No way the Rangers trade Chris Davis. No way.
Posted by: Mike Simms | July 30, 2008 at 02:23 PM
Trading Chris Davis is pure speculation and would never happen, not even for Francisco Liriano. He's going to play first for a couple of years until Smoak is ready, then he'll move to third.
Once again, JD has made a few dumb trades, but he's not that dumb (he has made a few great trades, too).
These are the position players that Texas would consider trading, I imagine: Nelson Cruz, John Mayberry, Gerald Laird, Jarrod Salty, Joaquin Arias, Nate Gold, Ramon Vasquez, and Brandon Boggs. (Blalock's probably got zero value after his latest injury)
You have to think that all those highly-touted prospects down in AA are decidedly off-limits.

I would love to get Greinke on our team. He is a young pitcher with really good stuff, but if you think that Crush Davis is going anywhere then your an idiot.
Posted by: rangersfan | July 30, 2008 at 02:35 PM
Sure, but would you consider trading Davis for Jonathan Sanchez?
Posted by: Steve Soto | July 30, 2008 at 02:42 PM
Daniels is a helluva GM, Chris Young/Adrian Gonzalez deal excluded, and to imply that trading Davis would fall into that category of mistake is ridiculous. Liriano? What are you, slow? Kid's only the best southpaw under 25 in the game; a legitimate future ace. Minnesota wouldn't offer, but if, in some alternate dimension, they DID, Daniels would snap that up in a heartbeat!
Not only do the Rangers have a number of solid options beyond Davis at first- beginning with Smoak, who won't take long, and including Salty and Ramirez (many don't think he'll stick behind the plate)- but the pressing need for the organization is pitching.
Liriano was hyperbole, I understand, but I'd bet Daniels would absolutely consider a Greinke for Davis deal. You're talking about a talented young arm likely to become AT LEAST a No. 2 starter, possibly even an ace.
Are you guys really so home run crazy that you think it worth hanging on to another slugger over developing a legit pitching staff capable of overcoming the disadvantage created by the Rangers' home park? Hamilton for Volquez, thus far, looks like a draw, but when you take into consideration the team's strengths vs. weaknesses, I wonder if Daniels wouldn't trade back if he had the opportunity?! Perhaps. Perhaps not. Either way, with Kinsler, Young, Hamilton, Blalock, etc. in place and more promising bats in the system, I don't think he'd make the same decision were he presented with another slugger for proven young ace-caliber arm, deal again.
I know you're a fan and like YOUR guys, but think bigger. You guys have the parts to be a World Series player in the near future. It's all going to come down to the rotation.

davis isn't going anywhere, though whoever said they wouldn't trade him for liriano should really think about that a little more. i love davis, but liriano could be incredible for the rangers, so i can't throw out something like that (but its a moot point, because it will never happen).
i would love for salty and laird to bring back a good haul of pitchers (personally i would like ian kennedy and/or masterson...ideally buchholz but i dont think that will ever happen).
too bad hank got hurt, because if we could have landed sanchez that would have been great. maybe there is a deal still out there for the rangers to get him.
Posted by: tmoney352 | July 30, 2008 at 02:51 PM
Soto- are you serious? Greinke is better than Sanchez.
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 30, 2008 at 02:52 PM
tmoney- thank you! That Liriano crap was absurd. You guys are in a great position to deal one or more of your catchers and bring back a stud pitching prospect or two. If I were Daniels...well, if I were Daniels, I'd have a MUCH cooler job, but if I were Daniels in this case, I'd be working the phones, trying to pick up a front-line type. The Sox could bite for, say, Max and reliever; not Buchholz, but maybe Masterson or Bowden, which would be pretty awesome.

agree with milehigh for the most part, but the chris young deal wasn't the worst move made by JD. at least we thought we were getting a legit pitcher at the time in eaton (he had a solid season before, not that i thought it was a good idea at all), and otsuka actually did help the team while he was in texas.
worst moves??? how about soriano for basically brad wilkerson???
or try john danks for brandon "always on the DL" mccarthy.
those are by far the worst trades. but he is making up for it lately, with signings like bradley, and deals like the gagne deal. i just hope he can pull something miraculous with laird and salty and bring in some great arms.

Boof "I need a change of environment" Bonser to the Rangers, and Ramon "I want to play every day" Vasquez to the Twins.
Get JD on the phone...

I do not think JD would ever even consider a take back on the Hamilton deal. Chris Davis is a local kid who will for many years put people in the stands. He is a slugger but if you look back he hits for average. Smoak is not even signed yet and he is no where near Arlington. He will be up in a few years at the earliest and our first base options are fairly thin. Oh wait never mind we have Hank Blalock maybe one day he could play for a week without injury.
Posted by: rangersfan | July 30, 2008 at 02:58 PM
rangersfan- LOL on the Blalock comment.
Please do not mistake what I'm saying about Davis. I'm sold on the kid. He's a beast and I DO think he'll hit for average AND power. My point was that even WITH all that, Daniels would have to at least consider moving him for a top young arm (depending on said arm). Liriano, for instance, would be a no-brainer (though I hate to use that as the hypothetical, since the Twins would NEVER consider moving him).
Also, I wasn't saying Daniels WOULD take back the Hamilton deal, but having MADE IT, I don't think he'd AGAIN swap an ace-caliber arm for a slugger- even one who hits for average (or in this case, NOT swap the slugger for an ace-caliber arm).
I'm surprised you think Smoak will take so long. What are you basing this on. All reports I read about him coming into the draft, remarked that he was among the most polished hitters in the class- like Carter a guy capable of hitting for average and power; like Tex, one capable of doing it from both sides of the plate- as well as a near-ready defender at first with Gold Glove potential (also reminiscent of a certain former Rangers first baseman).
I love Carter and don't think that Daniels would trade him for anything BUT an elite young arm with enormous upside, but I think he'd do it for the chance at a guy to build the rotation around. Just a difference of opinion, really, and one that- above all else- speaks volumes for Carter and for the Rangers' farm system as a whole. Amazing when you consider the shape it was in just two years ago!

I believe this deadline and the offseason are the most important decision times for Texas. By my account, only 3 position players are untouchable; Hamilton, Kinsler, and Davis. Utilize Bradley, Young, Laird, and others to bring back top level pitching. It is vital that this team turn solid vets into Solid Pitching. Much easier to find a stop gap position player in free agency than pitchers in free agency.

Crap...said Carter a couple times, when I meant Davis. I always screw up those blah names. Anyway...replace all Carters with Davis in above post.
Posted by: milehigh78 | July 30, 2008 at 03:49 PM
It's really unlikely, but I like the Grienke-for-Davis idea. Both are the kind of players fans think should be untouchable--young talents with star upside. What everyone needs to accept is, if you want to acquire a potentially great player, you might have to give one up in return.
This would be an exciting that addresses the weaknesses of both teams, without trying to rip anyone off. Kind of reminds me of Volquez-for-Hamilton from the off-season.
Posted by: Nathan | July 30, 2008 at 04:14 PM
A couple of other considerations: Grienke has already been in the majors several years, while Davis is a rookie. That means the Rangers would be giving up 5 years of Davis for 2-3 (not sure, really) years of Grienke. On the other hand, Grienke has already established himself as a well-above average starter, with potential for further improvement, while Davis has yet to hit MLB pitching. Davis' high strikeout rate and mediocre minor league OBPs also indicate that, while he certainly has tremendous power, he's no lock to be a regular All-Star. Offensively, Adam Dunn might be more comparable than Teixeira.
Taking all this into account, I suspect the Rangers would need another mid-level pitching prospect (of which the Royals have several) to render this fair. Daniel Cortes or Carlos Rosa might be asking too much, but maybe Julio Pimentel would work?
Posted by: Nathan | July 30, 2008 at 04:38 PM
You're crazy if you think the Royals give up their best pitcher (who is only 24) plus prospects for a kid that is limited to 1B and only has 100 mlb ab's that are inflated by his home park.
Posted by: Billy Heywood | July 30, 2008 at 06:46 PM
the only way the royals would give up Greinke is if they are clearly getting the better side of the trade and even if they were offered someone Davis i still dont see the royals sending Zack packing
Posted by: kcroyals | July 30, 2008 at 07:07 PM
billy heywood - inflated hr #'s for davis-> 5 at home, 5 on the road. davis has as much upside as anyone, and he is versatile too (played 3b in the minors, and tonight is playing 3b as well).
you're crazy if you are underestimating davis. expect him to continue to put up strong numbers. and by the way, the royals right now aren't even close to being as potentially good as than the rangers.
Posted by: tmoney352 | July 30, 2008 at 08:26 PM
tmoney you don't think his numbers are inflated at all during 100 ab sample? and he has more upside? Davis is hitting a HR every 10 at bats, you think he is going to improve on this?
That is a small sample and he has been on fire all year (probably would be minor league player of the year if not for the call up) no one has seen how he will handle himself in a slump, Billy Butler's minor league are similar if not superior, you don"t know what you really have in a player until 400 ABs at least.
Davis only above avg tool defensively is his arm, and he doesn't have the glove to play third everyday according to BA making the OF only a short term option before he slows down more.
With that said the Royals would definately not give up more than Grienke for Davis they would probably be the team requiring more in the trade.
You're right the Rangers have a lot of potential in their rotation, Padilla has the best ERA with 4.56 other than Feldman the rest have an ERA above 5.5
Posted by: Billy Heywood | July 30, 2008 at 08:50 PM
Billy Heywood,
I agree that Grienke is probably a better player right now than Davis. As a Royals fan, I'm certainly in no hurry to chase him out of KC. On a pure talent-for-talent level, the Royals would require more in a trade. But don't you think the fact that he's already expended several years of big-league service time alters things? He's already into arbitration, if I recall correctly.
