« Nationals Acquire Alberto Gonzalez | Main | Ibanez Trade Unlikely »
4:05pm: Peter Abraham says Manny's team options were removed and he has agreed to decline arbitration.
3:58pm: Let's sort through this wild trade.
3:39pm: Bob Nightengale has the Bucs getting Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss from the Red Sox and Andy LaRoche and Bryan Morris from the Dodgers, correcting what looks like a typo in the Rosenthal report.
3:37pm: Rosenthal has details:
Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is headed to the Red Sox. The Pirates will receive Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Damien Moss and releiver Craig Hansen from the Red Sox.
He adds that the Red Sox will pay the $7MM remaining on Manny's contract.
3:30pm: According to SI.com's Jon Heyman. Jack Curry agrees.

Yes. Thank you.

I'm hearing Bay to the Dodgers, not Ramirez. Let's get some confirmation on these folks (not aiming at you, Tim, just all this rollercoastering from various journalists is maddening...) MLB.com is reporting Bay.
Posted by: underdog | July 31, 2008 at 03:33 PM
How many prospects are the Pirates getting then?
WOW
Posted by: Positive/Negative | July 31, 2008 at 03:33 PM
OMG. Hope this is real.
Posted by: V | July 31, 2008 at 03:33 PM
Whoa...according to SI, Bay to the Dodgers, Manny to the Pirates...then WHO GOES TO THE SOX????
HOLY CRAP
Posted by: Positive/Negative | July 31, 2008 at 03:34 PM
i am SOOOOOOOOO confused right now!
who went where?!
Posted by: bseballcrzy17 | July 31, 2008 at 03:34 PM
Thank you Ned. Thank you sooooo much. Ned makes the world go round.
Posted by: morandjp | July 31, 2008 at 03:34 PM
Nice of Heyman to gives us some details!
I'd rather these guys wait five minutes to confirm this stuff than race ahead...jeez.

GAAHHHH
So...many...conflicting...reports
Posted by: Positive/Negative | July 31, 2008 at 03:35 PM
Rosenthal:
Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is headed to the Red Sox. The Pirates will receive Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Damien Moss and releiver Craig Hansen from the Red Sox.
The Red Sox will pay all of the approximately $7 million remaining on Ramirez's contract.
Posted by: ScottBrosius | July 31, 2008 at 03:37 PM
If the Sox get Bay and the Pirates get prospects from the Dodgers and not the Sox, I'm fine with it.
Posted by: DanTheRedSoxMan | July 31, 2008 at 03:37 PM
This is a happy day for the whole AL.
Posted by: yankfan1 | July 31, 2008 at 03:37 PM
my head's gonna asplode...but i'll laugh it back together if manny's a pirate.
and it'll fall apart again if kemp goes to boston.
Posted by: JohnKruksWaistLine | July 31, 2008 at 03:37 PM
WEEi says that Manny to the Dodgers, Bay to the Sox, and four prospects to the Pirates. Which prospects, and what team they are from, is yet to be announced.
Posted by: Stan2219 | July 31, 2008 at 03:37 PM
PLEASE be
Bay/Manny ~> Dodgers
Kemp ~> Red Sox
Posted by: Zebraheaded | July 31, 2008 at 03:37 PM
If Ned sent Kemp to the Pirates, he needs to be fired...
Posted by: jrfukudome | July 31, 2008 at 03:37 PM
So----asumming this is done:
Pierre back to center?
LA had essentially 4 CF's a half-hour ago.
THEY STILL HAVE ETHEIR KEMP JONES AND PIERRE according to Rosey. LaRoche and unnamed pitching prospect went to Boston/Pit
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | July 31, 2008 at 03:38 PM
WINNER:
Pirates
If Rosenthal is correct...than holy crap...the Pirates are stacked for years to come.
At least my Sox got Bay...
Posted by: Positive/Negative | July 31, 2008 at 03:38 PM
I think the Pirates get prospects from both teams, they should.
Posted by: yankfan1 | July 31, 2008 at 03:38 PM
"Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is headed to the Red Sox. The Pirates will receive Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Damien Moss and releiver Craig Hansen from the Red Sox."
Ugh, Pittsburgh lost this trade.
Posted by: V | July 31, 2008 at 03:39 PM
God help Colletti if he traded Kemp for Manny.
Posted by: la16 | July 31, 2008 at 03:39 PM
Rosenthal was on "The Show"---to clarify, LaRoche gone, and a pitching prospect, unnamed.
Posted by: abcrazy4dodgers | July 31, 2008 at 03:39 PM
damien moss sucks - hasnt played in years. what do tyhey want with him
Posted by: hattshatt | July 31, 2008 at 03:39 PM
Ken Rosenthal on XM that he thinks it is Andy Laroche a minor League Pitcher from Dodgers to Pirates and Craig Hanson and another minor leaguer from Boston...
Posted by: ZackPhilly | July 31, 2008 at 03:39 PM
Hansen, Moss, Laroche, AA pitcher to Pittsburgh, Manny to La, Bay to Boston.
-Cafardo
This deal sucks.
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | July 31, 2008 at 03:40 PM
Big Pittsburgh win.
Posted by: morandjp | July 31, 2008 at 03:40 PM
Boston's crappy bullpen got even worse!!
Posted by: V | July 31, 2008 at 03:40 PM
what is going to happen with the Dodger outfield? Quite a collection they have.
Posted by: ZackPhilly | July 31, 2008 at 03:40 PM
(Dances)
I love this deal.
Trading Hansen, I'm still holding out hope we got Mahay or someone of the like..I wouldn't mind having Jack Wilson here either
Posted by: Bosox4416 | July 31, 2008 at 03:42 PM
I wish good luck to Joe Torre!
But if he could deal with Sheffield and Kevin Brown, he might be the one guy who can get Manny in line!
Posted by: yankeegirl49 | July 31, 2008 at 03:42 PM
Cafardo:
Pittsburg gets: Hanson Moss LaRoche Morris
Dodgers get : Ramirez
Red Sox get : Bay
Posted by: borninmainelivinginexile | July 31, 2008 at 03:42 PM
Is Pedro Alvarez going to play a corner OF with the Brothers LaRoche on the infield corners.
Posted by: Billy Heywood | July 31, 2008 at 03:42 PM
I'd rather have Bay in LA.
Posted by: la16 | July 31, 2008 at 03:42 PM
Shouldn't it be BRANDON Moss? That'd be my bet.
Posted by: Steve Adams | July 31, 2008 at 03:42 PM
"Boston's crappy bullpen got even worse!!"
I contend that losing Hanson may actually strengthen the Boston bullpen. That guy has some good stuff, but man does he suck sometimes.
Posted by: UConnHuskies | July 31, 2008 at 03:43 PM
I wonder if he meant brandon moss?
Posted by: BucSox | July 31, 2008 at 03:43 PM
must be. Damien was on the Braves last I checked - and is awful.
Posted by: ScottBrosius | July 31, 2008 at 03:43 PM
Terrible deal. The Sox gave up Manny, Moss, and Hansen for Bay? Jesus, they better have received a reliever in that package too.
Posted by: Beau | July 31, 2008 at 03:43 PM
This thing seems like a friggin disaster.
Posted by: JohnKruksWaistLine | July 31, 2008 at 03:43 PM
Wow... the Pirates sure got a haul there. I don't know if they're all going to pan out, but they got good quantity just for dealing Bay away. Looks a little Beane-esque from that angle.
Posted by: FineHamAbounds | July 31, 2008 at 03:44 PM
Who the heck is Damien Moss? Do you mean Brandon Moss?
Posted by: BigPlay | July 31, 2008 at 03:44 PM
No money to LA, -cafardo.
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | July 31, 2008 at 03:44 PM
WEEI just reported that its Brandon Moss not Damien
Posted by: Stan2219 | July 31, 2008 at 03:44 PM
The yankees have made a big trade as an answer:
Nationals acquired shortstop Alberto Gonzalez from the Yankees for RHP Johnny Nunez.
Posted by: ScottBrosius | July 31, 2008 at 03:44 PM
Great deal for the Pirates.
OK for the Sox since they had to get rid of Manny, and Bay is under control next year at a decent amount.
Dodgers sold off their 3rd baseman of the future for a 2 month rental, albeit one that improves their chances of making the post-season dramatically.
Posted by: surfacetear | July 31, 2008 at 03:46 PM
So what are the Dodgers going to do with 5 outfielders?
Posted by: cheba63 | July 31, 2008 at 03:46 PM
"No money to LA, -cafardo."
Yeah maybe not. BLECH.
Posted by: ArodSucksAtLife | July 31, 2008 at 03:46 PM
The Sox had to have secured another bullpen piece. Grabow or some other lefty in another deal. Manny, Moss, Hansen and $7M for Bay is just way too much. Not a horrible deal, in that they didn't have to part with any significant prospect. And the fact that they are going to get somewhat equal offensive production (superior defense) out of Bay for next season, while freeing up $10.5M to go after C.C. has to be considered a good thing.
Posted by: JDubbs17 | July 31, 2008 at 03:46 PM
ok if we dont give money to la than thi deal is a little more sensible. i hate to lose hansen tho
Posted by: CSIZZL3 | July 31, 2008 at 03:46 PM
Blake DeWitt is the real winner in this trade
Also - how the HELL do the dodgers get to keep Kemp AND Eithier...!?
Posted by: UGotRPK3113 | July 31, 2008 at 03:47 PM
That's a pretty decent haul for the Pirates.
Posted by: tdogg | July 31, 2008 at 03:47 PM
surfacetear, the Dodgers have basically given up on LaRoche, and believe DeWitt is their 3b of the future.
Posted by: cheba63 | July 31, 2008 at 03:47 PM
could it be that Jack Wilson was included in the deal and we don't know yet? that would make the deal a little more balanced for Boston ... and what's LA doing with six outfielders?
Posted by: PapiSox | July 31, 2008 at 03:48 PM
Ok this deal is ghey....ill tell u why.....grabow and no other relief help for the sox.....am I the only one that see's that as our main concern.....
....and to top it off the sox moved a bullpen guy in hansen(thank god it was him, about time)that still doesn't help.
Good trade for pitts and the dodgers thou
Posted by: elevenahead | July 31, 2008 at 03:48 PM
Losing Moss hurts more then losing Hansen, that kid cant cut it in this division, to much pressure.
Posted by: 04Forever | July 31, 2008 at 03:49 PM
I feel like the Sox had to get more than JUST Bay.
If we got Wilson or Grabow, its a much better deal
Posted by: UGotRPK3113 | July 31, 2008 at 03:49 PM
jdubb your a genius, cc completely slipped my mind. that 10.5 million will def come in handy next year. now if we can just get rid of lugo.... hmmm
Posted by: CSIZZL3 | July 31, 2008 at 03:49 PM
Anyone else confused about the Pirates dealing for a third baseman after they just drafted a kid (Pedro Alvarez) who could be in the Big League's as soon as next September? LaRoche is one of the most touted 3B prospects in all of baseball. Where will Alvarez fit?
Posted by: JDubbs17 | July 31, 2008 at 03:49 PM
My reaction:
Wow.
And it's Brandon Moss, not Damein...if that heasn't been said already
Posted by: Positive/Negative | July 31, 2008 at 03:49 PM
lol i love it. 2 prospects, 7 mil, and manny for jason bay. happy day for the yankees ... bay sure as hell wont hit .500 against them.
Posted by: letsgoyankees | July 31, 2008 at 03:50 PM
The Sox really could have used a bullpen arm in this deal. It's nice they got rid of Manny, but if they really coughed up Moss, Hansen, + Manny it's too much.
Posted by: Beau | July 31, 2008 at 03:50 PM
I think that LA got the worst end of this deal, but I like it for the Pirates. I think the Sox gave up too much, but its a deal they had to make. Manny needed to be out of Boston.
Posted by: UConnHuskies | July 31, 2008 at 03:50 PM
You don't worry about position with prospects, especially in the pirates organization. They'll take talent anywhere they can get it.
Posted by: morandjp | July 31, 2008 at 03:50 PM
there has to be someone else coming the sox way
Posted by: Stan2219 | July 31, 2008 at 03:51 PM
Positive/Negative- what are you talking about? What's Rosenthal saying. All I'm hearing is LaRoche, Moss, Morris, and Hansen to Pittsburgh...think I'd rather have Brignac and Niemann.
The luster is off LaRoche and the rest are: a reliever (decent, but...I hate reliever prospects; they're like jumbo shrimp- complete oxymoron), a 4th OF, and a former 1st rounder less than a year removed from TJ surgery and not exactly lighting the world on fire...my guess, he's another future reliever. Bucs got boned, you ask me.
Winner: Boston
Get rid of Manny's declining (though still pretty awesome) game and constant bitching and get a comparable, younger replacement. Theo's got some Jedi mind trick thing working or somethin'. Ridiculous.
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 31, 2008 at 03:51 PM
letsgoyankees im glad you traded for nady and marte they are chocking under the spotlights in NY like so many before them
Posted by: CSIZZL3 | July 31, 2008 at 03:51 PM
So red sox give Manny Ramirez, the balance of his contract, brandon moss and Craig Hansen for Jason Bay? Does that sound to anyone else like Boston gave up a lot for someone thats inferior to Manny?
Posted by: LetsGoOs | July 31, 2008 at 03:51 PM
Boston lost big time on this deal.
They had to give up 2 prospects for no improvement.
They don't improve with Bay because he is only going to substitute Manny's numbers.
LA can at least win the division with Manny.
Great win for Pittsburgh.
Posted by: WidespreadPanic | July 31, 2008 at 03:51 PM
"lol i love it. 2 prospects, 7 mil, and manny for jason bay. happy day for the yankees ... bay sure as hell wont hit .500 against them."
Bay, however, will play every remaining game against the Yankees.
Posted by: Beau | July 31, 2008 at 03:52 PM
maybe neccessary, but still a lot to pay to get rid of a HOF.
Posted by: borninmainelivinginexile | July 31, 2008 at 03:52 PM
And suddenly Pittsburgh has a future. They easily win this one. Dodgers probably come out as the biggest "losers" only in the sense their defense in left has become a liability... Manny is a good defender in Fenway because he's learned to use the wall, but that's it. The only way to say Boston came out ahead is the acknowledge Manny was a pain. Too bad, I always thought Hansen's breaking material was some of the nastiest I had ever seen, he just never used it right... and I had always hoped Moss would get a shot.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | July 31, 2008 at 03:53 PM
If this deal is confirmed I think it is bad for the Red Sox ....they lose Manny, and other talent... gain Bay and thats it... manny was still a force...Bay is really good but he isnt Manny and what the Sox need is relief pitching...as a yankee fan im relieved that the red Sox got Bay instead of tampa bay and Im relieved Manny is going far far far away...
Posted by: cary | July 31, 2008 at 03:53 PM
Both the Dodgers and Red Sox are immediate winners, but I think pitt is the longterm winner. They gave up their best player overall but got in return a great young prospect and theyre finally beginning to build a solid base for the future. Still many long years away from being a contender, if they ever get there. Now they just need to focus on signing pedro.
Posted by: glover28 | July 31, 2008 at 03:53 PM
Happy day for Yankees? Nope. A happy day for the Yankees would be getting rid of the ridiculous contracts of Abreu ... and Giambi ... and Jeter ... and Pavano ... and Damon ... and how about that tremendous four-year deal for Posada? GENIUS! And wait until you dingleberries pony up four years and $100 million for Manny this offseason ... choke on it, yanker
Posted by: PapiSox | July 31, 2008 at 03:54 PM
Moran....agreed, however, you do when those propects are expected to be in the majors around the same time. Maybe LaRoche ends up moving to first with the "other" LaRoche out with a back injury, but Alvarez will be there soon and then you are stuck with 2 guys, same position and not other place to put them. Outfield will be filled in two years. So while I agree that current position designation shouldn't deter a team from going after talent, I am still a bit confused how the Bucs didn't get Kemp or at least Either.
Posted by: JDubbs17 | July 31, 2008 at 03:54 PM
I hope Alvarez still signs altough this does look like their saying were not gonna sign him I sure hope they do and damn we got Walker in AAA I like the trade for the Bucs although Kemp would have been nice instead of Laroche.
Posted by: BucSox | July 31, 2008 at 03:54 PM
theo didnt give up anything we needed, Hansen cant cut it here so hes useless and Moss has no where to play. Sox dont win or lose in this trade, we are right back where we started, the only person that is happy im sure is Manny, but for what no one knows
Posted by: 04Forever | July 31, 2008 at 03:54 PM
it seems like the red sox gave up a lot, but they really didnt. we all know money isnt an issue and as good a prospect as brandon moss was, there would be nowhere for him to play in boston. Craig hansen has had more than enough opportunities to prove himself, and hes proved that he cant handle the big leagues; especially a big market club like boston. so in reality, if bay continues to play like he is and the bullpen picks it up a little (which i think they will with justin masterson) this is a good trade for the red sox.
Posted by: robc2214 | July 31, 2008 at 03:55 PM
"letsgoyankees im glad you traded for nady and marte they are chocking under the spotlights in NY like so many before them"
nady and marte are choking? i think they deserve a little more than 3 games to start calling them busts. we'll see how bay does going from the pirates to the AL east.
Posted by: letsgoyankees | July 31, 2008 at 03:55 PM
It sucks that TB couldn't get Bay, but I think we still win with Manny moving out of the division. I believe that Bay won't be able to sustain his current pace in the AL East, but he shouldn't drop off too much. My bet says Bay performs about as well as JD Drew, which is very good but still a downgrade compared to Manny.
Posted by: DRayDude | July 31, 2008 at 03:55 PM
Yeah, its Brandon Moss, not Damien. I'm pretty sure Damien's a pitcher, not an OF.
Ned Colletti fails. If the Dodgers don't make the playoffs, people will be calling for his head.
Posted by: melonis rex | July 31, 2008 at 03:56 PM
How can the Red Sox be winners? They traded Manny, Brandon Moss, and Hansen for Jason Bay. They also gave the dodgers 7mm. How can that trade be worth anything? That is the worst trade I have ever seen unless the Sox also got prospects.
Posted by: rangersfan | July 31, 2008 at 03:56 PM
Jdubb good point. In college Alvarez played first abse so knwo knows maybe he'll be the replacement for Adam Laroche. Hey The LaRoche brothers are on the same team.
Posted by: Showtime35 | July 31, 2008 at 03:56 PM
ESPN just confirmed it
Dodgers: Manny Ramirez
Red Sox: Jason Bay
Pirates: Andy LaRoche, Bryan Morris, and two unknown players.
Posted by: Sal from Tampa | July 31, 2008 at 03:58 PM
Rangersfan....you have to understand they won't have a hole in the outfield next year, and they don't have to pay $20M to fill it. They can then use that money to pursue a big-name starter. So while they "paid" a lot right now, they are also looking toward the future without effecting this year's club negatively (for the most part).
Posted by: JDubbs17 | July 31, 2008 at 03:58 PM
Hansen never got his footing thats true but he sill had amazing stuff, maybe he could never cut it boston who knows. but we still lost a bullpen arm is the point and didnt pick one up. i hope they have some mahay or ohlman reported trade comming soon.
Posted by: CSIZZL3 | July 31, 2008 at 03:58 PM
I tend to think ALL teams potentially win in this deal, though I'm still trying to figure out the outfield logjam there. I really liked LaRoche but with DeWitt and possibly Casey Blake if they resign him it's obvious they didn't fit LaRoche in with their future plans and at least for his sake he gets to be with his bro. The Dodgers get an immediate impact bat that they were lacking and assuming they lose him and offer arbitration they get a type A draft compensation for him (they're potentially loading up on high picks for next year). The Red Sox get a really solid replacement player. I know everyone thinks someone has to win and lose but frankly I see all the teams as winning this one.
Morris can be a good pitcher , too but he wasn't really fitting in with Dodgers future plans either. Probably a year or two away.
Posted by: underdog | July 31, 2008 at 03:58 PM
Wow.
Well...optimistically speaking...Bay is a better all-around player...
Posted by: Positive/Negative | July 31, 2008 at 03:58 PM
This will give Masterson a bullpen spot
Posted by: UGotRPK3113 | July 31, 2008 at 03:59 PM
holy crap, what a trade year! griffey, manny, bay, sabathia, rhodes, teixiera, blanton, harden, so many others. what a year!
Posted by: 04Forever | July 31, 2008 at 03:59 PM

Abreu, pavano and giambi will be off the books after this season, and they already dumped farnsworth. Damon is 2nd on the team in avg, so dont understand the problem there.
Posted by: letsgoyankees | July 31, 2008 at 04:00 PM
Everyone is slamming Neil Hunnington but he did exactly what he said he would do ant that is re-stock the farm. Two other points first Wilson needs to go in the off season personally I would have thrown him in this deal with Grabow and get Jed Lowrie and Delcarmenif they could. Secondly we do have a lot of money available in the off-season I think it is absolutly impairative we get Sheets obviously CC is way out of our reach.
Posted by: BucSox | July 31, 2008 at 04:00 PM
"How can the Red Sox be winners? They traded Manny, Brandon Moss, and Hansen for Jason Bay. They also gave the dodgers 7mm. How can that trade be worth anything? That is the worst trade I have ever seen unless the Sox also got prospects."
How can you possibly say that? The Red Sox got a guy who is a pretty damn good hitter, a better fielder, and a more dedicated player than Manny. They may have lost a little offensive power, but they've made it up in terms of defense.
Everybody knew that the Sox wanted Manny out -- so the fact that Theo could parlay that into Jason Bay and ONLY give up two mediocre prospects?
Posted by: Beau | July 31, 2008 at 04:01 PM
"and they don't have to pay $20M to fill it."
But they are paying 7 m to the dodgers now. So I don't see cost-savings as a big issue here.
Posted by: ScottBrosius | July 31, 2008 at 04:01 PM
"He adds that the Red Sox will pay the $7MM remaining on Manny's contract."
So basically what you're telling me here is the Dodgers Got Manny for nothing?
Andy LeRoche and Bryan Morris are grape jelly...
Apparently the sox were indeed desperate to off this guy.
Posted by: HarshInFresno | July 31, 2008 at 04:02 PM
"letsgoyankees im glad you traded for nady and marte they are chocking under the spotlights in NY like so many before them"
What are you talking about?
Nady already has hit a homer and has been hitting pretty well since the Boston series.
As for Marte, he struck out your beloved Big Papi. Thats what the Yanks need him for.
Posted by: Sal from Tampa | July 31, 2008 at 04:02 PM
"Pierre back to center?"
Not as I see it. Pierre is going to the bench and will probably platoon with Ethier. Pierre against LHP and Ethier against RHP. Manny in right against LHP, left against RHP.
"Dodgers probably come out as the biggest "losers" only in the sense their defense in left has become a liability..."
Eh, not really. It was either Pierre's noodle arm or Manny's fielding antics. Manny can still gun the ball and Kemp can cover a fair bit of the ground Pierre would have.
Posted by: AA | July 31, 2008 at 04:02 PM
BucSox....little too over-optimistic regarding Sheets. He'll command 85 percent the contract that CC does and the whole reason Huntington decided to move Bay was to dump his contract. Can't see them getting into a bidding war over a starter in the offseason.
Posted by: JDubbs17 | July 31, 2008 at 04:02 PM
Masterson already has a bullpen spot as the long reliever. we must be getting aardsma back soon thats what they have to be counting on. either that or a minor leaguer like bowden or something will make the jump here in a little to fill that spot.
Lets go yankees you have got to be kidding me, this is a good day for you? you do nothing to help your team, we rid ourselves of cancer and get out left fielder of the future. stupidity
