Sheets Done As A Brewer?

Some have suggested Ben Sheets' recent elbow injury increases his chances of re-signing with the Brewers, as it may lower his price.  Beat writer Tom Haudricourt, however, says he will probably be allowed to leave via free agency.  The pitcher won't rule out a return, but Haudricourt said "Sheets' red eyes and solemn words told the story."

My guess is that Sheets will look more and more appealing as the offseason progresses and the other big names fall off the board.  The numbers are good, and he made 30+ starts for the first time since '04.  Sheets has a muscle tear near the elbow, but will that prevent him from getting a four-year offer?

If CC goes elsewhere Sheets will be back in a Brewers uni.

sheets has packed his bags and said his goodbyes and you wont see him in a brewers uniform anytime soon. I wish him the best of luck though, he was the shining star of those awful brewer teams for the last 8 years. Attanasio is going to sign CC, i have a pretty good feeling.

I know that the Jays GM JP Ricciardi really likes Ben Sheets. If he were willing to take a 1 year $14 million contract he'd be a great gamble, but unless he gets an incentive-laden multiyear deal (like Mark Mulder) he is a poor risk. Hopefully the intrigue of pitching behind Roy Halladay entices Sheets to come to Canada...

Sheet is going to be a huge gamble, this year was his first full season since 04 and he still got injured. They really need to let him walk, get the two draft picks, and sign CC.

They need to let Sheets go; he's very injury-prone and will still command a good amount of money this off season, not nearly the amount CC will get, but he's going to get a lot. If I were the Brewers, I'd make my best offer to CC and if he doesn't accept, say screw it and take the 2 picks from him and 2? or 1 from Sheets. I wouldn't even call Sheets' agent to talk at all.

While I love to see players stick with their orginal teams it would be a mistake for the Brewers to invest the kind of money Sheets will want with his injury history.

It would totally destroy the Brewers if they signed him for 3-4 more years. He'll probably ask for 15-18m/yr. That'd be horrid for Brewer fans to even think about.

If I were Omar Minaya, I'd offer Sheets a 5/55 deal. Maybe 5 years and 60 mil. He's so incredibly talented, if he could throw even 150 or so innings for the 09 Mets, he'd give the team a tremendous lift. He's always a gamble, but you know you have an excellent shot to win when he is on the mound.

Since Sheets is a Type A free agent and now has this injury concern, I wonder if a team like the Yankees would be hesitant to sign him considering he is not only an injury risk but would also cost their first round pick. I wonder if there is any chance at all that Sheets accepts arbitration from the Brewers...

Of course, the braves are the wild card with any pitcher this offseason, but i want them to remain a dormant wild card on sheets. It makes no sense for the braves to give him a deal that he will be looking for, and the braves know more than any organization how much it sucks when you gamble wrong on signing a pitcher. The braves need to focus on Ryan Dempster, and if they cannot lull him to the braves, then pursue a trade and sign Lowe or Garland. The braves want a young front liner to compliment Jurrjens, I think the best way will wind up being the trade market, as we do hve the pieces to get a young pitcher who might become availiable.

I could see Sheets accepting Arb. Just to make sure he gets his best payday when he is healthy. And a 1 year $14 mil deal through arb won't hurt his pocket.

Tim, are you kidding?

Who gives a guy a four year deal when he already HAS a muscle tear in his elbow and ended the season unable to pitch?

That's the recipe for a one year deal with an option. Nobody sinks $40M-$60M into a guy that could easily have to have Tommy John surgery and miss 1-2 years of the deal.

Ben Sheets will be pitching next to Roy Oswalt next year.

If the Burnett rumors are true he will be looking for 4/60 (or something close to that).

Burnett has pitched about 10% more innings than Sheets over the past 3 years. Sheets has a better ERA while Burnett played in a tougher division.

Burnett is coming off his healthiest season in awhile but still managed to post a 4+ ERA.

Sheets is coming off his healthiest season in awhile but was injured the last few weeks of the season. He managed to post an ERA a tick above 3.

Burnett is 1.5 years older than Sheets.

Going back to the top - if Burnett is going to land a contract north of 4/60 there is no way Sheets takes a 1/14 deal, unless he is seriously hurt.

I hope Kenny Williams makes an attempt to sign Sheets or Sabathia, considering on the post before this one he's reportedly open to "All" teams now

I agree with West Coast bias....

The stros have the need for a frontline starter, have the owner in Drayton McClain who will make the big questionable splash to get a player he wants, and has the gm in Ed Wade who will give sheets the years and dollars he wants just go against the grain and say he made a move towards having a winning team.

The thing is Sheets has a large rap sheet as far as injuries go, and he's injured right now. It would take a pretty dim witted GM to give him big money + long years, and that GM would have to really need starting pitchers. So, who fits that scenario?

Someone go wake up Ed Wade, he needs to get busy on this.

The answer is a resounding Y-E-S.

"Who gives a guy a four year deal when he already HAS a muscle tear in his elbow and ended the season unable to pitch?"

It is a great thing that he cost so much money because that is exactly the type of thing the Pirates would do haha.

In this day and age someone will give him the 4 year deal at 14-16 per because some teams just have the money to throw around and/or their GM is an idiot. If Andruw Jones can get a 18MM/yr deal after basiclly taking a season off Sheets should easily get his.

B. Sheets to yanks 09

God, no. Five years for Ben Sheets? Yes he is effective on the mound, when he actually makes it there. Sheets is a walking time bomb at this point - even in one of his longest seasons in quite some time this year he was hurt when the chips were down for the Brewers. It is a shame that he has this muscle tear problem with a big contract supposed to be coming, but it's fitting considering his injury history. The deal would have to fairly incentive-laden at this point for Sheets to get the money he wants, which I know some stupid GM will give him anyway.
