... You Cleveland fans always crybaby around because cubs fans like to dream a little, but you guys are just as bad. "Oh, we're gonna get Gamel and LaPorta for TWO MONTHS of C.C." Or it's "we'll get Broxton and Kemp from the Dodgers for C.C.", but you know what? Those teams won't give up the future of their organizations for a rental of C.C. So this race is open to anyone. The Yanks and Red Sox would prefer to sign him, so that could count them out. I'm almost certain that the Dodgers won't give you Kemp, Broxton, or LaRoche. Kemp has like allstar potential. Besides the Dodgers need a bat... The Brewers are the most likely to get C.C. They will only offer ONE of Gamel/LaPorta though, and if they do then you can count the cubbies out, but not now.
Posted by: cubs4ever | July 01, 2008 at 01:59 PM
why would we want dunn and homer when we could have a much younger corner outfielder and at a much better salary AND a pitcher with a last name that ends in a vowel or iez... not to mention 2 other quality players.. sabathia is the BEST trading piece at the BEST time--- lots of teams competing!!! will be traded on thursday
Posted by: Bearcat1971 | July 01, 2008 at 04:42 PM
For all those saying it is impossible to get Gamel and Laporta we all know that. But the Brewers did say they would give up some of their talent "from most likely AA" to get a rental. That means one of those two guys, and probably a pitcher. If we could get that I would be more than satisfied as we could sign them longterm with limited risk. And the Cubs do have a chance...if everyone else signs, but we just assume what they will offer will not be what Shapiro is looking for. Don;t get so worked up over something that doesn't even involve us except speculating.
Posted by: Adam | July 01, 2008 at 06:02 PM
Sorry, Adam, I haven't read any of your posts before, but Darkstar and other Cleveland fans always complain about Cubbie fans. Some of my fellow Cubs fans do say rediculous things, but just like you said, don't get so worked up about speculation.
The arguments from Cubs fans are that other teams probably won't give up their top prospets. There is that risk with teams like the Brewers. Trade Gamel/LaPorta and have C.C. and Sheets walk, and then next year Fielder might walk (jake0826 pointed out the cenario in another thread). So, do the Brewers take that risk or do they keep their young talent? The Brewers do have the motivation to trade for him, but they might think twice. It's the same with almost every other team in the hunt for C.C., do we trade away our future or do we just try to sign him in the offseason? I think the Dodgers, Yanks, and Red Sox might be more willing to try and sign him as a FA.
The Cubs are still in it if the Brewers don't pony up and offer Gamel or LaPorta, but if they do offer Gamel or Laporta so be it. We'll just chase after Harden. :P

“Wow... You Cleveland fans always crybaby around because cubs fans like to dream a little, but you guys are just as bad.”
Yes, I see what you mean… I mean, here we have a whole 1 Indians casually saying “maybe just maybe we can pry both away”. But this apparently asinine hope that he attaches the word “maybe” too is easily as bad as all the Cubs fans running around saying “easily have enough” and trying to force players like Cedeno, Murton, Marshall, Fuld, now Hoffpair, etc down peoples throats in every other post, in sometimes every other thread, as if they are that “valuable”, while simultaneously proclaiming turning it down to be “stupid” ~ right?
Then later on you give yet another post with a theory of the “wont give up top prospects” like Cubs fans have been throwing out there when they hear reporters, scouts or even now the team saying they don’t have what it takes (but ironically, it seems only Cubs fans are saying this as well… weird…) Anyway, lets say that’s true ~ then that’s when the Indians just keep him and take the DPs themselves, just like they said they would probably do to begin with. But hey, whatever Cubs fans need to tell themselves to feel better I guess…
Also as a FYI, its not Indians fans that “crybaby around” (whatever that means anyway) about Cubs fans ~ pretty much everyone that is fed up with the Cubs fans throwing out the “Marshall + Cedeno + Murton easily gets ___insert star___” type stuff in seemingly every other thread... Infact, take a look in this thread; the only person to mention the Cubs were non-Indians fans and Cubs fans themselves…

Off topic of C.C., but with Casey Blake having an oddity of a season, do you think we could package him with Sabathia? Maybe we could pry Laporta and a top pitching prospect away from the Brewers? If they don't want to rush Gamel until next season and Bill Hall is doing nothing....Blake would be an obvious upgrade until the end of the season when Gamel can be called up.
Posted by: Adam | July 02, 2008 at 09:47 AM
WHY CUBS FANS DREAM:
(1) We got Aramis Ramirez for Bobby Hill.
(2) We got D. Lee for Hee Sop Choi.
(3) We unloaded the bloated salaries of Todd Hundley and Sammy Sosa.
you keep doing the math and we'll keep dreaming.
Posted by: durhambull | July 02, 2008 at 02:12 PM
Adam, I doubt they trade Blake and Sabathia together. Infact, I doubt they trade Blake at all ~ the strange obsession they have with him will probably get in the way...
Posted by: darkstar1661 | July 02, 2008 at 04:01 PM
darkstar, I actually agree with Adam. I think with the way he is hitting this year (especially with RISP) he is especially attractive to the Brewers and if a CC deal gets done with MIL, I wouldn't be surprised to see Blake as a part of it. Especially judging by the Brewers fans comments in here, they are pretty sick of Bill Hall. If there were a way to get 2 of those Huntsville kids in the same deal, adding Blake might end up being the key to it (can't beleive I just wrote that).
And for those who are saying there is no way Gamel and LaPorta will be in the same deal, realize that they really don't have anywhere to put both of them. LF and 1B are locked down, and with no DH in the NL, they are more valuable to an AL team. Not saying it is likely, just saying it is within the realm of possibility.
