Dallas Morning News: Jon Daniels Q&A

Mike Hindman of the Dallas Morning News recently conducted a Q&A with Rangers GM Jon Daniels.  A few highlights:

  • Daniels thought the Rangers had a great chance to sign Michael Inoa, as ownership made a budget exception to pursue him.
  • Daniels doesn't seem inclined to trade his top pitching prospects for a young big league starter.  He still has certain targets though.
  • A contract extension for Josh Hamilton will probably be explored during the first three months of 2009.
  • Daniels knows what he wants to do with Milton Bradley, but wouldn't reveal it.
  • He expects to exercise Hank Blalock's $6.2MM option for '09.
  • Daniels sees a "good possibility" of making a trade involving one of his four young catchers, but adds that it depends on the market.  Daniels wouldn't be opposed to trading both Gerald Laird and Jarrod Saltalamacchia in separate deals.  He also admitted that the Red Sox inquired about catching.
  • Daniels will attempt to improve the bullpen via free agency this winter.

I fully expect Laird and Salty to be traded. Teagarden is the catcher of the future. I kinda expect the Rangers to bring in an old veteran to back him up, and someone he can learn from. Max Ramirez will toil in AAA.

Anytime any Ranger's rumors are posted I immediately read because this organization has the firepower to light up an offseason. I can't gauge as to whether Daniels will want to make a splash, or continue along the path of slow and steady hoarding of prospects.

With the A's we have already seen the cyclical turn of success run followed by rebuild, but the Rangers strike me as a team that would go for it if the right deal came in place.

If the Rangers were able to acquire frontline proven Major League pitching, I think they should go for it because they have depth in the organization to trade from. Will some of their arms pan out, sure, but distinguishing them is a difficult task. If the Greinke's and Cain's of the world actually become available it is imperative to inquire on them.

Long story short: do Ranger fans think Daniels will make a bold move or stand pat and keep rebuilding?

I think bringing Tek back for two years and letting him groom Salty would be amazing. They could split time and teach him all that he knows.

The Juice:

Daniels is such a clown hard telling what he'll do. I trade both Larid and Salty for Bowden and a similar pitcher, trade Blalock and Byrd for pitching. (Perkins ? T.Robertson ? is Niese untouchable ?)

Make those trades, sign an Ollie Perez; Holland and Feliz will be ready soon- all of a sudden the rotation is sound with a great lineup, and farm system still in place.

Unfortunately, Daniels is incompetent (Michael Schlacht a solid major leaguer LOL LOL LOL) why did the clown reporter even ask about him anyway ?

why would varitek want to become a coach now? there is a need for catching in the league, and he will easily be starting somewhere (i still say with the sox 2/20mil).
regarding the texas catchers (maybe a texas fan can give me more info)...
gerald laird can't hit. at all. i would take varitek's offense over laird's. tek has at least shown he can hit. so why trade anything of value for a 29 year old who can't hit.
i don't know much about saltalamacchia or teagarden, except i can't pronounce either name. salty got a lot of "hype", but from what i hear he can't play defense, and he is being groomed to become a 1st basemen.
teagarden intrigues me, but aren't the rangers grooming him to be their starter?

BBTM,

Yes, Teagarden is the now and future. I don't like Laird but some do- Daniels screwed up by not trading him at the break when he was at .306/.360/.437- he was awful the 2nd half.

Salty will be solid- .352 OBP in 200 ab's. He is only 23 and the way they messed with him- (sent to minors, benched for Laird, then Teagarden, Max Ramirez in and out) he had no chance to succeed.

Boston fans:

Are Buchholz, Bowden, Bard all in play ? Which one(s)for which catcher in return ?

i don't see the rangers trading teagarden, not only because he appears to be the frontrunner for the starting job down the road, but he's also a Texan, which the club loves.

i expect laird to end up in boston actually, probably with another random prospect, to acquire a pitcher. the juice, laird isn't too bad offensively (better than tek at least), so i say its an upgrade in that department. if the rangers can get buchholz (who's also a Texan), i say do it.

as for salty, i see him being traded as well, but i'm not sure where to. what about the yanks? don't know the kind of depth they have at catcher in the farm, but if posada only has a couple of years left behind the plate, it seems like a good investment to me, especially for the rangers, if they can land an ian kennedy (though it might have to involve a couple more players to get done).

also, with all the russell martin speculation now, what if the dodgers were in a deal for a catcher? again, dont know their farm depth, just an inquiry.

lastly, i think its very possible to package one of laird/salty in a bigger deal for a bigger name starter (who could pitch 1 or 2 in the rotation). but who might be on the market?

Well if were Theo Epstein and wanted to improve the Sox behind the plate, then Salty or Ramirez would be my choices. Teagarden will not be available and Laird does not make sense to me since he's almost 30 too and not that much better offensively than Tek.
What can Rangers fans tell about Ramirez? Salty's elbow?

tmoney: I don't think any kind of top of the rotation pitcher will be available (except Peavy) due to the strong FA market of starting pitching this year. I can't see the Red Sox dealing Lester, though Bowden, Masterson and Buchholz or Bard would prob. all be available if the right deal came along...

"I can't see the red sox dealing Lester, though Bowden, Masterson and Buchholz or Bard would prob. all be available if the right deal came along"
-Lester is as untouchable as anyone in baseball, and I seriously doubt they will even consider trading masterson.

-as for the other three they should definitly use them to try and acquire ramirez or salty, as laird is so-so and not exctly young and teagarden not being available

sign tek for 1yr although realistically it'll prob take 2 yrs
