Hampton Will Consider Astros

MLB.com's Alyson Footer has some quotes from free-agent-to-be Mike Hampton regarding Houston:

"I've always loved this place.  Definitely. I'm sure there will be interest on both sides. We'll see if we can work something out. I've always loved it here."

Hampton, 36, showed promise in thirteen starts this year.  He could be a useful back of the rotation addition for Houston.  Many teams might consider him (Rockies excluded).

Considering what Hampton has done the last four or five years he really should consider any and every major league team that might be willing to offer him a job and not just the ones that have great schools in the area.

Hampton as quoted by David O'Brien of the AJC:

“I do feel I owe the Braves some loyalty,” he said. “So we’ll see. I know a lot of guys on the team want me back, and Bobby wants me back.”

I feel that if the Braves make any offer close to whatever else he would get offered he should take it. He does sort of owe them.

"Considering what Hampton has done the last four or five years he really should consider any and every major league team that might be willing to offer him a job and not just the ones that have great schools in the area."

If he wants great public schools, he should latch on with the Red Sox or a NY team and live in CT. That said, with all the money this guy has made in his life, there should be no trouble sending his kids to whatever the local elite private school is.

If Hampton really still wants to pitch, and it does seem he is still able to pitch in the back of a rotation, he should take a Chan Ho Park-esque deal and pitch his way into the back of the rotation. He could also be useful as a pinch hitter in the vein of Micah Owings.

If he's looking solely for education, then Toronto is his obvious choice. Education standards are much higher in Canada. That doesn't mean I think he is a good fit there, but he could be.

Hampton was just ok enough to make some GM to think "Wow, this guy might actually be able to contribute for the next couple of years!"

The funny part will be watching him get ten starts in next year before breaking a bone in his body that no one has ever heard of.

The Astros should only go after Hampton if they fail to sign Randy Wolf. Wolf has been solid with the team and (obviously) has been much more durable. With Wandy Rodriguez also destined to be in the Astros starting rotation, I don't think they would go for a third lefty.

The school thing was meant as a joke, because when he signed the big contract one of his reasons was because the Denver area had great schools, and not solely because Colorado went above and beyond what anyone else was willing to offer. I don't care which team he signs with there is always a quality school somewhere in the area.

I believe he will get a multi-year contract with minimal strings attached and that team will regret it when he shatters his arm in eight places while hailing a cab.

I think the Astros should go after AJ Burnett.I also heard that they will be active in the CC Sabathia talks. But probably just to have other teams raise their biddings. The Yankees probably won't sign him now, so I'm thinking the Astros have a pretty strong chance at signing this guy. It's either CC or Sheets for the Astros. I say if they're really thinking about Sheets, why not spend an extra $20 million on Sabathia?

Backe should be erased from the rotation and traded to a team like the Pirates. He's worthless. His ERA was over 6.20 this season. He's got good stuff, but he doesn't have the control he should. So I'm guessing he'll be moved and the rotation will look like this.
Roy Oswalt
CC Sabathia/Ben Sheets
Randy Wolf/another type B starter
Wandy Rodriguez
Felipe Paulino/Fernando Nieve/another prospect will compete for.
