It's a shame that Bernie Williams career "ended" the way it has. There were faults on both ends there. It would be sad to see him in another uniform other than the pinstripes, but there really is no room on the Yanks...then again is he really much worse than Gardner:)
Posted by: Chris | November 19, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Exactly Chris. Bernie would only be replacing guys like Melky or Gardner, who have no real upside anyway. Remember in 06, when it looked like he was a bench guy that was finished, and injuries propelled him into the lineup and he made a good little run. I never understood why the yankees handled that how they did because it was not as if they had a can't miss player replacing him in CF. CF has been the biggest issue on that team since Bernie departed. Isn't it worth giving Bernie a shot to win the CF job, or at least split time with Gardner there?
Posted by: nrmax88 | November 19, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Yeah, love Bernie, but his time starting on a first division team was over and he couldn't handle CF anymore. Actually, there are a lot of parallels between him and present day Varitek. Even those who wanted to keep him acknowledged it was more sentiment than production.

As good as Peavy is, Towers has really overplayed his hand at this point. Everyone is aware of the owner's financial woes and their need to cut salary. They should have taken the Braves package when they could have and cut their losses.
Posted by: NY_Cardinal | November 19, 2008 at 11:53 AM
It was defense more than offense, nrmax. His range, be it in CF or RF, was just abysmal.

Alright... I'm still not seeing the logistics of Tex to the Red Sox. The only way it makes sense:
-Trade Lowell. Unlikely as he's just come off of surgery, even with good reports teams will be wary. If the Sox want anything out of it they'll eat a lot of salary.
-Lowell is more or less done due to injury. Not happening, good reports coming off of surgery.
-Trade Bay, move Youk to left. Why fix what isn't broken? And who moves a gold glove infielder to left.
-Trade Youk. Back to the why fix what's not broken.
So yeah I'd be delighted to see Tex in a Red Sox uni... but seriously I don't see it happening.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | November 19, 2008 at 11:57 AM
The Sox can still sign Texeira. There were health concerns with Lowell's hip and Ortiz's wrist. Bring them all to spring training, and let them sort it out if they have to.
In 2003, the Sox had Mueller, Millar, Hillenbrand, and Ortiz all on opening day. They shuffled the lineup, and then sent Hillenbrand to Arizona. Granted, these are bigger contracts, but the same thing can happen. Bring him aboard, if everyone is healthy, shuffle the lineup, and showcase Lowell for a trade.

Re. Giles -
So if the Padres stink, he might approve a trade to a good team IF they extend his contract.
What a great country.

Massarotti needs to take off his espn-colored glasses. There are more teams than Boston and New York who have money to spend. The Angels have said they MAY be able to afford both CC and Tex. To me that means a healthy bump in payroll. I don't think they get both of them, but with their priority being Tex, they can outbid Boston.
Posted by: angelsfan67 | November 19, 2008 at 12:13 PM
Darn Red Sox, always throwing money out there at the high priced free agents. They have a perfectly good first baseman, but still need to go after Tex...
Or is it only the Yankees that people have problems with when they throw cash around?
And I love Bernie Williams as much as the next guy, but there is a time to let go of the past. Gardner has a whole lot more upside than Bernie these days. Sorry, but Id much rather have a young guy with speed who plays very good defense, can bunt and make things happen on the bases than Bernie at this point in time.

" I don't think they get both of them, but with their priority being Tex, they can outbid Boston."
And Boston can outbid them...

Yes, nobody like the Yankees.
Posted by: Kenan and Kel | November 19, 2008 at 12:33 PM
I agree with Angelfan 67. I read the Red Sox honk article and again the baseball universe revolves around Boston and New York.
If the Angels do not sign him, I would love to see the Yankees sign Tex for one reason and one reason only: so this myopic writer and those like him can and jump off the top Prudential building to their pathetic death.
Posted by: tbone88 | November 19, 2008 at 12:35 PM
when the Red Sox made a move to get A-Rod, they had a side deal in place to move Nomar for Magglio Ordonez. i dont see them getting tex without a side deal for Lowell.
Posted by: GeneralManager | November 19, 2008 at 12:37 PM
Even If there are not concerns over Lowell's health why not bring in Tex and move Youk to 3rd? Bring Lowell along slowly in spring training and if he shows he is healthy then you can trade him.
Posted by: thedeuce | November 19, 2008 at 12:39 PM
Here's one Dodger fan hoping that we keep Beimel, he's a quality pitcher.
I believe he is much better than his numbers indicate, as he is always brought in during situations with runners already on base. It would be a blow to see him go.
Posted by: DodgersLBC | November 19, 2008 at 12:39 PM
so tony massarotti (who covers the sox for the boston globe) should be writing about what, exactly? the nationals need for a 5th starter? how the sox should stand pat, and not make any major moves? that would sure make for an interesting read.
get over yourself people

FINALLY! someone has said towers has done a bad job pursuing a trade for Peavy! This is not your fantasy baseball league nor is it MLB 2K Kevin Towers!

Teixeira is going to the Yankees or the Angels. No one cares what the red soxs will offer because their not getting him. And if some how they do, i want people to shut up about the yankees buying people because the red soxs do the same thing if not more than the yankees. The red Sucks do have the 2 highest paid championships in MLB history.

"The red Sucks do have the 2 highest paid championships in MLB history."
but does this include inflation?
Posted by: Boston Belongs To Me | November 19, 2008 at 01:12 PM
So far I haven't seen any evidence that the Sox are going after Texeira other then speculation from the media.
I haven't even seen the old "Club sources speaking on the condition of anonymity" rumor surface.
But Tony Massarotti keeps throwing out that the Red Sox want to sign him. In fact he had a whole blog entry a little while ago just about Texeira (not Red Sox specific). I think he's obsessed...

I thought everyone was supposed to shut up about it after they paid 50 million to talk to Dice-K? Or was it when they signed Manny 20 million a year? Or was it when *insert Red Sox free agent signing here*

"The red Sucks do have the 2 highest paid championships in MLB history."
Ahh, but do they have the highest paid roster that missed the playoffs in MLB history?
Those that live in glass houses should not throw stones...

It;s ok that you guys are jealous of GREATNESS. It's ok that it took the red soxs 86 to win one. Tough luck Williams could not have seen it, he could not carry his team to one like Gehrig,Ruth,Mantle,DiMaggio, Munson and Jeter have.
Posted by: yanks12025 | November 19, 2008 at 01:42 PM
I think it is a fair/reasonable request for any writer, that if they are going to put out this type of article they must account for the other rosters moves that would have to be made; and how they would be made.
Or does it not matter for the sake of the article that the Red Sox will have to trade at least one of the following:
1. 2007 World Series MVP, Gold Glove Winner at 3rd base
2. 3rd Place, 2008 MVP voting, Gold Glove winner at 1st Base.
3. A guy named Big Papi.
Teixiera might be on the Red Sox radar, but it would be great if a guy whose job it is to cover the Red Sox could provide a bit more insight in to just how the team would make room.

If you could just explain what any of that has to do with this off season, or next year or the year after that...

"If you could just explain what any of that has to do with this off season, or next year or the year after that..."
Don't you know? When a Yankees fan is challenged and has nothing to say in response, their natural instinct is an immediate outburst of screaming "TWENTY SIX! TWENTY SIX! TWENTY SIX!" to the point that we eventually just tune them out, ending the conversation.
Typical of most Yankees fans. Not all, but the majority.

I never brought up 26. I was just making a point about how the red sox's have the 2 highest paid championships. I know the yankees have the highest paid team to not make the playoffs. We did have some major injures but we can't blame it all on them. The Rays and Sox's played better this year. Nothing you can do. Jeter dont care about winning an MVP, all he cares is about winning and i believe he has 3 more rings then Dustin. What would you rather want to win an MVP or to win 4 world series rings. I have nothing against Ted williams, i was just saying he could never carry his team to win it all. I dont agree when people say he is the greatest hitter of all-time, this has to go to Ruth. Ruth was the greatest player and he made baseball what it is today. And i never said i would never post again.

"trade cano and hughes and melky for ceda and ramirez"
Ceda isn't even on the cubs anymore.
Calling up Jackson is kinda funny though.

Yanks12025, Ahhhhhh!! 26 rings, Jeter is a God, Ruth was greatest hitter, Jeter has 3 rings.... What has your stinkin', overpriced, self-important, "entitled" team done since 2000?
Here, let me help:
2001 - lost ws
2002 - lost in playoffs, I forget where
2003 - beat Sox w AFB but...lost ws
2004 - biggest choke in baseball history
2005 - lost ALDS
2006 - lost ALDS
2007 - lost ALDS
2008 - no playoffs for you
Sox payroll is way too big but you should never open your trap about who "buys" pennants or ws's. Nobody can spend like Hankestein. Why don't you be like George and complain about unfair interlegue schedules like he did a few years ago. NYY fans are whiners vice winners. FTY.
Posted by: jackmart13 | November 19, 2008 at 03:26 PM
Jackmart13,
What team do you like. If its not the red sox's your just mad because your owner dont spend money on their team. At least are owner cares about putting a good team out their every year. George will go in the HOF for turning the yankees around. And im not whinning about anything. In my last post i said the rays and Red sox's have gotten better.
Posted by: yanks12025 | November 19, 2008 at 03:34 PM
"In my last post i said the rays and Red sox's have gotten better."
Do you realize that some people just don't like the Yankees and aren't jealous of George, Hank, Ruth, Jeter or Melky?
Posted by: Kenan and Kel | November 19, 2008 at 03:40 PM
According to Bernie Miklasz, the Cardinals should have one of their needs filled tomorrow....no link to an article but that is what he said over at his Press Box forum.

Yanks12025,
Dude, I am a total Sox fan. I just love busting b#lls and busting on the Yanks. But you are right in that everybody (Sox, Rays, Jays, and O's) were lucky the Yanks got killed with injuries this year but Sox had their share too and they stayed in the hunt. Come on man, you can't seriously complain about the Sox buying big $ fa's as a Yanks fan can you?
