Jacobs To Royals Fell Through

Change is brewing in the Marlins front office this offseason. Not only have they decided to increase payroll to $30-35MM but also they are actively shopping Mike Jacobs, Scott Olsen, and Kevin Gregg this offseason; so actively, that a deal with Kansas City fell apart last week according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. The deal collapsed, according to Jackson, due to "a medical issue involving a minor-league pitcher" from Kansas City.

If, or when, Jacobs is dealt, the Marlins feel Gaby Sanchez can take over at first, and Olsen's spot in the rotation is expected to be occupied by Andrew Miller.

According to Jackson, a number of clubs have inquired about Dan Uggla but Florida seems to be looking for a far greater return for their All Star second baseman. Other names that could wind up on the block are Jeremy Hermida and Josh Willingham who are both arbitration eligible; however, it doesn't seem likely that the Marlins will move either guy.

Should be a fun ballclub to watch this offseason.

Isn't KC pretty set at first base with Gload, Shealy, and Kila set to battle it out for the job in the Spring? If they were to bring in Jacobs that would further clutter up the situation.

Royals don't make sense for Jacobs.

I'm very interested in seeing where Olson would go. He's a headcase at times, but he's got the stuff to make it. He reminds me of a younger A.J. Burnett.

I could see him on the White Sox, but I don't think we got the stuff to get him.

Olson and Gregg are the 2 perfect candidates that they have (plus hermedia) to shop around since they are dealing with surplus positions and Olson will bring back a catcher if they can make a deal with texa for 1 of the 3 catchers that they have, but I disagree with Jacobs, unless the Marlins think that this past season was a 1 year fluke. Yankees, Cubs and maybe even the Angels if they do not resign Tex could be in need of a power hitting 1B, so maybe that is the reason they are listening to offers, just he was a key hitter in this team last season and would hate to see him leave. Maybe they prefer to trade more than 1 outfielder and move another to 1st base?

Gregg to the Mets still make sense, even Angels could happen.

Aaron-
I agree. Whatwould be the point of this? At least it fell through. Royals have bigger problems then 1b.

i thought trades couldn't be made until after the world series? correct me if i am wrong...

Trading Uggla now wouldn't be smart because Coghlan is still a year away until he can take over at 2nd. I can't see any of those other guys getting a huge return either, so I don't expect another fire sale to occur until next year. At that time, Johnson and Sanchez will be healthy as well and they'll be able to better judge the team.

Trades can be made now, just in bad taste to take away from the World Series and always (except for Boras and A-Rod opting out last year news) is announced after the series ends. There is no rule however.

Jacobs makes zero sense for the Royals.

1. His OBP. The Royals are desperately in need of OBP. Jacobs does zero for that cause.

2. Their logjam at 1B/DH. Unless one of these guys is moving to the OF, which is unlikely. Royals need a middle infield.

I'm guessing that the Royals management just thought there was a serious lack of power on the team, and you have to be fair and admit that Mike Jacobs has power. I don't really consider Ross Gload to be a legitimate option to play first base, and I think Kila would likely get a chance before Shealy. And this is all assuming that Billy Butler is the full time DH.

I feell like the team is pretty set at third, short, center and right. They could play Alberto Callaspo at second, Buck at catcher, Teahen in left, and Kila at first, but that leaves them with a pretty poor lineup. I think they probably go out and add a better bat in left or first, and probably get a veteran to compete at second base.

Except I agree that they don't need a guy like Jacobs who can't get his OBP over .300 because of his batting average, even if he has legitimate 35 HR power. If they could've gotten him on the cheap, then it would have been a good move, but if they had to give up anything of legitimate value then it's not really worth it.

The Marlins are always a fun team to follow during the offseason. Their front office is one of the best in the game if not the most likeable. No doubt they're going to bring in a nice haul for themselves.

This trade makes no sense for the royals. They have a Mike Jacobs type with OBP in Kila.

The only way this makes sense is if Dayton Moore believes that OBP is the devil and causes you to lose ball games. Which apparently he does.

Butler is just a DH. Also he hasn't proven to be a reliable offensive player. Yet.

Kila will not be the Royals opening day first basemen. He was more than outplayed this year in the september call up by Shealy. Shealy is well over .300 and knocked in 21 with 7 bombs. Shealy will take the 1B job out of spring training.
