« Odds and Ends: Mussina, Proefrock, Cuban | Main | Braves Make Offer To Ohman »
2:39pm: MLB.com's Mark Sheldon says it's a two-year, $8MM deal for Affeldt. Nice signing! Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says the Giants are not done looking for relievers, though Chris Haft figures Joe Beimel is out on account of his left handedness.
1:46pm: According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News, the Giants signed lefty reliever Jeremy Affeldt to a two-year deal. He was a Type B free agent, so the Reds will receive a sandwich pick for him in the June draft.
I'm surprised Affeldt didn't pursue a closing job; ESPN's Keith Law ranked him as the second best reliever on the market (ahead of Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes). Affeldt seemingly overplayed his hand as a free agent last offseason, so maybe that was a factor.

(SIGH)...I love this time of the year. Let the games begin!!!!

SS Furcal
CF Sweeney
DH Cust
LF Holliday
3B/1B/DH Chavez
C Suzuki
RF Buck
2B Ellis
1B Barton
I can live with that lineup, especially if Barton and Ellis can at least hit league average.
Posted by: green_and_gold | November 17, 2008 at 01:53 PM
I love it too. Almost more than the regular season :)
Posted by: striker | November 17, 2008 at 01:54 PM
assuming the $ isn't insane, i think this is aprefect signing... not too long of a deal, no picks lost and a very solid bully arm...
Good start Sabes...

1. Why are the Giants investing in high end RP? Shouldn't they be saving their money for a time when they can, you know, contend???
2. Affeldt STILL couldn't get a three year deal? Really? I mean, if this were January 15 and Affeldt was taking a 2 year deal, fine, that makes some sense, taking what he can get. But it seems like some desperate GM might have gone into that territory if Affeldt had just waited a bit.
Posted by: MEddler | November 17, 2008 at 01:55 PM
Who does Keith Law have ranked #1??
Posted by: MPM | November 17, 2008 at 01:55 PM
MEddler,
If you haven't noticed lately, the NL West is pretty weak. Everyone is a contender.
Posted by: striker | November 17, 2008 at 01:56 PM
I'm suprised of how bad the Mets bullpen was that they are not being aggresive with some relief pitchers. They need more than just a closer. But for real finally some action.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | November 17, 2008 at 01:58 PM
Solid signing by the Giants. I was hoping my Cardinals would be able to sign Affeldt.
Posted by: JP | November 17, 2008 at 01:58 PM
MPM I think K. Wood
Posted by: DominicanYanks | November 17, 2008 at 01:59 PM
I guess, I mean the Giants do have the good young rotation, but still. If they wanna make a run, shouldn't they be more focused on getting some impact offense first? Wasn't Bengie Molina their HR leader in 2008? or something?
Posted by: MEddler | November 17, 2008 at 01:59 PM
Interesting. Did anyone have the Giants in on this guy?
They still need a bat, and have needed one for awhile.
Dunn?
Posted by: basicslop | November 17, 2008 at 02:01 PM
It's a nice little signing for the Giants (assuming it's not more than 8 millionish). Affeldt is very solid and has posted back to back 130 ERA+ years.
Everybody stats-oriented seems so down on KRod among top relievers. No, he wasn't one of the top relievers in the AL last year (saves be damned), but he's still a valuable reliever and still 26. The guy has never posted an ERA+ below 145 or K/9 below 10. He has a very violent delivery but he's never been injured. He's still a much, much better pitcher than Affeldt until you take into account money, and Law wasn't.
Posted by: vignette17 | November 17, 2008 at 02:05 PM
the mets already have two middling LOOGYs in feliciano and schoeneweis
Posted by: chongli | November 17, 2008 at 02:05 PM
Im pretty sure everyone lieks Affeldt. Good signing by the Giants. They could contend in the next couple years and now they're building a solid bullpen around Wilson and Affeldt.
Posted by: Showtime35 | November 17, 2008 at 02:06 PM
Interesting indeed.
Wonder if the Giants said they would give him a shot at the #5 spot? Everyone (including Tim Dierkes) keeps bringing up that he only signed a 1-year deal with the Reds last offseason. But everyone fails to mention that the Reds let him compete for a rotation spot and apparently no one else would. I find it hard to imagine he didn't have other opportunities last offseason for more years and/or dollars, but I think he wanted to start.
Maybe the Giants promised him something similar? Either that or they overpaid for the 2 years? If he's getting anything less than $8 million over the two years, this is a steal. And even more could be justified, given all Affeldt's positives (lots of GB, plenty of K, no platoon split).
Posted by: mymrbig | November 17, 2008 at 02:07 PM
Maybe Affeldt preferred a two-year deal to three. Law had Wood ranked first among RPs.
I don't remember anyone saying K-Rod wasn't a good reliever.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | November 17, 2008 at 02:07 PM
I'd go after Tex and trade for Dye if I were SF. Maybe Winn + Cash + prospect for Dye. That would give them 2 good power hitters.
Posted by: striker | November 17, 2008 at 02:08 PM
And I am pretty shocked he signed this early. Seems like at least one team would have given him the inside track on closing or a shot at the rotation if he wanted either. If he accepted a 2-year deal (rather than 3 or 4) without an opportunity to start or close, then he must either (1) have the crappiest agent in all the land; OR (2) really like SF.
Posted by: mymrbig | November 17, 2008 at 02:10 PM
Can't imagine Affeldt going back to starting after the success as a reliever lately. If he fell apart a bit, perhaps. Could be wrong though.
I would have to think he realizes that there is a chance to close in San Francisco if Wilson doesn't turn that ERA around next year and then he could be in line for a great contract after two years.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 17, 2008 at 02:11 PM
Kudos to Sabes!
Great setup man for Wilson!!!
Posted by: 55saveslives | November 17, 2008 at 02:14 PM
Beautiful move by Sabes.
I don't know why the Mets didn't get in on him though. They have more money to spend, and Affeldt would be the perfect addition for the pen.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 17, 2008 at 02:25 PM
Affeldt gone..Gregg gone. Looks like Cleveland is not getting any pitching. Figures. Maybe Hoffman if they are lucky.
Posted by: Pronkfan789 | November 17, 2008 at 02:41 PM
Affeldt must have been set on New York for that money
Posted by: 04Forever | November 17, 2008 at 02:41 PM
Nice signing by the Giants. Wish he would return to the Rockies, but oh well, still hoping for Beimel.
Posted by: mkorpal | November 17, 2008 at 02:42 PM
Nice move. Little likelihood to negatively impact the roster beyond 2010. Adds stability to the pen and time to sort through/grow some of the younger arms in the system. I almost could like this new Sabean. Almost.
Posted by: daveinexile | November 17, 2008 at 02:44 PM
Not a Giants fan, but this is a good signing, I think. Having recently been to SF for pleasure I can see why he signed so quickly. $4m a year to live there and play baseball? Why wouldn't you? :)
Posted by: daslied | November 17, 2008 at 02:44 PM
Glad the Cubs sent Ceda over for Kevin Gregg. Could have signed Affeldt, filling the need for a lefty in the bullpen, and not had to give up a top prospect to do it. Idiots.
Posted by: mmontice | November 17, 2008 at 02:51 PM
oppps, my error, i said new york! haha. thinking about football i guess
Posted by: 04Forever | November 17, 2008 at 02:56 PM
nice signing but they still can't hit their way out of a paper bag. Again I say, this team has 3-2 and 2-1 losses written all over them.
Posted by: philsWSchamps | November 17, 2008 at 02:58 PM
"Glad the Cubs sent Ceda over for Kevin Gregg. Could have signed Affeldt, filling the need for a lefty in the bullpen, and not had to give up a top prospect to do it. Idiots."
Yeah, good move by Sabean.
Posted by: studio179 | November 17, 2008 at 02:59 PM
It's exactly what the Giants have said they will do: "Short term production, long term flexibility." This is the way you rebuild.
The good is that Affeldt is underrated and deserves an impact role in a Major League bullpen. He has the potential to be good, and possibly great if he somehow lucks into a closing role. His value could skyrocket returning back to the NL West and he may be able to net a solid return on the trade market in 2010, if the Giants are out of contention, or maybe net drafts picks as compensation.
The bad is that he is a RP signed by a team desperately in need of an impact hitter. Although an $8 million dollar commitment isn't much, it is something. They do address one of their weaknesses, bullpen, but it shouldn't be their top priority.
All in all: solid signing with potential for more.

"The bad is that he is a RP signed by a team desperately in need of an impact hitter. Although an $8 million dollar commitment isn't much, it is something. They do address one of their weaknesses, bullpen, but it shouldn't be their top priority. "
But developing their young pitching is. As guys like Alderson, Bumgarner, etc. come up, having a quality bullpen(and defense) instills confidence.
Posted by: melonis rex | November 17, 2008 at 03:06 PM
This is their first FA signing, no need to jump on them for not bringing in a bat.
I think that this signals that they think they can content this season...and in the NL West, they should be able to.
Solid rotation, improving bullpen, add a couple of FA bats and they are competitive in a weak division.
Also, I know that Aaron Rowand has been trashed on this and other sites....but the guy is a great player. I am looking for him to have a solid rebound season which will improve the Giants quite a bit.
Posted by: 7thinningstretch | November 17, 2008 at 03:06 PM
awesome move by sabean, i dont think it could have been better, my first choice for rp this offseason
Posted by: SF in 2010 | November 17, 2008 at 03:14 PM
Let's all not forget that the Giants still have to drag Barry Zito's dead lifeless body along for the ride.
Posted by: mmontice | November 17, 2008 at 03:21 PM
Makes the Yankees re-signing Damaso Marte for 3 seasons look like an idiot move.
They should have just offered him arb. If he accepted it...good . If he didnt and a team signed him, they would have gotten two picks.
Posted by: jza1218 | November 17, 2008 at 03:26 PM
great 1st move. Now get beimel and cruz and we have a pen
Posted by: Longing for Manny...Burriss that is!!! | November 17, 2008 at 03:29 PM
Beimel won't be looked at now..it was either / or.
We have two solid lefties now with Affeldt and Hinshaw. Which also may mean Tasch will be gone.
Posted by: 55saveslives | November 17, 2008 at 03:44 PM
Thankyou Sabean for getting this party started !
And as a bonus it was a great signing.
Something must be wrong with Sabean !

"Also, I know that Aaron Rowand has been trashed on this and other sites....but the guy is a great player."
Ugh.
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 17, 2008 at 03:51 PM
Great pickup and he isn't even 30+ years old yet. Even if they suck this year, its $2.5MM or so spent on a guy who will likely bring in a very nice deal at the deadline. I guess I like this less if he got an NTC but, even then, its a really strong pickup. Surprising.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 17, 2008 at 03:51 PM
Great move. For two years only, wow.
Posted by: yankfan1 | November 17, 2008 at 03:52 PM
I wonder how many GMs threw up when they saw this deal announced.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 17, 2008 at 03:52 PM
Damn, one less lefty out there for the Cardinals now.
Posted by: Cardsfan387 | November 17, 2008 at 03:54 PM
Good signing. It's difficult to project the effectiveness and consistency of RP year to year, but signing a lefty is never bad (and he isn't getting overpaid!).
Posted by: twoseamer | November 17, 2008 at 03:55 PM
I don't think this means absolutly no Beimel although it does make it less likely. They could go with 3 lefties still. I do however think it means jack Taschner is on the block. What might you get for him with already signing the 2 best lefty relievers, if that did happen
Posted by: Longing for Manny...Burriss that is!!! | November 17, 2008 at 04:01 PM
Taschner's peripherals aren't all that great and he's hardly a lefty killer. His value is in throwing with his left hand, not doing so effectively, so the return probably wouldn't be all that great.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 17, 2008 at 04:11 PM
(I used "all that great" twice in one post. Shameful.)
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 17, 2008 at 04:12 PM
Excellent move by Sabean, to get the jump on everyone else with a quality pickup at a reasonable cost and no draft pick consequences. I suspect they'll move on to another reliever pickup now ASAP at no cost in picks to them, or at worst a Type B. Who fits that bill?
As for Taschner, remember they re-upped him in 2008 for a relatively small $$ amount of about $1 million, which makes him attractive as part of a package with a starter to another team for infield help. If they are still looking for lefty help (Beimel?), then it means that Taschner is gone as part of an upcoming package deal.
Again, a great pick-up.
Posted by: Buck Henry | November 17, 2008 at 04:17 PM
Nice signing. I'd like to see them go after some offense now. Let a few of the young guys develop into reliever roles. Furthermore we have a couple starters at AAA who could vie for a relief role.
Hinshaw hasn't looked sharp in the AFL. :(

Braves make an offer to Ohman.

Posted by: Cardsfan387 | November 17, 2008 at 04:32 PM
If we did sign beimel and go with a affeldt/beimel/hinshaw lefty combo, with the rays not looking like they will resign left specialist trever miller, i could see the defending AL champs trading hardly nothing to test trashner in a possible new environment.
Posted by: Leland11 | November 17, 2008 at 04:40 PM
Coming from The Great American Launching Pad, this guy should put up some nice numbers in San Francisco. It'll make him an even more valuable commodity when it's time to trade him or the contract's up. Good signing. Maybe the bullpen can hold onto a handful of wins for Matt Cain now.
Posted by: The Management | November 17, 2008 at 04:41 PM
yeah, I wasn't trying to imply Taschner was good or quality. More so of the obvious and already stated: he is a lefty, young enough, and cheap and looking for his first payday down the road, but he still has to earn it. If, and it's a big if, they get Beimel, that allows them to slow down hinshaw for development. I wonder if a package of taschner and others, say winn, could fetch much.
Posted by: Longing for Manny...Burriss that is!!! | November 17, 2008 at 04:45 PM
you see the reason the Mets didn't sign him was because he is American, and Minaya only signs latinos.
Posted by: gursk1989 | November 17, 2008 at 04:48 PM
"you see the reason the Mets didn't sign him was because he is American, and Minaya only signs latinos."
I have never heard this joke before. It is truly groundbreaking comedy.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | November 17, 2008 at 04:55 PM
At first i was upset the reds didnt resign him...but im sure they didnt sign him because they would get a pick...we NEED to resign at least Lincoln now...
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | November 17, 2008 at 04:57 PM
Omar has fell asleep at the wheel again. Affeldt and Cruz wouldve been a great lift to the bullpen. Oh well 2nd or 3rd place in the NL East will have to do i guess!!
Posted by: wrightreyes1 | November 17, 2008 at 05:02 PM
"you see the reason the Mets didn't sign him was because he is American, and Minaya only signs latinos."
thats terrific..
good signing low years high upside.
i dont think they will go after beimel anymore. i really hope he stays with the dodgers.
tim,
i know this isnt a la thread but they have possibly 10 draft picks coming from the free agents, how exactly will those work?
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | November 17, 2008 at 05:44 PM
I'd love to see Sabean sign cruz next, except I'm not sure he's worth the second round pick as a Type A FA. I guess if they sign another Type A in Tex or CC then the draft pick for Cruz is much lower and more worth it. It would make for a quiet draft next year
Posted by: Longing for Manny...Burriss that is!!! | November 17, 2008 at 06:40 PM
Good signing for San Fran, as someone mentioned earlier, maybe hold on to some more of Cain's QS. Speaking of holding onto leads, Thanks Minaya for making me sick to my stomach. Ugh!
Posted by: MrMet | November 17, 2008 at 08:34 PM
I see the Mets pen being
KROD closing
Cruz set up
Dauner Sanchez
Carlos Muniz
Feliciano
Dennys Reyes
Jaun Rincon
Posted by: gursk1989 | November 17, 2008 at 08:38 PM
Where do I sign for that bullpen? Maybe throw joe smith in the mix at some point, still young, descent stuff. Affeldt would have been a nice move, but that proposed pen works with me
Posted by: MrMet | November 17, 2008 at 08:55 PM
well smith, heilman, schoeneweis, stokes and knight will be gone because they were born in the US. The only American born players sure to stay are wright, maine and pelfrey.
Posted by: gursk1989 | November 17, 2008 at 09:42 PM
I really have had enough of these ignorant comments by people, just keep it to yourself or find another website to post it on.
