Latest Peavy Chatter

10:39am: More from Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune.  Peavy has a strong preference for the NL, and wants to play for a winner.  Axelrod mentioned Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and St. Louis as cities that fit for Peavy and his family.  Because of Peavy's willingness to pitch in L.A., the Angels were named as a possibility by Axelrod.

8:27am: Let's catch up on recent Jake Peavy articles.  Dan Hayes of the North County Times wrote about Peavy Monday, quoting Padres GM Kevin Towers saying nothing is imminent.  Hayes talked to several sources who say Peavy prefers to stay in the National League.  The Padres have already approached him with hypothetical trade scenarios (Peavy has to approve any trade).

Regarding that no-trade clause - Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod is on record saying three AL teams could entice his client.  But at the end of the season, Peavy said he wouldn't accept a deal to the ALDavid O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution spoke to someone claiming to be an old friend of Peavy's.  The friend agrees that Peavy wouldn't waive his no-trade clause for an AL team, despite his agent's statement.

The friend gave O'Brien all kinds of info, making the Braves sound like Peavy's top choice.  O'Brien adds that the Braves let Towers know they're interested.  Even if Peavy is picky about his destination, though, there is no reason for Towers to accept a package that does not begin with Jason Heyward or Tommy Hanson.  He has plenty of time to explore possible Peavy trades.

The Cardinals may also be in the mix, according to Buster Olney.  Olney says that one team, "perhaps the Cardinals," is discussing the idea of adding Khalil Greene to a Peavy deal.

Thundersticks, that's more along the lines of what I was getting it in not so many words. A deal of all top tier prospects isn't a fair deal. However, on the other side a deal of lower level and one top tier isn't fair either.

If what is said is true (pitching, pitching and more pitching), then I think Towers would go after 1 ML ready or near ready pitcher (top tier if need be, i.e. Hanson), position player that is ML ready, ML level or near ML ready, then the other prospects would definitely be lower level prospect pitching. Which we do have talent in lower levels pitching wise that are not "lowly minors".

So a package of 4 - 5 players that AREN'T TOP TIER PROSPECTS only nor low minors depending on who's picked would be fair. If the deal was to be centered around one, it'd be Hanson more than likely.

scribbletone

"I think people are really underestimating the cost of Peavy if they think they can get him without giving up one of Heywood, Hanson or Teheran."

I can agree and would be OK with Hanson. However, quite a bit of people are overestimating the cost of Peavy as well. Giving 4 to 5 top tier prospects for Peavy is straight up absurd and that's the insinuation of the cost or so it seems.

I think just one top tier prospect and other valuable players that aren't top tier (prospect wise)and some ML level and/or ML ready players would be fair depending on the players of course.

I have to make your life hard Baleen. I know what you are trying to prove, that Gorky is a good player, which i am sure he is. But here is a comparison that more relevant to this discussion.

Gorkys Hernandez in 1092 Minor League ABs

.288/.348/.403

Cedric Hunter in 1312 minor league ABs

.313/.374/.423

They both play the same position (CF) and they are the same age 20. So thou he may be a very good player, why would the padres need him, its redundant.

If the Braves are the team that trades for Peavy then Hanson is a goner, it's almost a given. When the GM says they want "pitching, pitching, pitching" usually the team that's trading has to give up their top pitching prospect.

I really think Frank Wren will do what he has to to get this done. Mainly because of the fact that alot of FA's want to play for a team that will contend. If the Braves go out and make that kind of trade for Peavy almost right after the WS that will send a very big message that they are serious.

From that point i dont see it being any kind of an issue for them to sign a FA who was worried about being on a competing team EX. Lowe, Garland, Burnett etc..

I think Wren knows this and will therefore go out and make this trade so that he doesnt have to fight as hard for the rest of the FA's he wants.

Can you imagine Peavy and Lowe at the top? that right there takes the rotation to a whole new level whether we sign someone else or not.

1. Peavy
2. Lowe
3. Jair
4. Hampton - We could use a second lefty
5. Campillo/Smoltz/Morton

That would be a nice rotation especially in the NL East. from there we only need a bat. If they stay strong through the first half we get Hudson back in the second half . . .

My Goodness

bkoke, baleen wasn't blowing smoke. DOB did say that. You gotta scroll through it all though.

Oh you're not making my life hard Airman! I was just defending Gorkys, irrelevant to the Peavy discussion.

Teheran... If someone wanted to make him the centerpiece of a trade for real MLB talent, I'd do it in a second. The guy is 17 years old, and hasn't done anything in pro ball.

The odds of him staying healthy and progressing to the Bigs are astronomical.

drumzalicious I would love to see that roation! Thats like a fantasy baseball rotation.

In addition there is the defense, which is very close to the same for both players

Gorky: (Numbers for CF)
Fielding Percentage: .980
Range Factor: 2.52

Cedric:
Fielding Percentage: .983
Range Factor: 2.50

If the Cards do work out a Peavy deal that includes K. Greene (which would be seen as a salary dump) would it cost as many players?

If the Braves make the trade to get Peavy, I really don't think go out and sign Lowe or Burnett or CC or Sheets. I think they go after someone less expensive like Garland, or even Randy Wolf if he doesn't sign with the Astros.

"And when I ran it by someone who probably has a very good idea bout it, it was not shot down."

this does not mean a deal is in the works nor does it mean a deal has even been discussed. it means the braves would possibly consider it. nothing more

"Do the Brewers still have prospects to deal after the CC trade?"

Absolutely... The Brewers could put together a very competitive package around Gamel or Jeffress.

Let me throw my hat into the ring with a Peavy for Stetter, Brad Nelson and Tony Gwynn Jr.

The Brewers get 5 years of an expensive injury prone pitcher, and in return the Padres get some rotation depth, a Hard hitting first baseman that looks like a manatee and Tony Gwynn's son.

I think a trade for Peavy and sign Lowe would tremendously help our pitching. All we would need is a good consistent power bat in OF, rebound from Francoeur and we would be set.

However, a more realistic possibility of a Garland/Wolf/ect.... wouldn't be bad either, cause those type of pitchers tend to be durable and eat innings. That would compliment Peavy and Jurrjens.

I think Derek Lowe's price tag will surprise a lot of people (more expensive than sheets?)

i just laughed out loud at the brewers fan offer

I would imagine that, at this point, quite a few names are being thrown around. Something like:

KT: We would like Escobar & Hanson to start.

FW: I don't think so. Maybe Escober & Parra or Hanson & Lillibridge.

KT: How about Escobar, Morton & Sammons?

FW: Let me think about it....

I think if we don't get Peavy, then Lowe might be our next best option. The problem with him is Boras. I wouldn't touch Burnett with a 10-foot pole. We've got enough DL players. Ditto for Sheets, unless its a one-year deal (yeah, right).

Just another reason I believe Wren will get this trade completed.

Hopefully because you can infer sarcasm...

you're absolutely right bkoke. Take that information, and the fact that the Braves have contacted Towers to let them know they are interested, and draw your own conclusions.

Personally, I don't want Khalil Greene and I don't want to give up Escobar unless it's a deal breaker. If the Padres want a package based mostly on pitching then it's going to take Hanson or Teheran, plus a whole lot more.

I also wouldn't rule out an under-the-radar type trade for another SP. One where we go "I didn't know THAT guy was available!!!"

Then I think we need to sign Dunn or Abreu for LF.

Thundersticks...if Frank Wren said let me think about it to that deal I would literally attack him physically. That would be the coup to end all coups. I would drive all three players to the airport; no, screw that. Me, Yesco, Charlie and Clint would roadtrip to San Diego.

baleen - That was meant to be the starting point. There would be other prospects involved, obviously. My point was that just about everyone on the Braves roster is going to mentioned somehow.

Let me repeat - by no means am I suggesting it would only cost Escobar, Morton and Sammons to get Peavy!!!

lol ok sorry! but I don't think Sammons holds much value at all in a trade.

Just musing out of thin air: If a package had to be ALL pitching I'd do Hanson, Morton, Rohrbough, Medlen or Heath and Diamond or Locke. It's a lot...but is it enough?

Wow this thread blew up while I was away! :D

bobo, back to my points.

1. Is Heyward MLB ready?

Not right now no but as point 2 says, we may not win with Peavy next year anyhow. We can't count on Hampton, Smoltz or Glavine and Huddy wont be back till midseason at best. That means Jurrjens is our current ace, even if we add Peavy we are really struggling to piece together a rotation. Would Peavy be great? YES! Would he put us in the playoffs in our current state? Probaly not. If the Braves situation was different I could see paying more (adding Heyward in one way or another) but the payoff just might not be there so I'd rather not mortgage the future yet again to finish 3rd and 4th in our division.

2. Good point about not being able to win next year.

I wish it weren't true, believe me. :(

3. Prospects are valuable, but not THAT valuable. If someone would pay the Braves $70M for Heyward, they'd just on it in a second. Trading him for Peavy is the equivalent.

No matter how good a prospect looks, you have to look at the possible outcomes. And "MLB average" is the most likely. Heyward is very valuable - just not worth $70M. A best guess? Maybe $30M.

Let's take Longoria, is his production (.900ish OPS) at 5 mill total over 4 years (400k + 500k + 1 mill + 3 mill) worth more than Peavy's pitching at 53 mill over 4 years? This anaology obviously has flaws, I quickly guess pre arb salary plus the first year of arm for Longoria, we are comparing a hitter to a pitcher and Heyward isn't Longoria but he will be a top prospect as Longoria was. Point is the Braves have 50 extra mill to throw at another pitcher over that same time period plus they keep the additional prospects it would take to land Peavy because they aren't going to do it 1 for 1. I certainly understand a prospet doesn't equal a MLB star but when you look at the Braves situation now, their situation in 2 years and weigh just how valuable getting a bat with that type of potential at less than a mill per season over their first 4 seasons and it's awfully hard to give up Heyward in a deal like this.

I still say start with Hanson/Schafer/Lillibridge and see where we are at. I believe it will take one or two more players (if it's two then they aren't going to be that great) but I think it's a good start. If the Braves deal Heyward in the deals passed around here today, we wont win our division once while Peavy is here without some serious roster management by Wren who hasn't overly impressed me to date thus far.

If the Cards got Greene in the Peavy deal, it could be the infield bat they need. Then they can add more pitching, mostly in bullpen.

Why do all the Braves fans think Peavy is all but locked up?

not to rag on your minor league system cardinals fans but its not that good. You Rasmus and not much else. Anderson isn't bad but he's not elite. and nobody wants one of your outfielders either, except ludwick.

I think the Dodgers loosing will increase the chances of Lowe leaving. If they had won the World Series it would have been tough for him to bounce ship.

Lowe left the Redsox after a title didn't he?

Also, everywhere one reads Lowe being the under the radar signing... I don't think he will represent value at all given that GMs would know what he offers. People seem to think that Sabathia, Sheets and Burnett will get the big money and Lowe will be taking change...

Tier One: Sabathia
Tier Two: Sheets, Lowe Burnett.

I would be not that surprised if Lowe gets the second highest average dollar value on his contract this year. He doesn't have the durability concerns of Sheets and Burnett.

I disagree with the thoughts that the braves cant win next year.

There were alot of games we should have won especially early on where our pitchers did fine but our offense wasnt clicking. mainly being that Tex wasnt hitting hardly at all the first two months and it was basically Chipper carrying the offense. Once you put a more consistent hitter than Tex behind Chipper it will help everyone relax at the plate more. We have a true lead off hitter in Anderson, all though he isnt the most powerful hitter he still gets on base. After that your golden.

1. Anderson
2. Escobar
3. Chipper
4. Consistent Power Bat
5. Mac
6. Frenchy
7. Kotchman
8. Johnson

Thats a decent lineup granted Franceour gets back on track.

After that you have your pitching solved with

1. Peavy
2. Lowe
3. JJ
4. Hampton
5. someone else

We resign Ohman to keep some kind of quality in our bullpen

That gives you
Gonzalez LHP/CL
Soriano RHP/CL
Moylan RHP
Ohman LHP
Acosta RHP

Fire the rest lol. i wouldnt mind seeing Wren get some bullpen help now that i got to that part lol

Personally as a Braves fan Id be just fine not pursuing Peavy. It's obviously gonna take a rather large package in order to get him from the Padres, something I dont think the Braves need to do. Id much rather try to sign both Burnett and Lowe. At the very least Burnett. We have money to spend this offseason, so why go out dealing away our farm system when we can accomplish our needs with the extra cash we have to sign people.

What about a deal centered around Teheran and Hernandez? Two prospects with TONS of upside and potential. Then package Lillibridge and Jones with that and to top it off, throw in a lower level pitching arm like Locke, Rohrbough, Medlen or Marek.

Now, you can't tell that that isn't a legit offer and one hell of a haul of talent.

drumzalicious, your first mistake is penciling Hampton in the 3rd spot! :p

Seriously though, you are grasping at straws there. The Phillies will have most of their team back as will the Mets. McCann can't play every day, Chipper can't play every day, that lineup would have very little power and our ball club doesn't run well. I'm not saying it can't happen but it's unlikely I think even if we get Peavy and certainly not a lock if we got Lowe and some power bat as you suggest.

Best case scenario is I suppose Anderson has a .400 OBP in the leadoff spot, Chipper plays 120 games, McCann stays healthy, Frenchy bounces back, KJ breaks out and we can sign the people you suggest. If that were to happen, maybe we have a shot but banking on best case scenario could likely land Wren in some hot water in my opinion.

...and that isn't even getting into he pitching. There are just to many question marks to pull another deal similar to the Tex deal and this will likely cost more than that. :(

A few bits from XX sports radio interview with Barry Axlerod (Peavy's agent):

1. The Padres are making it known that they would be interested in making a deal if the terms are right. They are not just sitting around doing nothing. It is more active than just fielding phone calls.

2.Peavy and Axelrod talked about the teams where he would be willing to go in generalities. They won't go much beyond that until specifics arise. It would take something pretty enticing to get Peavy to switch to the American League.

3.It's only a possibility until it really happens. It would appear this trade will entail more than one guy. It becomes more probable as teams become more aggressive to get it done.

There you have it, the Padres are aggressively shopping him, and it looks like it will be to a national league team.

Jake's response to Kevin Towers seeking response on trade possibilities:
"If that's what you think is going to make the team better, if that's the direction you are going, if you think you will be in a 3-5 year rebuilding plan, then I will consider anything that you think will help the club."

So there is the time line for the rebuild. I think that should mean are not looking for ML players, but prospects close to playing or within 2-3 years off.

not to rag on your minor league system cardinals fans but its not that good. You Rasmus and not much else. Anderson isn't bad but he's not elite. and nobody wants one of your outfielders either, except ludwick.

It's ok for anyone to rag on the Card's farm system. I agree its not too pretty. Maybe in a few years it will look a little better with Kozma, Wallace, Freese, and some others moving up but until then, the barn will have one stud (Rasmus) and a few more out in the pasture.

As far as Peavy goes, while I'd love to see him in Cardinal red, I don't see it happening. The trade would destroy what little we have in the minor league. Although Peavy would be worth the trade at the moment, there is no telling down the road (in walks Mulder).

If I were John Moz, I'd probably look at Lowe and find a way to trade Pineiro while resigning Looper.
