WEDNESDAY: The Dodgers chose Penny's $2MM buyout over the $9.25MM option, according to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick.
TUESDAY: According to Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News, the Dodgers are "almost certain" to choose Brad Penny's $2MM buyout over his $9.25MM option for 2009. Jackson believes the decision will be made soon.
Penny left the Dodgers without saying goodbye; he was displeased the team did not exercise his '09 option in the spring. He dealt with shoulder problems throughout the season.

Kind of surprising to me, must be his attitude or that they strongly have doubts about his health.
Jackson also states in the comments that there is nothing to the Martin rumors, from what he's heard.

The relationship apparently really soured and they obvioiusly have some concerns on his health, because they essentially decided that he was not worth 6.5 million. He is a solid pitcher, and with Billingesly stepping up he would not need to be a #1 anymore, so you think that it would have been worth it to take a chance that he could fill a end of the rotation slot at worst.

he will probably end up with the yankees if the CC deal for some reason falls through, or maybe even if it does, like maybe if andy and moose retire

Well with Billingesly and Kershaw, plus young arms in the pen they dont really need him to hang around with injury concerns. Also, they have a chance at landing CC or even Peavy in a trade. Not that they will, but they certainly have the players and money. They may also be willing to commit more money this offseason knowing that Jones (and maybe Pierre??) will be off the books next year. If they put that money towards Crede or Blake the team overall improves.
I wonder what type of deal Penny will want? All the team in the NL central besides the bucs seem like they may look into him if he takes a deal around 5 million with incentives and options.

Still think this was a sign and then trade opportunity. $7m isn't too bad and if Penny is healthy you could absolutely flip him for useful pieces by mid-season.

Pierre.. no :(
i really like pierre though. i just think he got a raw deal(all the dodger OFs) and his contracts devalues him, if that makes sense. i think penny will either come back with a one year deal or he will go somewhere on the east coast for 2 years plus alot of incentives

From what I hear, Penny was pretty much a cancer in the clubhouse and the Dodgers are tired of his crap.

The Dodgers should trade Pierre, Wade, and Hu to the Tigers for Nate Robertson and Placido Polanco.
They should then trade Jones, some low level prospect and a good portion of Jones' salary to the Mariners for M. Bautista.
Resign Furcal (2 year 22M with a bunch of insenives and mutual option for the third year that would make it identical to the first contract he signed), Saito (1 year 5M) Ramirez (offer 3 year, 75M. If he won't take it, fine, expand the Pierre trade to bring in Ordonez), Biemel (3 year 10M), Garciaparra (2 year, 7M)
Sign Sabathia to a 6 year 120M deal.
Who for Tigers? Basically, the Tigers need relief, a leadoff hitter and a shortstop. Now they do...
Why for Mariners? Jones provides a potential all star centerfielder and his defense with Ichiro's will make one of the best defensive outfields. Bautista provides nothing to them and if they can get a couple prosects on top of not eating much of Jones' contract, they should be willing.
Why for the Dodgers? Polanco provides a leader and a fine second baseman. Robertson, Bautista and Schmidt can fight out for a rotation spot which can only create good problems.
Calculating all the contracts, the Dodger salary is only around 125M. That is what they paid last year!

I just read that the Dodgers have some interest in Hudson, but I'd imagine the only way they get him is if they don't bring back Furcal or if they don't sign Manny/CC.

I hate this move if the option is declined. Penny has been an above average starter since joining the Dodgers, less this past season full of injuries. Attitudes can always be improved, and if not, he could always be traded next season. If we decline the option, we get nothing.

plz the Yankees will not sign this guy. I'd rather re-sign Pavano for Sabathia money than invest in Penny.

Maybe someone can clarify if misunderstand the whole process but tell me what you think of this idea: pick up Penny's 9.25 mil option and trade him before the season begins. Aren't salaries prorated during the season? If they are, then flip him to another team before you have to pay him. This way, the team saves the 2 mil they'd be throwing away by letting him walk. It would be nice to get some quality in return but just the idea of saving 2 mil toward the Manny fund appeals to me. Or do I have the whole thing wrong?

was penny really that bad of a guy?
Posted by: elbrav0 | November 05, 2008 at 12:38 AM
I think the Mets should take a shot on him. Didn't he start the all star game for the NL in 2007? I know that he was injured last year. That is what makes him intriguing.
Posted by: surdo | November 05, 2008 at 04:37 AM
His shoulder must be thrashed. Where can you find a #1 or #2 starter for 9 million? As much as it pissed people off, the Dodgers were right about Gagne. There's alot that doesn't hit the press!
Posted by: Big Mac | November 05, 2008 at 08:16 AM
Good riddance.
His attitude with the fans was just as bad as Sheffield and Kevin Brown's. Now all LA has to do is get rid of Snorlax, err! Andruw Jones.
Posted by: la16 | November 05, 2008 at 04:06 PM
And what type of selling point do you have to move a guy who hit .158, and was on pace to out strike out Mark Reynolds who this season founded the 200 strikeout club?

Can someone give more info on Penny's attitude and/or clubhouse problems?
No doubt the Dodgers are gearing up to spend a bunch of money and didn't think Penny was worth the investment. Maybe they could have signed and traded him but given his injury that was no sure thing and might not net them anything useful anyway. They're going to use that money for offers to Manny and CC probably which is a better use of their money anyway.
Penny will likely end up with a one year $5-10 million with incentives by one of the AL East teams.
Posted by: pageian | November 05, 2008 at 04:34 PM
It's not much of a surprise that he was bought out, because 9M is too much for an injured and unhappy player. But I think he could really help out a team next year, he should have enough time to recover. I remember when he was throwing 97 MPH gas a year or two ago. Getting a potential ace for the price of a 4-5 is a huge bargain.

loneyrightfielder,
first penny would have to pass a physical to be traded. Then you must consider if your a team trading for him, you either give up basically nothing because of the money, or you make the dodgers pay his salary and still give up basically nothing because of health concerns. Front office people are pretty smart, im sure they didnt just release him for no reason, there must have been serious health concerns that they felt next year would be mostly rehab.
Posted by: chicubs25 | November 05, 2008 at 05:38 PM
As someone who follows the Dodgers VERY closely, this was a no-brainer. Penny was FAT, not a very good teammate, and had some run-ins with the coaching staff. He also hasn't been a very good pitcher for a year and a half and even though the option was reasonable, the Dodgers have other needs for that money.
Posted by: vtadave | November 05, 2008 at 05:56 PM
chicubs25,
I assumed that Penny would fetch at least 9 mil as a free agent this winter if not much more. I was of the opinion that if the Dodgers picked up the 9 mil option and then flipped him before the season began for a case of Cracker Jack they would, at the very least, save the 2 mil buyout cost. But if there rumors about health concerns, they yeah, I see your point.
