« Tigers Rumors: Zumaya, Hoffman, Miner | Main | Athletics Sign Chris Schroder »
Reds GM Walt Jocketty says that his team nearly settled on a deal for Coco Crisp, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer. "We were close," Jocketty said, although specific pieces aren't mentioned in the article. It'd be interesting to know what the Reds were offering considering the Red Sox received pitching help in exchange for Crisp.
The same article lists upgrading the bullpen as a focus of the Reds' offseason plans. Jocketty has been in touch with the agents of David Weathers and Mike Lincoln, but doesn't expect to sign anyone soon.
Jocketty also talks about being surprised by how quickly reliever Jeremy Affeldt signed a deal. However, the article also points out that Affeldt wasn't signed until January 23rd this past offseason.

Burton? Bray? I wouldnt give either of those guyhs up...Malony and Roeneke wouldve been close...but Im assuming they tried to push too much...i mean Crisp didnt even net that much in return...

Is it wrong to have read the title as "Crisp almost A-Rod"?

Walt Jocketty said Coco Crisp was almost a rod? LOL good one goggles.

I woundn't say the Red Sox netted nothing. They got rid of an outfielder that they had no position for and rid themselves of his salary for a pretty solid reliver. I'd say they made out pretty well.

Ok Ned Colletti, now we know the Reds are seeking some outfield help, specifically a durable centerfielder who can bat leadoff. Offer up Pierre for a reliever, or a couple prospects, while picking up some of his contract.
It'd be a good contract dump, and we could get Pierre that everyday starter role he deserves.

I dont want Pierre unless we get other talent with him

The Reds should sisn Mark Kotsay...He didn't put up bad numbers this year and also plays good defense in CF and he's proly only looking for a 1 year contract...They could look at Juan Pierre, but the Dodgers prolly want too much for him and teams aren't gonna offer alot since they'll be taking on his big contract.

Juan Pierre!! Wow you can't be serious! I hope he would play 2nd base cause thats the only way he can reach home plate with his arm! And at 8 Mil a season mine as well make a trade for someone with real upside. All we need is another poor defensive player. I also think Mark Kotsay would be a good pick up, but wouldnt fill all are needs. I'm looking forward to what Jocketty does this offseason.

I am quite sure the Dodgers do not want "too much" for him.
I think the Dodgers could match up with Reds on a small Pierre deal, where we eat salary (the more we eat the better the player we get back).
or
If the Reds were willing to move a SP or Double E Edwin Encarnacion, we could send addtional talent the Reds' way...

Even if the Dodgers picked up the majority of the contract I wouldn't send anyone of value for Pierre. He's a poor defensive OF that is also OBP challenged. Honestly Dickerson is probably a better option at this point.

Dude, Walt Jocketty says everybody was almost a Red after they sign/get traded to another team.
In a few weeks..."CC was almost a Red", "We almost landed Peavy", "Reds almost landed Obama as our president...so close."

Jocketty is full of a brown substance that smells really bad and can be found in some unflushed toliets.

Rumor has it that the Reds mascott has taken the front office hostage and is demanding a trade. Wait...it's coming over the wire now....Walt Jocketty for Billy Beane. I guess even the mascot is pissed off.
