Francouer and Escobar for Greinke and Butler. Provided the Peavy deal doesn't happen.

sounds like furcal would be a nice fit for kc.... then again, furcal would also fit for about 10 other teams.. good to see they are looking to spend money for a change

Wait, Moore thinks Jacobs is a better hitter than anyone but Abreu, Teix, and Manny or those were the only three off the top of his head?
Giambi...? I'm sure I could think of quite a few more.

kinda funny how he said one of his needs was OBP but went and got Jacobs.....good luck Royals

I know that this is gonna sound a bit random, but what if the Royals sent one of their many 1B in a package with say Mark Teahen and David DeJesus for Jake Peavy? It's just a thought but if they have all this extra payroll room, then maybe it could happen.

Any interest in Freddy Sanchez for Kila Ka'aihue and maybe a low minors command pitcher like Matt Mitchell?
Posted by: jarms | November 11, 2008 at 04:54 PM
Ummm...the Padres kind of already have this guy named Adrian Gonzalez at 1B...I think they're good at that position. As for Teahen and DeJesus, how do guys that are only under team control for 2-3 more years fit the Padres needs? Oh and where's the pitching that the Padres have prioritized getting in any Peavy deal?

Id really like to see this team make a bounce back and contend this year...
itd be great if they could get furcal
as a ss and get rid of someone like butler or teahan for a more solid outfielder..(might need a prospect for some trades) like maybe giles or a ludwick//ankiel type of guy

Peavy would veto any trade to the Royals. Last time I checked KC was in the AL.

Kila for Freddy Sanchez?
A) Good God no
B) they already have a non-slugging, contact hitting, fringe range second basemen in Callaspo
C) They already have a low minors command pitcher in Rowdy Hardy
d) Don't the Pirates have like 3 1B too?

"Francouer and Escobar for Greinke and Butler." This is a joke, right?
Posted by: PJH | November 11, 2008 at 05:04 PM
As a Buccos fan, I'd be completely on board trading Sanchez for Kila or Shealy, It just wouldn't make much sense for the Royals. I think Sanchez should bounce back to being a .300 hitter, and he hits very well with RISP, but he is another pathetically low OBP guy. Not to mention he's fragile and expensive. KC could surprise people this year I think, their team is not that bad. Meche and Grienke is a nice 1-2 punch and their lineup would be hovering around the middle of the pack with another bat.

"Moore named three free agent bats he ranked above Mike Jacobs: Mark Teixeira, Manny Ramirez, and Bobby Abreu."
Adam Dunn, Milton Bradley, Pat Burrell, and Raul Ibanez.

I say take the extra money and lock Greinke up. Don't trade Greinke until some of the other pitchers have developed, if at all. Then, I think Furcal is probably unrealistic for the Royals, but go after Cabrera. If we trade anybody, we need to go after a SS, C, and CF, and probably a power corner outfielder. I get sick of reading people's posts about trading Greinke and Butler for crap. We ought to target Andrus and Teagarden from Texas and maybe Snider from Toronto. How about Fowler from Colorado. Those are some of the guys we ought to target. We might have to give up Butler or Hochevar or both, but we need to get a leadoff guy, and we need to get a SS for sure. Most of all we need patience. Let's trade Guillen for a bag of air.

Looks like Brian Roberts would be a good fit here. I would trade Roberts for Grienke straight up if he isn't interested in signing an extension. If Grienke isn't available, the Royals have some solid prospects to check out.

DM did not say that those were the only FA's better than Jacobs, he was just giving examples that would be out of their price range. Listen to the podcast before you make silly comments.

Let's look at Freddy's three years as a starter. The fewest games he's played is 145, this past year-- he plays through injuries rather than hitting the DL. Injuries weren't even a problem until his offseason shoulder surgery took longer to heal than expected, which had him out of sync for much of 2008 and lowered all of his numbers.
The first two seasons he started he posted lines of .344/.378/.473 and .304/.343/.442. Those aren't poor OBP or SLG numbers for a second baseman. He hits for roughly ten HRs a year, but he's a doubles machine (53 in '06, 42 in '07) when he's healthy--which he will be for 2009.
While his range is slightly below average, he has great glove work, so he won't cost you plays that way.
Kila, meanwhile, is a one-year wonder split between two hitters' leagues at the age of 24. Plus he doesn't hit many doubles which can mean that his HR numbers could be a result of those hitters parks (although the other side could be that he's just one of those high HR, low doubles hitters like Dunn, but this is more rare and history shows he hits for a 1:1 ratio rather than his 2008 2.5 HR:1 2b ratio).
Don't get me wrong, Kila could end up being good. But he's unproven and could just as easily become a flash in the pan player with a late minor league breakout like Steve Pearce was for us in 2007. So yes, I would require Kila plus a low-level finesse type pitcher with some success like Matt Mitchell (I would throw in some cash on Sanchez's contract though).
And I wouldn't trade for Kila just to trade Adam LaRoche and plug him in for the long term at first base. I'd use him to create more competition for that job between him, Moss, and Pearce in the hopes that at least one of them proves himself worthy of the position.

Seriously, we should have platooned Shealy/Ka'aihue/Butler at first and DH. I hate that we traded for Jacobs just due to the fact it is going to stunt the other players growth. I guess we will be keeping Ka'aihue at AAA for the entire season? Then what about 2010? We are going to have to deal somebody. Also, what kind of value does Bannister have?

It was the 5/55 for Meche two years ago, then the 3/36 for Jose Guillen last year. Any predictions on what it'll be this year? Any .315 OBP guys out there asking for 4/45 that Dayton Moore could get his hands on?

What is the fascination with Aviles? Unless he walks more, he's not going to be very good. His OBP was only 29 pts better than his BA.

Ever hear of a pair of Right Fielders by the name of Tony Gwynn and Ichiro Suzuki? Neither has (had) a penchant for the base on balls, yet both were (are) elite hitters. On top of that, Aviles is an excellent defensive shortstop.

This is really interesting that the Royals are increasing their payroll. I hope they can make a good team out of this. I remember how great the Royals were for so long while I was growing up.
I really like the past 5 drafts for the Royals, and think Hosmer, Moustakas, and Hochevar are going to turn into a great team to watch.
Not high on Aviles myself.
Posted by: FamousGrouse | November 12, 2008 at 06:07 AM
If you're not high on him, you can send Aviles Pittsburgh's way then.

""Francouer and Escobar for Greinke and Butler." This is a joke, right?"
Not really. KC wants a proven shortstop and apparently also like Francouer. I thought Butler was "in the doghouse", so it's a change of scenery swap for both. Sure, Atlanta would have to add someone else for Greinke, but it's not that crazy.
Posted by: daslied | November 12, 2008 at 09:07 AM
Point being that Francouer and Butler have high upsides but have disappointed recently. They seem to be almost the same kind of player, but I'm not that familiar with Butler. Throw Kotchman in, so it's essentially Kotchman and Escobar for Greinke. Or even add some B player, like Carlyle. Dayton's made weirder moves...
Posted by: daslied | November 12, 2008 at 09:20 AM
Kotchman is clearly not needed on the Royals now. Look at how many 1st Basemen we have. Plus we have Hosmer in the minors. I understand why other teams/fans want Greinke, which is all the reason we should lock him up. We are getting better and so will Greinke. We do need to try and get a SS/2B and Catcher for the future. Wouldn't hurt to get a CF either. But I don't think we should trade Greinke to do it. I say we just ride it out this season and try to deal Guillen and a few other guys before the deadline. If Hochevar can bounce back, our rotation should be good. If Bannister can get it going, the rotation could be great. We need to go after a prototype leadoff guy who can play one of the positions up the middle. Fowler, McCutchen, etc.
Posted by: Grover'sRoyals | November 12, 2008 at 10:23 AM
Right - I totally forgot about the Royals having Jacobs, Kilawhateverhisnameis, Hosmer. I would like to see the team do well, though, but not as much as I'd like Greinke in Atlanta. :)
Posted by: daslied | November 12, 2008 at 10:54 AM
I know, but we are pretty attached to the kid ourselves. He can be absolutely dynamite. I feel we have some pieces that could help other teams and I think we need to think outside the box, but I'm really against trading Greinke, Soria, Gordon, Moustakas, and Hosmer. I'm almost afraid to give up on Butler and Hochevar as well. As for Meche, Guillen, DeJesus, Bannister, and maybe Teahen, I think those guys would be able to contribute on a team where they didn't have to be the man. Meche has been very good the last 2 years and as much as I value starting pitching, I'm also looking beyond his contract and think he could be moved this year or next year and bring in some pretty high level prospect(s). As for Guillen, I think we should send him off for some Big League Chew. But he is a necessary evil unfortunately. DeJesus is still pretty young, but similar to Meche, I think he can be moved for a prospect or two, maybe just a single high level prospect ready to break in. DeJesus is a very good player. I think he is under rated, but I would prefer to have a CF who can fly. Maybe we keep him and move him to Left or Right. Bannister might be worth moving. I just don't know, my crystal ball is starting to short out.
