Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle has a slew of A's hot stove info for us today.
- Pending free agents include Mark Ellis, Frank Thomas, Emil Brown, and Keith Foulke. All except Ellis are certainly goners.
- Huston Street trade talks may resume with the team that claimed him in August. All we know is that it was a non-contender. Street is under team control through 2010, and could earn $5MM next year.
- The A's aren't planning to trade Justin Duchscherer, and are currently just hoping his hip will be OK for '09.
- Shortstop Bobby Crosby will earn $5.25MM next year. He racked up 605 plate appearances this year, the most since his rookie year. However, he didn't hit or play acceptable defense. Interest in him will not be high.
- Lefty reliever Alan Embree spoke of "positive dialogue" between him and Billy Beane regarding his next year. Embree posted a 4.96 ERA, so maybe the A's will decline his $3MM option and re-sign him for less.
- Kirk Saarloos is a non-tender candidate.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference A's Rumors: Street, Crosby, Embree:
Kind of interesting how much of the thinking captured in "Moneyball" is coming back to bite them.

Kirk is horrible. However, he is better than DiNardo or Meyer as the blowout guy. He'll give you 5 innings if the starter is out by the 2nd inning (which generally means blowout).
If I see Alan Embree in the A's bullpen again, I will be sick. Duchscherer is your veteran presence.
I think the A's should eat most of Crosby's salary, and trade him for a prospect who has had much stigma and has struggled but still has upside.

Huston Street should be traded. There is absolutely no reason to keep him. Devine has sole dominion of the closer's spot for now IMO. Ziegler should be 8th inning guy.
Street has much more value in a trade than he does as the A's 7th-8th(sometimes)inning guy.

The A's could be looking at a very good draft next year given that a lot of players could sign with other teams.
Ellis/Foulke/Embree/Brown type B agents?
Thomas type A?
Anybody know where I can find a list if a player is type a or b?

foulke, embree, brown, and thomas won't net any draft picks. none of them are going to be type b or better. embree might but then they would have to offer arbitration which he would take because he will not get much of an offer elsewhere. no way they offer this to him. with ellis' injury i wonder if he would take arbitration, wouldn't be bad for either party as ellis replenishes his value.
As far as street, I believe he should be the closer next year. He bounced back solid and having 3 closers is not a bad thing, especially with young pitching and two of them are still cheap. The position that I see being traded is outfielders. Between the 5 up already and brown and dolittle getting close somebody needs to go. Sweeney would net a good return. Trading Smith, Eveland, Braden would also not be a bad move as they are servicable and the organization can replace them easily. I see anderson and simmons in the pro's next year for sure with cahill not far behind. Then there is also gio.

What do you guy's think oaklands top ten prospects will be heading into next year? Here is my list post yours. I saw a lot of ports games so I will probably overrate some of them.
1. trevor cahill
2. brett anderson
3. michael inoa
4. chris carter
5. adrian cardenas
6. aaron cunningham
7. james simmons
8. jemile weeks
9. corey brown
10. gio gonsalez
with henry rodriguez, mike mazzaro, andrew carigan, josh donaldson, josh outman, sean dollitle, brett hunter, and tyson ross looking on the outside in. Post yours, this shows how the a's farm is stacked. the top four have star potential.

Pure speculation here...
Luis Castillo had a passable .355 OBP last year. Yeah, he's playing with knees held together by glue, but that shouldn't take much interest from Billy Beane. I wonder if Omar Minaya ate just about all of Luis' contract salary, if a Castillo for Bobby Crosby swap could make sense. Crosby could probably use a change of scenary, and would be the Mets everyday second baseman next year. It'd allow Daniel Murphy to play a corner OF spot next year, where he's more familiar than he is at 2nd base.
And if Mark Ellis leaves the A's for more money, Castillo could platoon with Donnie Murphy, Pennington, or whoever's else would be playing second base next year. Just an idea, but it could help out both clubs.
