« Stark's Latest: Aurilia, Fuentes, Orlando Cabrera | Main | Red Sox One Of Five Teams Pursuing Ohman »
2:44pm: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick also heard the Marlins were eyeing Jeremy Affeldt and David Weathers of the Reds.
12:47pm: Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald is reporting that the Marlins could be close to landing Arthur Rhodes from the Mariners.
The Marlins could be closer to a deal to acquire left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes from the Seattle Mariners, who are looking only for a midlevel minor-league prospect in return. Rhodes, 37, is 2-0 with a 3.83 ERA in 35 relief appearances this season.
Yesterday we heard that the Marlins were targeting several left-handed relievers and it looks like they have narrowed their focus to Rhodes.
With many teams balking at the asking price for relievers such as Brian Fuentes and George Sherrill, we have heard of several teams showing more interest in Rhodes (ie. the Brewers).

Please be something decent.

Hopefully its Jacobs that is going to Seattle

Are you guys joking??? Rhodes has close to no value, and he's old! A high-risk, medium reward player is what it'll be.

Is Jacobs that bad? Or do the Marlins need a LOOGY?
Posted by: Bane | July 30, 2008 at 01:01 PM
No he's not at all. I don't know what FishFan is talkin about.

No way they would get Jacobs. Tim, I am very very bored. I have been patient with you. Let's get some more posts. Please. For all of us, we're dying for more updates.

He's workin, don't worry.

Hope this goes down. With Rhodes out of the picture, teams in need of a lefty have to start thinking about meeting the O's asking price for Sherrill (I said THINKING). I'm not making a valuation of actual worth, but if the O's can get a top prospect for their converted closer, I'll be giddy.

As a Mariners fan; I would be thrilled to get any prospect back for Rhodes.

Milehigh:
Sherrill should not be viewed as a LOOGY. He can go multiple innings and look at his splits. He is an upper tier reliever, not to be uttered in the same breath as Rhodes, Schoenweis, or Mahay.

Jacobs is terrible. He doesn't hit for average, doesn't work a count, can't take walks and fields like a DH.
I would much rather us call up Dallas McPherson and move Cantu over to 1st.

Rhodes will only garner a middling prospect I imagine. Rhodes has been VERY solid lately and is looking better and better every time out.
But like said above. He's pretty old and is pretty much a LOOGY. The Mariners will get some AA kid back that you never heard of.

Bane-
ummm...What?! Dude, where did I imply Sherrill was anything less than an upper tier reliever? I'm an O's fan and, as such, have had plenty of experience watching Sherrill this year. His peripheral numbers are high, due to his sometimes maddening tendency to 'up the drama,' but he consistently gets the job done, as demonstrated by his save percentage. He's just one of those guys who needs the pressure to thrive.
I completely agree that he's not a LOOGY and that his name shouldn't be uttered in the same sentence with guys like Rhodes, et. al. Frankly, you're preaching to the converted here. Not sure where the confusion comes from, but I'm on your side here.

I don't know what's more boring...an Arthur Rhodes, Latroy Hawkins, or Adam Everett rumor.
You truly do cover EVERYTHING.
Posted by: saul77 | July 30, 2008 at 01:49 PM
Of the three, Arthur Rhodes wins the most boring.
Latroy Hawkins and Adam Everett were at least playing on teams in playoff contention. Rhodes is a completely forgotten player on a team that there's no reason to pay attention to unless you're a fan. I honestly didn't even know that Rhodes was still in the majors until seeing the rumors.

You're sure Arthur Rhodes isn't 206 years old?
I thought he pitched for Earl Weaver and George Bamberger.

Given that Epstein seems to pickup the relievers I always really want NY to go for, I fully expect Affeldt to end up in Boston for a lower than expected return.
