« Carroll's Latest: Burnett, Twins, Cardinals | Main | Walters With A Twins Scenario »
Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald writes of the Marlins' pursuit of a catcher, which has been going on for several weeks now.
The Fish would like to find an upgrade on Matt Treanor, who is currently on the DL with a hip strain. However, they're not impressed by available backstops Paul Lo Duca, Yorvit Torrealba, and Dave Ross. Jackson adds an interesting name - the Marlins asked the Tigers about Ivan Rodriguez, but he's not available at this time. They could always sign him in the offseason if the price is right.
We revisited the trade market for catchers about a week ago. Two names I haven't heard much for the Marlins are Gregg Zaun and Rod Barajas of the Jays.

Why not Saltalamacchia? He's under control for a while.

McPhearson to the Giants for Molina... he is EXACLTY what they need...
"He" is referring to both players

I'd like to see the Orioles send Ramon Hernandez (and eat 75% of his contract) to the Marlins for McPherson. Maybe throw in Bradford to not eat so much of the contract.

Bengie Molina has way more value than Dallas McPherson. Molina is an established above average catcher with the ability to hit for some pretty decent pop. There aren't a lot of those.
McPherson may be straight up mashing AAA but the fact of the matter is that he is completely unproven at the major league levevl. It'd make more sense for the Giants to acquire younger prospects.

I like this one a lot more than the Molina trade. Hernandez's value is down because of his price tag and play, but he's still been a pretty good catcher over the years. McPherson can hit 30 homers for someone

He's also 35, signed through 09 and on a HORRIBLE team. I think the Giants would be pumped to get Mcphearson and a prospect. And the Fish would be pumped to get a solid catcher who has been to the postseason before. It makes sense all the way around

As an O's fan, can we amend that Ramon/Chad/$$$ deal to include, say, Chorye Spoone and, instead of McPherson (or in addition if the Fins are feeling generous) have the return be Logan Morrison and a whatever prospect filler they want to hand over?

I like the Giants/Marlins trades being thrown around. I think that the Marlins would have to give up more than McPherson who is unproven, and has some injury risk. McPherson and a mid lvl prospect would do.
If I was the Blue Jays I would be aggressively trying to sell Barajas who is having a reasonable year. I think Barajas could net some kind of prospect.
I think that Lo Duca or Torrelba would be GOOD ENOUGH for the marlins.

The Fish should get Johjima on the cheaps. Him or Hernandez. Either way the team has to eat some money

Why would SF want Dallas? He is signed only through this year. The Giants aren't doing anything in 08 - why trade for a 2 month rental unless it's a pure salary dump?
Molina still holds value. His contract isn't that bad compared to his performance. If they want to move Molina it should be for someone who can help in 09/10.

Marlin's fan here.
I think us trading Uggla makes alot of sense but I don't see the Marlins front office trading him anytime soon. If it where up to me I would trade him him though, as we have a pretty good replacement in (AA) who is close to MLB ready in Chris Coughlan, plus by trading Uggla we can fill other needs.
Joelcards
I think Uggla(alone)will probably cost you guys Rasmus and B. Anderson and if we added a lets say S.Olsen then you guys would have to probably add a D.Jones and a lets say Anothny Reyes. That my .02
Even crazier
J Williangham, Olsen, Uggla for Rasmus, B. Anderson, A. Reyes, D. Jones, and Chris Perez
Of course this is all crazy talk lol but I think it can work out for both teams

Texas would not trade Salty right now after a year they traded Teixiera for him. Plus he's their future catcher why would they? Rangers look to have a fine young hitters for a while
C Jarrod Saltalamacchia
1B- Chris Davis
2B- Ian Kinsler
CF- Josh Hamilton
RF- David Murphy
LF- Brandon Boggs
with also starting pitching
Brandon McCarthy
Kason Gabbard
and Joaquin Arias as a starting SS soon they will pretty good.
I see this
SP- Brandon McCarthy
SP- Kason Gabbard
C- Jarrod Saltalamacchia
1B- Chris Davis
2B- Ian Kinsler
3B- Michael Young
SS- Joaquin Arias
RF- David Murphy
CF- Josh Hamilton
LF- Brandon Boggs

I have no clue who the Marlins could possibly pick up, but if I were Dan O'Dowd I'd be on the phone trying to sell the Marlins on Yorvit Torrealba. Chris Iannetta is way too good of a young hitter to be platooning with an overrated catcher like Torrealba.
What about Gerald Laird in all this? He should be back off injury in a couple of weeks.

Mike Napoli should go to Marlins. When he gets off the DL.

joel:
You've posted in a few different threads about the Cards getting Uggla from Florida. It's not happening. The Fish dumped Willis and Cabrera on Detroit for salary reasons, plus Willis had lost it and Cabrera weighed 270 lbs. Uggla is still under team control for 3 more years (even if they are arb years) and has not yet reached his prime. You couldn't get him for Rasmus and another top prospect, and besides that I don't think that Florida will decide whether or not they are out of it in the NL East until well after the trading deadline.
