Jake Peavy Rumors

4:27pm: Peavy would need "a lot of convincing" to approve a trade to any AL team, according to his agent.

3:25pm: The Astros haven't inquired on Peavy recently, but Peavy would definitely waive his no-trade clause to play for Houston.  In fact, it might be his top choice.  Astros GM Ed Wade did ask about Peavy in July.

3:06pm: Buster Olney has more.  Peavy has indicated interest only in the five previously mentioned NL teams.  Olney says Peavy has not given any indication that he'd accept a deal to the Yankees or any other AL team.  Still, the Padres will gauge interest from American League teams because talks with NL clubs aren't close.  Olney says the Yanks have discussed Peavy internally but doesn't say whether Brian Cashman has discussed it with Kevin Towers.

10:03am: According to Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger, the Yankees have had preliminary discussions with the Padres about Jake Peavy (hat tip to River Ave. Blues).  Peavy was apparently a hot topic at the Yankees' organizational meetings.  Peavy's agent hinted he might accept a trade to the Yankees, but he does prefer the NL.

Peavy's preferred cities are Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and St. Louis.  Despite that, Graziano says the Mets have interest.  The Padres are aggressively shopping Peavy, seeking two young pitchers and a near MLB-ready center fielder.

The only reason I hate the Mets is because of their fans.

"Jeff Samardizja, Angel Guzman, Sean Marshall.. maybe Rich Hill, if he can get his head screwed on right..."

Angel Guzman? The same Angel Guzman who is 27 years old, has shown little to nothing ( 0-7 6.00 era)in the short time in the majors, and the one who is coming of TJ surgery? Oh boy, why not throw in Kevin Hart.

Sean Marshall? 26 year old soft tossing lefty who also has done little ( 16-22 4.62 era), cant crack the rotation and is destined to be a middle reliever. ALl this for a Cy Young candidate, yeah...sure...ok buddy.

Rich Hill? Oh boy, you are really scraping the bottom of the barrel. 29 year old head case who cant throw a strike, was absolute garbage prior to the '07 season, and a guy Lou wants absolutely nothing to do with. Combine this pile of crap togehter and they still arent better than the potential of one Hughes. The only one worth anything is Samardzjia and he is likely destined to be a set up man, not what SD is looking for. They want major league ready STARTING pitching.

"not by digging all the way back to Brooks Keischnick and thinking that his failure somehow has relevance to Pie's career."

It is TOTALLY relevant. Pie, (like Kieshnick and Patterson, Choi) is an overhyped product of the cubs media machine. The same cubs media machine that was selling Fukudome as a cross between Hideki and Ichiro. LMAO, you bought that one cubs fans, even when scouts and coaches who had seen him ( i.e Trey Hillman) were saying hes not anywhere even close to Ichiro and Hideki and more comparable to Iwamura.

dudetheplayer, I'd probably do that deal if it got me Peavy. I hope we can keep Rohrbough and instead put in 2 players (Jones/Reyes?) and get it done. Jones could play next year and Schafer could be ready next year, Reyes could start the year in their rotation, Lillibridge could give them the ability to trade Greene. It's 2 SP (one of which is a top 25 spect), a soon to be MLB ready CF and 2 other players that are MLB ready. 3 of those 5 pieces could be on their active roster next season and in return, we get one of the top 3 SP in the NL locked up for 5 years under market value. If we don't have to give up Heyward and it isn't ridiculous, I'd take it but I wouldn't give up Heyward because I, like you, feel 2009 will be much like 2007 and 2008 unfortunately. I think it's as good a package as anyone else can muster up or would be willing to muster up and we happen to be on his short list of 5 possible destinations (rumored in the top 2).

dudetheplayer,
The trade is pretty fair but I think that we would only need to include one of Hanson or Schafer, since Heyward isnt going no where. Hanson, Rohrbough, Prado, Lillibridge would probably do it. That lineup looks good but I would think Burrell would be the clenup man and BMac 5 stick. Getting Moylan and Soriano back and maybe Smoltz and this team is looking SHARP.

Showtime35, so far we know that the Padres want 2 SP and a MLB ready CF. So far we know Peavy wants to stay in the NL with his top 2 choices being Hou/Atl and then the other 3 being Chi, LA and StL. If Schafer isn't in there than Gorkys will have to be but that still doesn't fit what they said and that is they want a MLB ready CF. Prado/Lillibridge isn't gonna get it done. Why would they take utility infielder types instead of the CF'er they are asking for? You need to meet their needs first before you can start rounding out the deal and it starts with Hanson/Schafer I think, the other 2-3 pieces aren't as important. The deal you proposed there isn't as good as other teams have gotten for pitchers who aren't as valuable when contract situations are thrown into the equation. It's possible the Padres wont even do the deal without Heyward in it, how are we going to get them to take it without Schafer in it either?

Lakersdodgersfans,

My.freaking.god. What world are you living in?

The Dodgers are not the Yankees. The Dodgers cannot sign Manny who will want at LEAST 17mil. a year, Furcal who will probably get 9+mil in this market, AND CC (Could cost around 22 mil+) and THEN after all of this add Jake Peavy. You have arbitration cases for Ethier, Martin and Broxton who the Dodgers will want to lock up. Dear god...that might be the worst "team" prediction I've seen so far.

It's not likely that the Cubs aquire Peavy, but stranger things have happened. Example Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton.

You can't count the Cubs as a front runner, but you can't completely count them out. Remember Rich Harden???

they easily could if the managment wanted to. kent, nomar, penny, lowe, and furcal=about 57m coming off. lets say manny gets 18m, cc gets 22m= 40m. furcal will get around 10-11m=50m. i belive peavys first yr is 8m, so payroll is up 1m for these four players. i know wat ur saying if u ever watch a dodger game, we still have 2b/3b open. im guessing blake wants asimilar contract, 6-7m a yr. if they include dewitt in the trade instead of hu, then no 2b needed, use dewitt. if not they need to get a 2b. i know they have arb. raises to important players, but they could sign the vets while raiseing payroll 8m. THE DODGERS PLAY IN LOS ANGELES. NO MADDER HOW MANY PEOPLE DON'T BELEIVE IT, WE ARE A BIG MARKET TEAM. besides, in 2 monts, manny sold 7m in merchandise. in a way, he prob will pay for his contract. then cc, i dont know the stats from the brew crew, but u know he sold a crap-load of merchandise, so add cc to the list of prob paying half his contract(cause its so large). peavy only makes 8 or 9m this yr. if u live in la, u know the money here, so not only would HIS sles help the contract, but think of tickets if for the next 4yrs you can say you will have furcal, martin, cc, peavy, and broxton as your core! THE DODGERS CAN EAISLY AFFORD THIS, ITS IN MCCOURTS COURT NOW

lakerdodgersyankees4live, all merchandise revenue is run by MLB and is evenly distributed to all 30 teams. So say Dodgers merchandise increased by $30 million, Dodgers would only receive $1 million of it. You can even check for yourself, check for a label on any of your Dodger merchandise and look at the copyright message does it have a MLB logo or a Dodger logo.

i'm still waiting for him to bring up the Lou Brock trade as a reason Jim Hendry shouldn't get an extension. anyways, i swear there's more Cubs haters out there than Yankee haters sometimes.. listening to this guy you'd think the Cubs were the only organization to ever have prospects not live up to their potential. if Forlife61 had his way, i'm sure all rookies who didn't win ROY would be banned for baseball for life just so he didn't have to read about them.

and yes, people do seem to have forgotten all too quickly that the Cubs got Harden for Sean Gallagher and a bunch of spare parts. and Aramis Ramirez to swallow Lofton's salary. they obviously have no idea what their doing in the front office, do they?
