« Catcher Michael Barrett Now Free Agent | Main | Manny Ramirez Notes »
From ESPN's Buster Olney this morning:
Heard this: Arizona executive Jerry DiPoto is among the front-runners to get the Seattle job, and if he does land it, this will increase the likelihood that Pat Gillick winds up serving as some kind of consultant for the Mariners.
DiPoto was reportedly among five candidates interviewed this week; Larry Stone profiled them here. By the way, A's assistant GM David Forst decided not to interview with the Mariners. Forst may end up taking on a larger role with the A's. Phil Rogers crossed Rick Hahn of the White Sox off the list, and Larry LaRue reminded us that Chris Antonetti also passed.

Can anyone explain the DiPotto/Gillick connection? It makes no sense to me.

I was under the impression that they only mentioned Gillick staying on as a consultant because of DiPoto's lack of experience in the role.

Even though Lincoln and Armstrong will pretty much be the primary "cooks" in the kitchen. I really don't think Lincoln/Armstrong give the new GM, regardless of who they are, much power.
And that's just bad news for the Mariners.

Hey guys, I am a Yanks fan and I really hope the Yanks go after Manny Ramirez and make him their full time DH. If that happened it would create a further glut of OF anf DH's. I was wondering who the Yanks might be able to match up with. I know the M's could use a power bat at the OF and DH spots, especially if Ibanez is not resigned. For me the deal is just to move space and get something in return for Matsui. With Kenji and Suzuki on the roster I think Matsui would ok a deal. he had surgery on his knee this off season but should be ready by spring training. He is a free agent in 09 and is going to make 12 million next year. What do you guys think of a deal as such:
Matsui and cash
for two of the 3
OF Michael Wilson (AA)age 25, OF Brent Johnson (AA)age 26 or OF Greg Calman (AA) age 21

The Mariners want to drop payroll, not add.

Greg HALman is probably close to untouchable.
Anyway, why would Matsui ok a deal just because Seattle has Ichiro and Kenji? I'm sure he wouldn't want to go from a contender to the worst team in the AL.
