Rosenthal's Latest: Burrell, Rockies

Ken Rosenthal over at FOX Sports has up a new Full Count video up:

  • The Phillies want Pat Burrell back, and they feel they have a better than 50-50 chance of re-signing him because Burrell has mutual interest. Rosenthal thinks Burrell should command somewhere between $14MM and $17MM per season.
  • Rosenthal discusses the Rockies' offseason, throwing out the usual suspects (Matt Holliday, Garrett Atkins, and Todd Helton) as possible trade pieces. Rosenthal points out Helton's salary makes him difficult, and also proposes a scenario in which the Rockies trade both Atkins and Holliday, sign Burrell to play left field, and move Ian Stewart to third base full-time.

What about a blockbuster like:

Angels get:
Holliday
Atkins

Rockies get:
Figgins
GMJ
Wood/Brown/Morales
Weaver/Adenhart
Bulger

You mentioned this trade before and I laughed at you then... I'll break it down, again.

1) Gary Mathews... why on earth would the Rockies take his contract. He not only doesn't make the Rockies better but gives them an albatross contract.

2) Bulger is 30 and has yet to show he's anything more than a AAA player. This makes his value a little more than a bag of half popped pop corn.

3) A package of Figgins, Adenhart, and Wood might get discussions going on Holliday... but that means out of the goodness of their hearts they'll throw in Atkins for garbage.

4) As witnessed by the Marlins/Tigers blockbuster, it is much more beneficial for a team to separate 2 stars in trades.

5) And finally, your trade is biased and seems to believe the world functions the same way a video game would.

Fine if you think Im biased then what about:

Angels get:
Holliday
Atkins
Colonel

Rockies get:
Kendrick
Wood/Brown/Morales/Rodriguez
Weaver/Adenhart
GMJ
Cash (1/2 GMJ contract)

I would love not to give up Kendrick because I think he will be a batting champion for years to come, but that would be a fair trade.

Sean Rodriguez, not Frankie.

I dont think you understand the concept that purple is trying to explain. The Angels would have to give up another prospect or two just for the Rockies to take Gary Matthews off their hands. He has negative trade value. The package would have more value if you simply removed him and didn't replace him.

And even in your scenario of eating half Gary's contract, it still doesnt make him valuable, although I guess it is a start. Another thing. If the Rockies are selling off Atkins and Holliday they are rebuilding and trying to get younger. Adding GMJ would be counter productive in that he would be making a nice chunk of change for a team trying to rebuild. It just doesnt make sense.

Let the Rocks keep Atkins. Angels need Figgins to lead off. He plays a decent 3B. No need for a change.

Holliday is interesting but not someone that I would overpay for. You get him for one year. He has career lousy splits away from Coors. And even if you resign him the cost will be $18-22m/year.

I do the Holliday deal only if it's structured like the Tex trade. I don't mind giving up one young established ML player plus decent prospects. More than that and it will be significantly over paying for the guy.

If Colorado is holding out for some similar deal to the Tex trade between the ATL and Texas they will be making a serious mistake. I don't think anyone is going to be giving up prospect packages like that again unless you're talking about a Pujols type player being involved.

I know he has negative trade value, but in order for the Angels to take on the salaries of Atkins and Holliday they have to remove salary so GMJ would have to be moved. That's roughly 15 mil the Angels are adding. As for the extra prospect, would a guy like Ben Johnson work (C @ AA hitting .266 20HR 77RBI).

"Let the Rocks keep Atkins. Angels need Figgins to lead off. He plays a decent 3B. No need for a change."

In the 2nd trade I proposed Figgins wasn't in it. I gave up Kendrick, but would keep Figgins to replace Howie at second. He could still lead off for the Angels.

"Holliday is interesting but not someone that I would overpay for. You get him for one year. He has career lousy splits away from Coors."

Holliday is a great player and great hitter, this year he is hitting .307 away from Coors, by no way is that bad.

Angels want to get rid of GMJ just for the fact he sucks. His huge contract, that everyone thought was dumb, is another sitcking point. But only the Angels want a $10 mil 4th OF.

To tell you the truth I can't see the Angels getting Holliday. How about the Rangers? I know they have money. And an offer of D.Murphy, Salty plus a few other prospects could get it done.

"Angels want to get rid of GMJ just for the fact he sucks. His huge contract, that everyone thought was dumb, is another sitcking point. But only the Angels want a $10 mil 4th OF."

That's completely false. The Angels want to get rid of his CONTRACT. If GMJ was making 5 mil, which is what he's worth, then the Angels would gladly keep him as their 4th/5th outfielder but since he has the 10 mil salary they would have to get rid of him if they wanted Holliday.

And no, he doesn't suck, he's not worth 10 mil, but he doesn't suck. He is a great outfielder off the bench but he is having a poor season. However you have to remember he is playing this season with a torn ligament in his knee.

"To tell you the truth I can't see the Angels getting Holliday."

Yeah he may not be an Angel but the Angels were seriously interested in Holliday at the trade deadline this year, and next year if GA is not resigned then the Angels have a major hole in LF.

"And an offer of D.Murphy, Salty plus a few other prospects could get it done."

An Angels offer of Adenhart and either Kendrick or Brown/Wopod/Morales is much better than the Rangers offer of Murphy and Salty.

Supposed to be Brown/WOOD/Morales. My bad.

Plus too, the Rangers already have a great offense, they just need pitching. So if they were to trade Murphy or Salty it would be for pitching not Holliday.

Burell is going get resigned and the Phillies will trade Howard to the AL for a major league player and 2 or 3 prospects.

Trading Kendrick is an even worse idea. He is going to be a star.

It's been discussed over and over again. All I will say is look at Holliday's 3 year split (BA/OBP/SLG/OPS):

H: 370/430/676/1.106
A: 281/343/466/809

A 300 point swing in OPS isn't something you just sweep under the rug and pretend that it doesn't exist.

Let's just say that he manages to keep up his Coors production in Anaheim. Maybe then he is worth a package like you proposed.

Then again, what if he turns into the away player? Or maybe something in between? You would be grossly overpaying in talent and money.

Yeah I know, he is gonna be a batting champion. I dont want to trade Howie I just know that is what they're gonna ask for. Howie/Santana/Saunders and prospects.

Yankeesfan92, while I wouldn't necessarily mind what you think is going to happen actually happening, it's just wishful thinking. The Phillies will hold onto Howard for a year, at least, too long.

The Phillies won't keep Burrell and Howard. If Burrell is kept, Howard is as good as gone. The AL fits better than the NL because of the DH and Howard is arguably a DH with a glove. The only untouchables on the Phillies are Hamels and Utley.

The Phillies are the dumbest organization in baseball...They need to stop being cheap and give Howard the money that want he deserves it and they have it...Man they need new ownership bad.

Burrell won't be back because he'll be 32 this year and is not worth being stuck with for another 4 or 5 years.

"You mentioned this trade before and I laughed at you then... I'll break it down, again."

Actually, if you look at some of the combinations he threw out, the Rockies would be stupid not to take it and buy Tony Reagins a parting gift as Arturo Moreno showed him the door. Figgins/Weaver/Wood/Bulger is worth more than Holliday and Atkins, even with GMJ included for salary relief. Kendrick/Weaver/Wood/Bulger and GMJ at half price is even worse for the Angels. Weaver is a proven MLB pitcher who would immediately slot in as a number 2 starter with the Rockies. That said, the Angels aren't so stupid as to do such a deal. If they wouldn't do the Cabrera deal, they are sure as hell not going to do this one.

"I dont want to trade Howie I just know that is what they're gonna ask for. Howie/Santana/Saunders and prospects."

Then why in the world would you even suggest such a crazy idea? The Angels have absolutely zero need for Matt Holiday and certainly not for Garrett Atkins.

angelsfan

a big hole in LF if GA is gone??
LF is easily the easiest position in MLB to fill (unless you are the mets)
and, while no one would admit it, the angels probably can't wait to get GA off the books

"Then why in the world would you even suggest such a crazy idea? The Angels have absolutely zero need for Matt Holiday and certainly not for Garrett Atkins."

I didn't suggest a crazy idea, I said the Rox would ask for Howie OR Saunders OR Santana and prospects, not all three AND prospects! And yes the Angels do have a need for Holliday. He would fill the hole in left field and would provide a replacement for the hole in the lineup if Tex left.

"LF is easily the easiest position in MLB to fill (unless you are the mets)"

Well then if GA leaves then there is a huge hole in LF. But if you say there isnt then who would it be? Nobody from the Angels (not Matthews) unless its Figgins, but then you would get Atkins.
