« Twins Looking For A Second Baseman? | Main | Cardinals Could Deal Lohse »
8:39am: SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Mets have "kicked around" the idea of acquiring Ian Snell from the Pirates and using him in relief for the rest of the year. Snell is signed through 2010 with club options for '11 and '12. It's tough to see the Bucs moving him, even in an off year.
8:13am: According to David Lennon of Newsday, the Mets are not finding a deal to their liking for a reliever or outfielder. They've put pretty much all of their good prospects off-limits - Fernando Martinez, Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz or Bobby Parnell.
Players such as Raul Ibanez, Brian Fuentes, George Sherrill, and J.J. Putz have all been on the radar. But the Mets just don't like the prices. Lennon says they still might move Scott Schoeneweis though.

They put all their decent prospects as off limits and then are surprised that they can't find a deal to their liking? Only the Mets...

Trading Schoeneweiss doesn't seem like a good move to me. He has been good against lefties, why dump him off?

Nice "objective" comment Looney4baseball.
Mets prospects would not be off limits if the deal was right. The offers thus far have been somewhat insulting. The Yankees got Nady for Olendorf and Tabata, whose stock has fallen significantly over the last year. If the Mets were offered a deal for Holliday I'm sure their prospects would be available.

napes22:
Because you don't need to have 2 lefty specialists in the pen. The Mets are in desperate need of a "long man".

Carlos Muniz seemed to do a decent job of that last night. And don't discount the buzz about making Heilman a starter--he's pitched five innings over his last two appearrances.

If Schoeneweis is moved I won't be crying. He could be someone else's ''lefty specialist'' for all I care. He has been nothing more than a league-average reliever over the course of his career and he certainly wasn't worth all that money to begin with.
And as for the bigger players that the Mets were targeting, I believe they will go after an outfielder post-July 31 because the price will go down and well, that's how the Mets operate. Look at the Shawn Green deal in 2006.

go get manny omar your job is in jeapordy. stop we are new york for god sakes. tatis will come down to earth and endy chavez will be exposed do something we dont need snell. manny for anyone . or get holliday

The Mets have 2 lefty specialists. Righties are hitting over .320 against both. They have their long man in Muniz or Collazo. They need another strong righty or lefty who can get both sides out.

As odd as this sounds to me now, I feel that Scott Shoenwiess is one of the few guys I trust in the bull pen. I think the Mets overpayed for him, seeing that he is a lefty specialist now, but I think he is really good at it.
Loosing him will weaken the pen significantly.
Now this Ian Snell thing is sort of out of the blue.

the hubris by mets fans (i am one, by the way) is downright embarassing. you have to give to get and it seems we are so afraid to repeat the kazmir fiasco that we've become a stunted organisation.
consider 2005, the mets could have had manny for lastings milledge. how did that one work out...?
now, the marlins have a shot at him and making themselves better and mets fans want to place the hopes of recapturing the division in the hands of fernando tatis and endy chavez along with a VERY suspect bullpen.
i mean, what if church doesn't come back? worse yet, he does come back and he's not as effective as showed to be early in the year? then what?
this is the only time i will give the yankees credit. if there's a deficiency somewhere, they don't wait around hoping the internal options do the job, they go out and plug the hole and worry about the details later.
at this point, if the mets can get an adam dunn and jonathan neise has to go, you have to consider it. let's keep in mind with the waiver deal, who's to say anyone the mets want a crack at doesn't get blocked by the phillies, marlins or even the braves out of spite?

I have no problem if Omar wants to punt with this trading deadline. We will be a better team in the long run for it. Fill the holes in free agency.

By the way, the Yanks had prospects to give because they did not give up four prospects in exchange for one of the best pitchers on the planet.
If the Mets did not spin four prospects to the Twins they woudl have no trouble in pulling a deal off.
They just need a year a or two to restock the system.
Niese by the way Ked 6 and did not allow a run in 6 or seven innings in AAA.
Posted by: coolpapabell | July 31, 2008 at 09:07 AM
It's still unbelievable how we got nothing for Kazmir, yet hold Heilman so dear. Let him and one of the prospects go, and go get us the righty corner outfield bat we need! How did the Yanks get so much from Pitt for so little? MLB conspiracy???

Forget some of these mediocre players. Go all in for Street or Manny/Bay. If you have to give up your best prospects, might as well get the best you can.
Posted by: icedrake523 | July 31, 2008 at 09:37 AM
Snell would be a great addition. He has the potential to be a plus #3 guy; plus, the Mets only have 3 pitchers locked up for next year in Johan, Pelfrey, and Maine.
This would give us leverage in the offseason seeing as we don't neccesarily need a 5th starter if we just use Niese.
How about Bobby Parnell and Mike Carp for Snell? Maybe even add F-Mart and a Mike Delaney/Nick Carr in order to get Bay too.
