it looks like the "deal theo hopes to get donw before the winter meetings" is starting to show its face. that would be a good move, the situation for both teams is still stinky, but atleast the teams can solve some minor problems if both players manage to play decent

Isn't more that the Marlins offered Olsen and not the Rangers inquiring about him? Geesh I would hope with the Marlins having loads of better guys to inquire about.

yeah, but if its a deal for deal trade and the sox take on the willis contract or most of it, that gets alot of money off the books too for the tigers

The padres are rebuilding, why in the world would they want to trade 6.5 million for the 2 years and 20+ left on Dontrelles contract?

Whats the likely hood that Theo swings the Lugo for Willis deal just to allow him to trade one of his younger pitchers like a Buchholz Bowden or Bard for a Teagarden or Salty?

I would rather have Vazquez then Willis. I know Vazquez had at least 1 more quality start then Willis last season since he had 0
Vazquez was quietly doing a decent job for a 4/5 starter until the last month.
Let's pay the extra cpl million for Vazquez.

Who would the Marlins want from the Braves for Olsen?
Posted by: bravesfan23 | November 07, 2008 at 03:00 PM
The Red Sox don't need another back of the rotation guy right now who's just going to block their young starters. This deal would make a lot more sense in my mind...Willis won't be blocking anyone unless he gets it together and if he does, he's most likely much more valuable than Vazquez.

I agree that I would rather have vasquez than willis. Vazquez isn't going to be a front of the rotation starter but he will be a 200IP 200K guy. Willis' numbers are trending in the wrong direction over the past 4 years.

If the Braves are involved in acquiring Olsen, I wonder if they would try to expand it to include either Hermida or Willingham. It would give the Braves a starter and a left fielder filling two of their needs. Anyone have any ideas of what the Marlins would ask for in return?

"I think it is a lot more likely that Detroit trades Willis to the Padres for Greene.
Lugo has $18 million left on his contract and Greene only $6.5 million.
Detroit has said they were not looking to increase their salary budget. Greene provides similar power and defense and has the cheaper contract with s shorter term than Lugo"
That made alot of sense until I realized that San Diego is trying to cut budget below 40 million I believe. They aren't going to put take away 6 million to put on 11.5 million a year.
I think itll be Boston now or nothing. If not, then 09 deadline talks may heat up if he starts performing. Makes most sense because Tigers are cutting budget and one of their biggest needs is a shortstop. They accomplish both by making this trade

This is interesting for the Braves. He has a decent K/BB ratio but he is nothing more than a 4-5. I guess if we do not resign Hampton we will need someone like this.

Willis is cheaper and 6 years younger:
Vazquez,32: '09:$11.5M, '10:$11.5M
Willis,26: '09:$10M, '10:$12M
Response: and Mike Jacobs is four years younger than Lance Berkman. Willis still < Vazquez.
D-train + John Ferrell = big rebound. This could be Theo's anual reclamation project.
Response: Ferrell would be well-advised to focusing on Clay Buchholz as his reclamation project and working on Dice-K's command.

fish trading in division is always interesting they always make a team pay. Obviously Hanson, Heyward, Jenkins arent going anywhere.
Not sure what the fish thoughts on Schafer are after his fun cheating with HGH.
I think they would have some interet in:
Gorkys Hernandez - A ball wasnt impressive really but raw tools still interesting.
Kris Medlen - interesting AA pitcher perhaps could be a solid pen arm. like his K/IP
Really Fish dont got many needs, they have 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, CF covered. They want a good defensive and bat for RF (moving more expensive willingham or hermida supposedly FO is split on which one), and they want a good young catcher to compete with Baker till skip in ready in 2011-2013 range (will be a bit dont rush catchers never pays).
Also they want more pen arms and just minor league arms in general. Our minors are heavy with hitting prospects: Galloway, Dominguez, Morrison, Stanton, Coughlan, Maybin, Skipworth, etc etc and short on good young arms.
Olsen is a solid 3 and inning eatter for most teams in the bigs, sure someone will take 3 years control of a LHP that is only 24-25. :)
Not sure really what in the end we would ask for but I bet a prospect pitcher or two, or perhaps a OF to replace hermida in RF (move him to LF).

How about B. Jones(possible replacement outfielder) Lillibrige(very good defensively and can play all over the field) Acosta(solid bullpen arm and could be a set-up guy)and maybe a prospect. More...less? What are your thoughts fishfan?
Posted by: bravesfan23 | November 07, 2008 at 05:25 PM
they have andino or amazega for lilibrige, and I dont think Jones beats out any of our of's even ross or one of our minor leaguers really for the spots there (like cousins or jai miller). Seems to be about the same, perhaps he was just rushed this past year though up to there.
I think they most likely honestly move olsen for something more meaty as it is a sellers market, but from talent wise it isnt a bad offer at all. You know what I mean?
if CC stays and you see AJ/lowe go poof fast then it wll become an interesting trade market for pitchers.
Still gotta wonder for us being rivals next year if they comes into effect for Either team (we have traded in the past, hampton etc etc). So I guess shall see :)
