5:01pm: Scott Miller of CBSSports.com says the Rockies are prepared to turn around and trade Street to another team.
4:08pm: Gonzalez confirmed his inclusion in the trade in a phone call to Jorge L. Ortiz of USA Today.
3:42pm: A Rockies spokesman told the AP that talks are fluid, and "everything's speculation." Heyman is now aboard with Gonzalez/Smith/Street as the package. Seems solid for one year of Holliday and the accompanying draft picks.
3:20pm: Susan Slusser spoke to Smith, who is flying to Denver for a physical. She agrees that Street and Gonzalez are the other two players.
2:54pm: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick confirmed Smith is in the deal.
2:39pm: Troy Renck says the A's had been offering Street and Gonzalez. Meanwhile ESPN adds Ryan Sweeney and Gonzalez to their mix of players discussed.
2:30pm: Brown says the two teams have agreed in principle to a deal that will send Gonzalez, Smith, and Street to the Rockies.
2:24pm: The ESPN report now says Brett Anderson was under discussion as well as Smith.
2:03pm: The ESPN guys talked to A's assistant GM David Forst, who said, "It's still an ongoing discussion."
2:00pm: Ken Rosenthal chimes in. The deal may not be finalized for about 48 hours. Players discussed over the weekend: Carlos Gonzalez, Huston Street, and Smith. Rosenthal says the A's do not plan to flip Holliday or trade him in July. Rosenthal also says the A's could increase payroll to as high as $80MM, which could mean $25-30MM to play with.
1:57pm: ESPN's Buster Olney and Jerry Crasnick say the two teams have agreed to terms, and believe pitcher Greg Smith was under discussion.
1:51pm: Yahoo's Tim Brown also says a deal is close.
1:27pm: According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the A's traded for Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday. More as it comes in!

"Love how Angels fans are sweating this deal...the AL West is now Oaklands to lose if they didnt give up any of their top 5 prospects.
The Angels were an 88 win team last year, the A's 76, their luck was just huge and it showed come playoff time."
You seem to have missed the Angels series. They ran into a white hot Jon Lester and Ervin Santana was uncharacteristically shelled. You remove those two factors and the Angels, not the Red Sox, win that series.
Anyway, for all your talk of "luck" the Angels would have still beaten your hapless A's by 12 games if Pythag was any good at predicting the success of teams that play a small ball heavy style.
"AA hates the A's and is sweating this."
The A's are low on my "hated teams" totem pole. The Giants, Yankees, Mariners, Padres and Rangers all trump the A's for various reasons. Anyway, I am not sweating this deal. I don't even think the Coors Field Matt Holliday is good enough to fix the mess that is the Oakland A's and I am very interested to see just how good a player Holliday is outside of Coors.
Posted by: AA | November 10, 2008 at 02:17 PM
"Rosenthal already wrote that the A's don't plan to flip Holliday."
Could Beane/Forst really say anything other than that?
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 10, 2008 at 02:17 PM
Bobo...I agree Holliday's overrated, but he's still an above average ballplayer. Ludwick on the other hand needs to show me more than one year of success at age 30. I rather have a package of decent young prospects and a trading chip like Sheets or Duscherer than just one average outfielder.
Posted by: jvg019 | November 10, 2008 at 02:17 PM
Should be an interesting offseason for those of us that like watching beane make moves. Why does everyone think he is going to make a move this bold and early and then sit back and do nothing else? Its a gamble for sure but there are legitimate reasons to think they can contend going into next year.
Posted by: walkoffblast | November 10, 2008 at 02:17 PM
no cause now he can try 2 cash in on Tex and Manny...and we all know Boras will work his magic in the Holliday deal
Posted by: JasonV | November 10, 2008 at 02:18 PM
You do realize that the AL West is a wide open division for 2009, right? There is no favorite.
Not true AT ALL. Angels are the far superior team there, with or without Teixera. They have one of the best pitching staffs in the majors and not a bad hitting team. No other team in the west has any pitching.
Posted by: Spieg7 | November 10, 2008 at 02:20 PM
This deal makes sense to me if it is Street, Gonzales and Smith. Gonzales had a half a season in the majors and I am assuming they did not like what they saw, Smith is a fringe big league starter and Street is not in the long term plans.
Having seen Holliday play quite a bit outside of Coors, I think his bat will play anywhere. The hr numbers are just a portion of what makes him a good hitter, he is more Pujols than Dunn as far as hitting is concerned.
Posted by: cwilli | November 10, 2008 at 02:20 PM
Like others, I did not see it coming.
Posted by: studio179 | November 10, 2008 at 02:20 PM
"Could Beane/Forst really say anything other than that?"
We don't know that Beane/Forst are Rosenthal's sources, and if they are they could easily decline comment on that question.

"if Pythag was any good at predicting the success of teams that play a small ball heavy style."
Ha. I won't even go there.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 10, 2008 at 02:22 PM
I see Holliday with something like this in Oakland:
.300/.380/.480 (OPS of .860 or so).
25 HR, 90 RBI
Basically something like his average road stats for the past 3 years.
Posted by: bobo | November 10, 2008 at 02:22 PM
"the mess that is the Oakland A's"
rofl, yeah 2nd best farm system in mlb makes them a mess and you sure arent sweating this hahaha
Back to the A's from a non-hater perspective, if Furcal and Giambi are added are they WS contenders? They would easily destroy the AL West and the new Big 3 (Anderson-Chaill-Simmons) all project to be hitting the bigs by 09 and 10, if they add all these known bats are they frontrunners as early as 09?
Posted by: Athletic Domination | November 10, 2008 at 02:22 PM
Talk about uneducated people.
First, if the Angels lose Tex AND K-Rod AND have no replacements via FA or a trade consider the following:
K-Rod blew 7 saves out his 69. How many more saves will Arredondo blow? I don't know - maybe 3 or 4? Go ahead - subtract out those wins and come back down to 96.
Second, Tex was with the Angels for TWO MONTHS. He racked up 60+% of his AB's in the NL. While Tex made the club better this was still a club on pace for 95+ wins without him.
Finally, the Angels are NOT old. They are under 30 at C, 1B, 2B, SS, and 3B. Depending on who they go with in LF you can probably add that in as well. The rotation consists of all guys that are 30 or under. Oh, and don't forget that the Angels were decimated by injuries - injuries that would rival what ANY club saw last year.
As an Angels fan I can honestly say that I am not sweating this move. The A's have a chance to be real good, but they are a few years away from being serious threats.
Posted by: bjsguess | November 10, 2008 at 02:22 PM
I am going to nominate this trade already as this year's best "did not see it coming" trade. Even thoug some reports had linked the A's with Holliday, this is still pretty crazy. I know what's throwing me off is how he was, apparently, so close to becoming a STL Cardinal and now the very next day it sounds like he is going to a completely different team.
Posted by: JP | November 10, 2008 at 02:22 PM
unless the A's build a team around him, they will stay just about where they are, maybe finish in second but i dont see them winning the division, or the wild card since there are lots of other better teams to fight for that still
Posted by: 04Forever | November 10, 2008 at 02:22 PM
Athletic Domination-
ESPN mentioned Brett Anderson as possibly being discussed.
I will hate this deal if he is in the deal.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 10, 2008 at 02:24 PM
i'm guessing beane will let him walk after the season and get the draft picks. i'm not all that familiar with the a's, but do they have any other Type A FA's coming off the books after '09? maybe beane really likes what next year's draft looks like...
or maybe they spend big this winter and try to contend? didn't rosenthal write an article about how they have all kinds of money to spend?
Posted by: 100backeduptrucks | November 10, 2008 at 02:24 PM
No other team in the west has any pitching.
2008 Team ERAs
LAA-3.99
OAK-4.01
Oh I see what you mean. That .02 era difference is huge.
Posted by: defense | November 10, 2008 at 02:25 PM
It seems that the A's stay pretty low on payroll alot of the time, so I would think that Billy Beane would have the $ to retain Holliday.
Posted by: JP | November 10, 2008 at 02:25 PM

What I'm saying is your team outplayed what they should have won. While you still WON 100 games (no one is knocking that) you just can't expect the same future number of wins out of those same players. Unless someone is going to get much better (Kendrick/Wood/Rodriguez come to mind), you're looking at 87-88 wins out of the current club as it stands going into the season.

I love how Angel fans are saying how much better pitching they have, yet their entire team ERA last year was only .02 lower than Oakland's. Please realize that
Posted by: defense | November 10, 2008 at 02:27 PM
Spieg7 = thats some jaw dropping ignorance and homerish posting there. Lackey is the only true stud SP they have and the A's have a better relief options already.
The Angels are not that good a team! Only Angels fans think they are as good as their inflated W-L was last year.

Hurry up and tell me who's in the deal.
I can live with Street/CarGon/Smith, but Anderson is downright stupid.
Although I'd rather not give up CarGon and give up a corner OF instead.

While that is true, the Angels had Kotchman at first before that. MOrales isn't going to be better next year than Kotchman or Tex'. Young players just don't come to the majors and dominate. It takes a couple years to become good MLB'ers
Posted by: defense | November 10, 2008 at 02:30 PM
If Brett Anderson is involved, at all, I HATE this deal. Anderson is the A's best pitching prospect IMO and shouldn't be traded for a one year rental. Again, if Anderson or Gonzalez are a part of the deal Beane must plan on extending Holliday. Beane is a smart GM, and will not mortgage the future for a one year rental. I will be shocked if either Gonzalez or Anderson are involved in this deal.
Posted by: jpshark | November 10, 2008 at 02:30 PM
melonis - yeah Im going to be very disappointed if Cargo, Anderson or Cahill is in this deal. Im fine with losing anyone else. The only way Im cool with losing those specific dudes is if Ian Stewarts name gets added to the deal somehow.
Remember how bad Beane ripped of the Rockies in the Dye deal though? He's housed them before lets hope he does it again :)
Posted by: Athletic Domination | November 10, 2008 at 02:30 PM
I could see this thing being more then just Holliday coming to Oakland. If Gonzalez or Anderson are involved i'm thinking Ian Stewart is on his way in.

jpshark + Athletic Domination-
Every report I've seen is saying Cargo/Smith/Street.
Please Beane, get Cargo out and give up a corner OF. I'm very weary of Cunningham's ability to play CF. The Rox don't need a CF anyways, they have Dexter Fowler.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 10, 2008 at 02:32 PM
jpshark, there is no way the Rox give up Stewart. He is their long-term, cheap 3B for years to come. If he continues to play like he is capable of, then I see him with the Rox for a very long time.
Posted by: JP | November 10, 2008 at 02:33 PM
"Albert Pujols and Geovanny Soto disagree with you."
Do you understand that the Chamberlains, Pujols', Longoria's, and the others are the exception to the rule? The majority of players don't come up here and dominate, and expecting Morales to duplicate his minor league numbers would be as stupid of a move as the Yankees did with Hughes/Kennedy when they expected them to duplicate their minor league numbers in 2008.
Posted by: defense | November 10, 2008 at 02:34 PM
"Albert Pujols and Geovanny Soto disagree with you."
very very very very large exceptions to the rule though
Posted by: 04Forever | November 10, 2008 at 02:34 PM
Street, Smith and Gonzalez!!!! Rockies are robbing them blind.
Posted by: Showtime35 | November 10, 2008 at 02:34 PM
Yes, they are large exceptions, but, there are exceptions... And Morales' stats say he has a chance at being one of those exceptions...
Posted by: baseballismylyf4 | November 10, 2008 at 02:38 PM
Well i'm not a fan of this deal unless Stewart is packing his bags as well. Depth for depth as far as prospects go, if not this deal sucks.
Posted by: jpshark | November 10, 2008 at 02:38 PM
"Street, Smith and Gonzalez!!!! Rockies are robbing them blind."
I hate the idea of Gonzalez being in the deal. But, better him than Cunningham. I'd prefer Sweeney or Buck going though.
Smith is a ticking timebomb. He does not have the "stuff", and his control does not compensate. He is one of two pitchers in the entire league who was able to put up an ERA under 4.5 while maintaining a K/BB under 1.5 (and its a VERY rare feat to repeat) (and I think one of 3-4 who were able to keep their ERA under 5). He is a product of the A's lovely pitcher's park and top-notch defense.
Street is going to get expensive. And, he's a closer.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 10, 2008 at 02:38 PM
Hey melonis, what if Furcal and Giambi get on board too? Trade Barton+Crosby for an innings eater and all of a sudden the A's jump to forefront of the AL.
Anderson 09 = Hudson 99.
Posted by: Athletic Domination | November 10, 2008 at 02:39 PM
Depends. Street may not be the Huston Street the Rox think they are getting. Plus, they have Joey Devine's SICK numbers to replace Street for pocket change.
this deal makes plenty of sense for Oakland, both baseball and business-wise, particularly while the Giants look to be horrible for years to come.
Posted by: Mattyc44 | November 10, 2008 at 02:39 PM
"I love how Angel fans are saying how much better pitching they have, yet their entire team ERA last year was only .02 lower than Oakland's. Please realize that"
A's ERA
1st Half: 3.39
2nd Half: 4.93
There starting pitching was terrible in the second half to the tune of a 5.82 era. I am not a fan of either team, but the Angels pitching staff is way better than the A's.
Posted by: cwilli | November 10, 2008 at 02:40 PM
"Remember how bad Beane ripped of the Rockies in the Dye deal though? He's housed them before lets hope he does it again :)"
The only NL team Dye ever played for was the Braves when he was 22. Beane got Dye from Kansas City. What does Colorado have to do with Dye?
Posted by: DodgersBruin | November 10, 2008 at 02:40 PM
Smith/Huston/Gonzales? I say that's a pretty fair deal for both teams. Smith is a decent back end starter, but soon would be out of the A's rotation with all their better pitching prospects. Huston is overrated like many closers are and injury prone. Gonzales still has upside and may be productive in the long run. Not a bad deal for 1 year of Holliday and compensation picks.
Posted by: Varmit | November 10, 2008 at 02:40 PM
Baseballismylyf4
Point is it is very poor decision making to expect Morales to come up and dominate in his first season. There have been a lot of players with great, God-like MiLB numbers who were slow to start their MLB careers, so until Morales PROVES his worth in the MLB, he can't replace a Tex'. And until that season where he proves his MLB worth, he has to be traated as a rookie who will struggle because that is more likely to happen in his rookie yearthan him succeeding
Posted by: defense | November 10, 2008 at 02:40 PM
yeah, but to perform like an all star hall of famer right out of the gate is very very rare, which is certainly the case with albert who has been on an absolute war path for the last few years
Posted by: 04Forever | November 10, 2008 at 02:41 PM
that's 4 teams in 4 years for gonzalez...that's gotta be tough.
Me wonders if something isn't wrong with Huston Street...
Just seems like a lot to give up for a year of Holliday. Well, plus 2 prospects if he has a good year.
Not sure on this one. Leaning towards Colorado with the edge here, but it will be interesting to see how it turns out.
Posted by: Dave | November 10, 2008 at 02:41 PM
Not to rain on your parade, but how are the A's affording Holliday (even if just for the 1 year), Furcal, and Giambi? That's 35 mio easily of 2009 payroll
Posted by: wayne gomes | November 10, 2008 at 02:41 PM

You really can't divide the A's ERA like that. Fact is that they were only .02 ERA points behind the Angels team ERA for the ENTIRE YEAR. There is no way a fan can say the Angels pitching was better for the whole 2008 season.
Posted by: defense | November 10, 2008 at 02:42 PM
I've figured out how it all makes sense for Oakland.....they are going to move the fences in 30 feet next year. That should be good for 50 bombs from Holliday!!
Seriously though, this has got to be a record for comments on an Athletics article.
Posted by: 1quik6 | November 10, 2008 at 02:43 PM
Well I just really doubt the Rox will get rid of Stewart this quickly. If they can pry away Holliday and Stewart from the Rox in one deal, then IMO the A's gave up WAY TOO MUCH!!!
Posted by: JP | November 10, 2008 at 02:44 PM
Wait, was thinking Gio Gonzalez, sorry.

And we dont even know the deal yet!
Posted by: Kramerica Industries | November 10, 2008 at 02:45 PM
Curious to see how Holliday does with the switch to the cavern away from the bandbox. No doubt Beane is hoping he puts up great numbers because if the A's tank again he's going to want to spin Holliday at the deadline. Seems like a pretty risky deal for the A's to me. Nice haul by Colorado for a one year rental, even if Street is injured.
Posted by: pageian | November 10, 2008 at 02:45 PM
Tim, have you heard anything about a Padres press conference this afternoon/evening? I know it's off topic, but I couldn't resist. My god, could this Peavy saga be nearing a conclusion?
Posted by: MattyRoss | November 10, 2008 at 02:45 PM
DodgersBruin do some homework. The Rox had Dye for a few hours from KC then flipped him to Oakland for 3 bust prospects.
Posted by: Athletic Domination | November 10, 2008 at 02:46 PM
The A's can afford it, Rosenthal says they can go to $80 mil. Furcal and Giambi could both be signed.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 10, 2008 at 02:46 PM
"You really can't divide the A's ERA like that"
Ummm, you can especially when the team traded two starters in Harden and Blanton, and you had two pitchers pitching way above their expected production in Eveland and Smith.
Posted by: cwilli | November 10, 2008 at 02:47 PM
so basically, with all these sportscaster going 100 different ways, we dont know who the prospect/players for holladay are yet?

"Hey melonis, what if Furcal and Giambi get on board too? Trade Barton+Crosby for an innings eater and all of a sudden the A's jump to forefront of the AL.
Anderson 09 = Hudson 99."
I don't think that's happening. Furcal wants a 4 year deal. NO WAY should the A's do that, period. I do not want to see both Furcal and Eric Chavez sitting on the DL for long periods of time. If Chavez can play 3B upon return, this could be interesting.
1B:Giambi/Barton
2B:Ellis
SS:Pennington
3B:Chavez
LF:Holliday
RF:Sweeney/Buck
CF:Cunningham
DH:Cust
Cust's numbers will probably be somewhere between his 2007 and 2008 numbers. I really think the lack of support in the lineup had something to do with his drop off, although I'm not sure.
And, if they add Giambi for 12MM and Holliday for 13MM, pairing that in with the 29MM they have committed for 2009 (although Street's money will come out so I'm guessing 26) and adding in arbitration (I think only Cust), their payroll will still be under what it was for 2007.

"DodgersBruin do some homework. The Rox had Dye for a few hours from KC then flipped him to Oakland for 3 bust prospects."
That's a 3 team trade. It wasn't Beane fleecing the Rockies GM for Dye. If anything, it was Beane fleecing the Royals. The Rockies gave up Neifi Perez. They traded Neifi Perez for 3 minor leaguers. That doesn't sound like much of a fleecing to me. Do YOUR homework and include the entire deal.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | November 10, 2008 at 02:51 PM
Well their gonna have to do more then this if they wanna be a playoff team, but this is a good start...They should look at Rafael Furcal and try and sign a pitcher.
Posted by: JT89 | November 10, 2008 at 02:51 PM
hey everyone I'm an A's fan, and after reading all of those posts, I don't think I saw a single A's fan say that this will completeley fix us. That would be ridiculous. But it does help, and as someone said the A's with Holliday are better than an Angles team without Tex and Rodriguez.
About the deal, I'd be willing to bet a months paycheck that Beane didn't include Cahill or Anderson. He wouldn't. I'm thinking C.Gon(damnit), Street + 1. Maybe a lower level prospect. That seems fair but only because it's Beane an he has a way with words. But I'd think it would be someone more like Vin Mazzaro, simply because the Rockies need pitching always. But then i I'd say the deal would go to the Rockies. I dunno but somewhere between Mazzaro and maybe Josh Outman would be a fair 3rd man.
Posted by: AriGoldisaG | November 10, 2008 at 02:53 PM
DodgersBruin, it wasnt a 3 teamer it was 2 deals on the same day, a true "flip":

FYI if anyone has been reading stuff about the A's the only position players guarenteed opening day spots if healthy are Ryan Sweeney, Mark Ellis, and Eric Chavez. (Although I don't understand Chavy) I think the outfield will be this.
LF - Matt Holliday
CF - Travis Buck/Aaron Cunningham
RF - Ryan Sweeney.
No way Sweeney isnt the starter their.

"About the deal, I'd be willing to bet a months paycheck that Beane didn't include Cahill or Anderson."
I hope you keep your money, Ari.

AriGold....Buck doesnt play CF he's a corner. Cunningham+Sweeney would be the CF combo if Cargo is done.
Posted by: Athletic Domination | November 10, 2008 at 03:00 PM
Buck should not be playing CF. I like some defense from my center fielder please.
The CF is Cunningham.
Sweeney is not that great a defender either. Either Buck is moved or Sweeney/Buck share an OF spot.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 10, 2008 at 03:06 PM
This move doesn't make a whole lot of sense for the A's, as they're not a contending team even with the addition of Holliday. They traded two very good pitchers in Blanton and Harden, with Duchscherer probably on the move soon. I think Beane will keep him until July and he'll be dealt to a team hoping to make a run for the playoffs. Who knows what'll happen, Billy Beane is a man of mystery.
Posted by: nymforlife | November 10, 2008 at 03:07 PM
Okay Athletic Domination, if you want to call it two deals, fine. We'll use your semantics.
In 2001 the Rockies were in the midst of a 73 win season. They had Neifi Perez for $3.5 mil and $4.1 mil in 2002. They traded him straight up for Dye who was making $3.8 mil. His salaries for the next 3 years were $7.1 mil, $11.6 mil, $11.6 mil.
The Rockies traded a player that wasn't going to help them compete (Perez) to a team that allowed them to trade another player that would be expensive and wouldn't help them compete (Dye) for 3 minor leaguers. In fact, I'll quote Joe Sheehan at the time of the trades (and he lumps them into one trade):
Joe Sheehan: Dye for Perez is a disaster. Encarnacion, Ortiz, and an arm for Dye is not bad. Perez for the three A's is a great deal. Ortiz in Coors could become a rich man. Dan O'Dowd moves up a few ticks in my eyes.
It's nice to look at the trade now and say none of the minor leaguers panned out. It's also nice to disregard salary. But there was no fleecing of the Rockies.

I think the market for Manny has just changed...Phillies were in the hunt for Holliday, which means they could go after Manny more aggresively, which could then make the Mets sign him to prevent the Phillies from getting better. Interesting move that changes the market up a bit. I see a Duchscherer deal next.

I am going out on a limb here but I do not think Beane is done dealing. His stockpile of talent could be used to shore up a lot of spots and build a team made to win for the next 1-3 yrs.

nymforlife - you know the a's have the second best farm system in mlb behind the Rays right? They have at least 8 SPs who all range from innings eaters to ace-quality. 3 of them are slated to come up throughout 09. They also play in the weakest div in mlb with the hapless, atrocious mariners, poorly run (get pitching you idiots) Rangers and overrated Angels. This move alone makes them contenders for the AL West. If the Angels dont get Teixiera or an impact bat they become irrelevant and nothing to worry about.

"If the Angels dont get Teixiera or an impact bat they become irrelevant and nothing to worry about."
Irrelevant and nothing to worry about? Hahaha
You folks realize that the Mariners had the same attitude lasy year and look where they ended up. The CELLAR.

I don't get it! Do the A's want to compete in '09?
Smith, Gonzalez and Street are WAY TOO MUCH!
The can't afford to prolongue his contract ... can they? ... should they?
Posted by: Burgi_14 | November 10, 2008 at 03:20 PM
Athletic Domination,
Yes they have a great young rotation, but who else on the offense is good besides Holliday? And the bullpen isn't that great.
Posted by: nymforlife | November 10, 2008 at 03:20 PM
And I'm not saying the A's will end up there, because the M's suck so bad but seroiusly, one player is not going to make your team an instant contender. Both you and the Nationals have the same problem.
Posted by: AFROTC Cadet | November 10, 2008 at 03:21 PM
Yeah bullpen isnt that great, its OUTSTANDING! What team are you thinking of?
Offensively Cust was their only hitter, now he finally has a known bat hitting behind him he might actually get a pitch to to hit every once in a while. Giambi and Furcal are both being targeted too. Chavez is supposedly healthy (doubt it though) but you have to take their word for it so thats 3 big bats+G-man and maybe Furcal, the offense could go from mediocre to excellent
Posted by: Athletic Domination | November 10, 2008 at 03:26 PM
Absurd! Holliday is spectacular but they're going to need a few other pieces to have a respectable offense next year.
Posted by: mford | November 10, 2008 at 03:26 PM
Well if the A's want to contend, then they're going to have to make alot more moves. Matt Holliday is going to disappoint in that big park...he'll hit .302 with 12 hrs and 58 rbi (at home) but .322 with 26 hrs and 84 rbi on the road.
Posted by: nymforlife | November 10, 2008 at 03:26 PM
scratch what i said...he'll hit for avg well at the coliseum, its just that he wont put up big power numbers
Posted by: nymforlife | November 10, 2008 at 03:28 PM
Athletics Domination, you got the second best minor league system part right, but actually you will be behind the Rangers not the Rays, which may actually have more pitching in their minors than the Athletics.
Texas truly has an incredible system, which is rather crazy if you look at how poor it was 2 years ago.
Posted by: laxtonto | November 10, 2008 at 03:28 PM
"And the bullpen isn't that great."
Joey Devine and Brad Ziegler would like to have a word with you...
Posted by: NorCalBB | November 10, 2008 at 03:29 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if Beane goes out and gets Fielder.
Posted by: nymforlife | November 10, 2008 at 03:29 PM
"Irrelevant and nothing to worry about? Hahaha

The Mariners FO last year had the same mindset as Angels fans who think they were actually a 100 win team this year. The Mariners won 88 games, but Pyth had them at 79 wins. They thought they were only a player or two away, so they traded for Bedard. In 2008 they won 61 games, with a Pyth of 67.
The Angels this season won 100 games, but had a Pyth of 88.
So in fact, it's the Angels fans that have the attitude of the Mariners FO than the A's fans.
Posted by: DodgersBruin | November 10, 2008 at 03:29 PM
BadVlad - you obviously dont pay much attention. The A's are more like the Rays than the Nats. Deep farm system, developing young stars, well-rounded in every area. The Angels offense is woeful, Vlad cant run anymore and if they dont sign Teixiera or Manny or someone like that then they become also-rans. Thats the cold hard truth. This div is completely open except the Mariners. If Oakland keeps making moves and the Angels stand still, then you have to give the edge to Oakland for 09.
Posted by: Athletic Domination | November 10, 2008 at 03:29 PM
So its been confirmed that Street and Gonzalez are the two other guys? And which Gonzalez, Carlos or Gio?
Posted by: nymforlife | November 10, 2008 at 03:30 PM
And your offense wasn't mediocre last year, it was horrendous and one of the worst in baseball.
Posted by: AFROTC Cadet | November 10, 2008 at 03:30 PM
laxtonto - agreed the Rangers and A's look the best in the division long-term, but they seem to be hell-bent on focussing on offense, which is ridiculous considering my mom could hit in that park. Holler at me when they get pitching, then they will be truly scary.
Posted by: Athletic Domination | November 10, 2008 at 03:32 PM
Gonzalez makes this a really good deal for Colorado, though I still think Ludwick would be a better haul than these 3 (especially for a team that can compete next year in Colorado).
Though the 2 draft picks will lighten the loss of Gonzalez.
Not awful for Beane, but I still give the edge to the Rockies.
Posted by: bobo | November 10, 2008 at 03:33 PM
Agreed, the offense was hard to watch last year, thats why moves are being made now to fix it.
I hope Prince Fielder is up next, just to thoroughly demoralize all the haters in this thread. (whatup with all these Angels trolls in here??? lol).

So your predicting a .312 38hr 142rbi season for Holliday nymforlife?
Posted by: HypnoToad | November 10, 2008 at 03:34 PM
Let's not jump to conclusions before we know the deal for sure, but I don't believe that it'll be Gonzalez, Street, and Smith. That seems like a bounty for a supposed one-year rental. I would think that Beane is a little smarter than that. Greg Smith is expendable given their starting pitching depth but I think Street could garner some interest (and a bounty) from other teams looking for a closer and Gonzalez looks like he'll have a bright future from what I've seen of him in the majors.
And to whoever said that Holliday will be flipped in July, I can't help but believe that as well.
Posted by: MattyMets | November 10, 2008 at 03:35 PM
The A's are still nowhere close to the Angels, anyone who thinks this trade closes the gap is in for some disappointment...
Posted by: metzfan22 | November 10, 2008 at 03:36 PM
yep...but remember, there's no "I" in team. The A's need more big bats if they want to win the west. If they go out and get Prince Fielder, then I think they'd have a legit chance at contending/
Posted by: nymforlife | November 10, 2008 at 03:37 PM
nymforlife- Carlos Gonzalez. Gio Gonzalez in Coors Field would be a nightmare. Greg Smith is also a flyball pitcher, so Rox fans beware.
The A's could easily afford to resign Holliday at 20MM per year. Chavez's money comes off the books right when most of the young players will be hitting arbitration. Perfectly timed.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 10, 2008 at 03:38 PM
Billy Beane is a big fan of mets prospect Dan Murphy..perhaps he can get the Mets to send him to Oakland in a deal next July
Posted by: nymforlife | November 10, 2008 at 03:38 PM
Well we know this for sure-Willy Taveras will be gone very very soon, now that the Rox added another OF.
Posted by: nymforlife | November 10, 2008 at 03:39 PM
Athletic Domination - I think you are the one who is not paying attention. Here is how your offense ranked to the rest of the AL
BA-14th out of 14th
OBP-13th out of 14th
SLG-14th out of 14th
Runs-14th out of 14th
And as for your pitching, you cannot say that it was comparable to the Angels because after you guys dealt Harden and Blanton yout team ERA was horrendous. So adding one person to your offense is not drastically going to improve your team!
