Do Angels Have Genuine Interest In Manny?

Angels owner Arte Moreno had kind words for Manny Ramirez in a recent radio appearance, sparking talk that he could jump in and swipe the slugger from the Dodgers.  However, the general sense is that Moreno just wanted to get people talking about the Angels and perhaps hopes to drive up Ramirez's price for the Dodgers.

Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times gets a peek at Scott Boras' binder for Ramirez, which predicts 204 home runs and 684 RBIs over the next six years.  Shaikin quotes Angels GM Tony Reagins saying his priority is elsewhere and the Manny discussion hasn't taken place, so right now the Dodgers don't face serious competition.

Shaikin also notes that the Dodgers are more likely to sign Orlando Cabrera to a short-term deal than re-sign Rafael Furcal.

On the Denholm and Long show on 710 ESPN in LA, they spent the first hour and 15 minutes of their show about the Angels showing interest in Manny, if they do not sign Mark Teixeria.

They pointed out how a Manny signing to the Angels could literally crush the Dodger franchise. They talked about Manny's impact on the Dodgers, attendance increase, and how the fans have embraced him as a Dodger.

They compared out the competitive ownership mindset of Arte Moreno and Tony Reagins vs making the splash, unthoughtful signing and moves of Ned Colletti and Frank McCourt and the Angels spotlight if the signing happened.

Some of the Dodger fans mentioned via e-mail/text and through call-ins how they would literally stop being fans if a Manny signing doesn't take place.

Moreno has laid his cards on the table that Tex is his priority first. If unable to sign, they will pursue Manny.

As an Angel fan, I would love them to see both Tex and Manny. Angels are strong in pitching and can look at Adenhart as their fifth starter, however, will need to replace K-Rod and attempt to resign Darren Oliver.

Angels need a bat, if they can't re-sign Tex and lose Krod this is definitely not the 100 win team from last season.

buster olney is predicting that Manny ends up with the Nationals. Is he serious? Manny and Barack, what a country!

I love the inferiority complex the Angels owner and fans have with the dodgers. The funny thing is the Angels fans are the most fairweather fans in the planet. Thats not an opinion its been well documented. Disney land is too close and if they start losing everyone hits the rides. Moreno will never appeal to real dodger fans who hate the angels regardless of the Manny signing. Ill advised signings are worse than missed signings and unless the dodgers can get manny done for 3 to 4 years at most its not smart for a organization with a bright future irregardless. Angels make many poor decisions such as Gary Matthews and not trading Willits to the padres for Kuzmanoff when Willits had value. They also missed the miggy signing for overvaluing their own infield prospects. Is it ill advised to pay pierre 9m a year and get what you expect or to pay gary matthews quite a bit more and not get the roid inflated stats you were hoping for. Last I checked Manny got the dodgers further then tex did the angels. So go invest 10 years of your future into someone who will opt for the lowsy nationals over mickey mouse....meanwhile boras will have already moved manny somewhere as teixeira is his biggest payday.

This Angel fan does not have inferiority complex and have been a fan since 1967. I hope the Dodgers do sign Manny. It will give you guys a chance to win a playoff series like you did this year, even if it did take 21 years. Gary Matthews signing pales in comparison to giving Andruw Jones 36 million. Matthews at least had a decent season the year before the contract. Enjoy losing the season series to the Angels.

I'd be upset if the Dodgers signed Orlando Cabrera. He hasn't had a league average OPS+ since 2003. If Furcal is asking for more than 3 years and we had to sign a SS, I'd opt for Renteria. We might be able to get him for cheaper than Cabrera, and he at least had a 125 OPS+ with the Braves in 2007.
As for the Angels/ Dodgers fans, no real fan changes his allegiance because of a player who was on a team for 2 months. And Angels fans can try to degrade the Dodgers franchise for only winning one playoff series over the past 21 years, but the Angels have been around since 1961 and have a total of 8 playoff appearances and 1 WS victory. Since the Dodgers moved to LA, they have 9 pennants. So don't go acting like your team is the Yankees because you've won the feeble AL West a few times over the past 8 years.

The real problem is Dodger fans low self esteem. They stand idlly by while ownership charges ($15 for parking, $10 for a tall beer, steep ticket increases every year. and they they wine that they cant afford to take on more salary.) They expect so little from their ownership it has to be an identity problem. Down in Anaheim our owner offers cheap beer, a consistently competitive team, $7 parking a handful of reasonably priced seats and cheap souvenirs. Even the most avid Angel haters recognize that the Dodger organization is run terribly especially from a relative standpoint.

As far as Manny goes he is a nutcase, but he is an exception. Normally hitters age poorly becasue they rely on their diminishing athleticism. Manny will age VERY WELL, he relys on ID'ing pitches and a pretty natural ability to get to the ball through the shortest route.

Finally the Angels going after Manny is a brilliant move (Even if he is nuts). This is a strategic move to dishearten the Dodgers already devastated fan base. Arte Moreno is a shrewd genius and has already got the Angels to popularity never previously seen. You can talk all you want about "real Dodger fans never changing" but losing gets old quick my blue friends.

Dont assume anything.

Also the NL west statistically has been by far and away the worst division for the majority of a decade. As of two years ago (and before that) the AL west was always considered one of the top divisions. Stop being bitter and living in a history book.

Ok so Angel fans are making fun of Dodger fans for losing.

I'm a Red Sox fan, can I contribute to this discussion? Because I think we send one of you two home every year.

"Also the NL west statistically has been by far and away the worst division for the majority of a decade. As of two years ago (and before that) the AL west was always considered one of the top divisions. Stop being bitter and living in a history book."

You just referenced statistics from past seasons, as well as your own division two years ago, yet you're telling others to stop living in a history book.

You're an idiot bro.

I know Boras isnt supposed to be realistic, but isnt it just insulting to GMs when he suggests Manny will hit 204 HR and 684 RBI in the next 6 years (ages 37-42). As a point of reference he hit 217 HR and 689 RBI from the ages 32-37.

At what point do GMs become so impatient with Boras and his ridiculous tactics that it actually hurts his clients?

Hah, I will be damned if Good Burger is gonna call me an idiot.

I was addressing a false argument by a Dodger fan. Referencing the 50's as a teams prowess is a bit different then talking about things that happened in this decade.

Because now this conversation is in the past.

"I was addressing a false argument by a Dodger fan. Referencing the 50's as a teams prowess is a bit different then talking about things that happened in this decade."

Admittedly it's a bit different but you refuted his argument with your own reference to history, which you already cautioned against.

Non sensical? Yes

We can compare the NL West and AL West. Sure.
2008: Dodgers to NLCS, Angels lose ALDS.
2007: Rockies to WS, Diamondbacks to NLCS, Angels lose ALDS.
2006: Dodgers and Padres lose in NLDS, A's to ALCS.
2005: Padres lose NLDS, Angels to ALCS.

Please show me how the AL West was one of the top divisions. The Rangers have been pathetic since they signed A-Rod, the Mariners haven't been good since 2002. The A's have been rebuilt multiple times. And the Angels have won 1 World Series.

Since 1993 an AL West team has played in the World Series once (2002). But the NL West has had representatives 4 representatives.

As for your beer prices, beer may be cheaper, but it's also smaller.

Manny and K-Rod's predecessor to LA.

Well, for starters, citing how well teams do in the playoffs is not at all indicative of how good a DIVISION is.

1) Only one, MAYBE two teams from each division make the playoffs, which means that the depth of a division's quality does not at all appear by looking at the playoffs.

2) The American League's playoff competition for the last several years has ROUTINELY been stronger than that of the National League, making it easier to advance in the NL.

3) The playoffs are, generally speaking, a bit of a crapshoot. The best team doesn't necessarily always win (ESPECIALLY in MLB's terrible playoff format), so showing that one or two teams from a division won a few playoff games doesn't show anything about the strength of that WHOLE division.

It's not that I agree or disagree that the NL West or AL West is the better division, it's just that using playoff records to tell us how good the regular season in-fighting in the division is to GET to those playoffs is really, really dumb. You selectively pull out stats and generalities to substantiate your claim that the AL West is bad, and do NOTHING to show how bad the NL West is (like, say, sending in a division winners with 84, 90, 88, and 82 wins over the last 4 years while the Major League average over that time has been 93). I could also point out that in those 4 World Series appearances, the NL West has only won one in the last 20 years, and was SWEPT in two of them (3 if you want to go back to 1989). It works both ways, champ.

And if you're going to be petty about the beer, I frequent both stadiums quite often...Angels' beer is cheaper, regardless of size. It's stupid to argue matters of verifiable fact, man.

BK and Dodger fans: Have you looked at the Dodgers roster lately? If the Dodgers do not sign Manny Ramirez and they continue to make decisions similar to Andruw Jones, Jason Schmidt, Juan Pierre, etc. they are as good as done for 2009 even with the talent they have.

They need a SS, 3B, and #5 starter and project James McDonald as a #4 starter (you know how rookie SP's go) and they need to figure out whether or not they will resign Saito (who is getting a year older and is breaking down).

The Angels need either a 1B or LF, they are solidified 1-4 in the starting rotation and need to fly reliable replacements for K-Rod and Darren Oliver.

Angels no doubt need help in hitting, but it isn't as bad as the Dodgers. The one bat in Manny will help them.

Hey Big Mac, 2005 called. It wants its joke back.

haha shelley, nice

oh and parking is $8 at the stadium, not $7 lol

I don't know about other Dodger fans but I'm tired of holding onto the Manny "Summer Fling". It was wonderful don't get me wrong but with all the money an approaching 40 year old is asking for is ridiculous...If we do sign him of course i will be ecstatic BUT...Dodger fans need to realize that the free agent market this year is most fruitfull its been in years...here are some of my ideas:

Step 1: We need to sign K-Rod

Step 2: send Broxton in a packaged deal for Peavy (if he ends up not going to the Braves)...beings that Hoffman is gone, San Diego will need fresh arms

Step 3 (optional): sign C.C. Sabathia...Now already you have a rotation of...

Peavy
Sabathia
Billingsly
Kuroda
Kershaw

and K-Rod closing

Step 4: sign Adam Dunn!...ya did everyone forget about him? He has hit 40+ hrs five year in a row! (yes i know he hits about .240 and strikes out alot but he could be the power we need...for much cheaper than Manny!)

signing Dunn, Sabathia (still optional!) and K-Rod will probably be just a little more expensive than signing JUST Manny...now who would YOU rather have?

I agree with you about Manny, but I think signing Krod and trading Broxton is a terrible move. For one thing, it would cost us Broxton plus probly Mcdonald plus 2 other really good prospects (Elbert and maybe Dewitt). For another, just let Peavy go to the Braves, and it will be a win for us just to get him out of the West.

Also, where would we play Dunn? We have no room for him.

What the Dodgers should do is let Manny go and take the draft picks, just like we will do with Lowe and Blake.

We should go after CC, but not match the Yankees offer, just put a good offer and hoppe he wants to pitch near home.

If no CC, then lets go after Orlando Hudson, Edgar Renteria, and Oliver Perez. Then we resign Beimel, Park, Nomar (to a bench role which he might seriously think about), and Berroa.

I would much rather see that happen then give Manny or CC too much money and too many years.

angels could make similar offer to mamny: big buck for short years
and not just to piss off dodgers. that should only be a bonus.
they need to realize – for the same reason they should go after CC or tarde for Prince – is that they need a dose of character. the organization knows talent, but they just seem too too uptight, near anal, to let the talent loose
the one problem is vladdie is still vladdie at the dish, but he's footsteps away from being a DH.

TO Ivdown:

i actually agree to most of everything you said...getting Renteria is a MUCH smarter move than getting Furcal in my opinion and ive been on board for getting Hudson for a while now. I still kinda like the Dunn idea haha...but i thought of this recently:

Can Loney play LF???

we know he used to be a pitcher so hes got the arm for it and hes already Gold Glove quality at 1B and would provide BETTER defense than Manny in Left

if so...

Go after Teixeira!

sing him to a longterm at only the age of 29!

resign Blake, Beimel, Nomar, Park (even though im still kinda shaky about him having another good season) and i would pass on Berroa and maybe sing Alex Cora again

sign maybe like a Henry Blanco as a backup catcher

i do like the Oliver Perez idea but i would even add Ben Sheets to that too

so we would have a lineup of:

Renteria
Hudson
Teixeira
Ethier
Kemp
Loney
Martin
Blake

And a Rotation of:

Billingsley
Sheets
Kuroda
Perez
Kershaw

hmm...its all looks ok but hopefully a better SP is picked up
