« Angels Notes: Ibanez, Dunn, Fuentes | Main | Manny Feels Ignored; Threatens Retirement »
7:18: Mark Bowman at MLB.com says it's down to the Braves or the Yankees for Burnett. Interestingly, he notes that A.J. might not necessarily want to be an "ace" of a staff like he would be in Atlanta. He has the Yanks' offer between $80-85MM.
12:12pm: Rosenthal heard indications the Braves were preparing a final push for Burnett and would guarantee a fifth year.
10:33am: Rosenthal and Fraley see the Yankees as the clear frontrunner for Burnett. They say Braunecker will contact other clubs today to give them one last chance to beat the Yanks' five-year, $85MM offer. Will the Braves counter? Burnett signing with the Yankees would be undesirable for the Blue Jays in two ways - they'd have to face him fairly often, and they'd (tentatively) get the Yanks' second-round pick instead of a first-round one.
9:46am: Buster Olney says the Yankees are confident they won't be overbid for Burnett, at least.
9:19am: Chipper Jones spoke to Burnett about ten days ago, and the pitcher told him that if he does play in the NL, it'll only be with the Braves.
8:53am: Ken Davidoff and Kat O'Brien wrote that the Yankees "appeared to be closing in on a deal" for Burnett late last night. They put the offer at about $80MM.
8:32am: Ken Rosenthal and Gerry Fraley say the Braves have not offered Burnett five guaranteed years. The fifth year is an easily attainable vesting option, though. Dan Graziano says that this time around, Braunecker is not seeking an opt-out clause for Burnett.
2:19am: ESPN's Jerry Crasnick has been all over the A.J. Burnett talks. Today he says the Yankees have a five-year deal worth about $85MM on the table. Burnett's agent Darek Braunecker isn't seeking much more than that - he's eyeing a Carlos Zambrano-influenced $91.5MM payday. It's an interesting comparison, given that Z's deal was signed over a year ago and not on the open market.
Crasnick says discussions continued with the Yankees late Wednesday. Yankee players have been calling Burnett, lobbying him to choose their team over the Braves. Crasnick believes a deal could be in place as soon as today.
Yesterday we heard conflicting reports about whether the Braves guaranteed a fifth year in their offer.

Most college football fans realize the subjective nature of the process, thus the prevalence of the term "mythical national champions"), but also realize that its not that likely for the two "best" teams to make the championship game once you get to 3+ rounds of playoffs. College football is all about the most exciting regular season in sports and the debates it raises.
With the NFL, I only really watch games not involving "my team" if it has fantasy implications or something along those lines. I don't find myself switching back and forth between games with a lot of intensity on Sundays like I do on Saturdays.
As for the women, I definitely agree. The south (along with Vegas) is probably the best per capita in terms of the hotness of women, but LA and NYC definitely make up for it with raw numbers and/or plastic surgery. I've spent some time living in NYC and I respect the talent...especially after going to school in Boston (ouch!)

GeneseoMC-
What comment are you talking about? If you're referring to my little dig about the girls, it was relevant to BravesDawg's seemingly unprovoked slight of Northeastern women and absurd assertion that there's nothing to do in NYC but freeze your ass off all year and cheer on the home team once the weather turns (though I DO hate the f-in' cold). Granted, I probably should have taken the high road and not- as nixa put it- 'stooped to (BravesDawg's) level,' but...well, there's the weight.
As for BravesDawg maintaining that there are better looking people in the south than there are in the north...? Do you actually believe that or are you simply trying to instigate something? What...is it something in the water? Better breeding? As I mentioned in my response to nixa, I WAS impressed by the southern belles, but I think a big part of it has to do with more sun and less clothing. Otherwise, there are hotties everywhere. And anyway, as the great David Lee Roth, quoting the great Brian Wilson once said, "I wish they all could be California, girrrrrrrrlllllsss." Truer words, 'nuff said.

No you're right about the rest of Bravesdawgs comments, I just think the has a right to defend his local people when they are attacked. The rest didn't really seem to be going anywhere.
Definitely not an issue for this board or for anyone really.

Oh, we're going to make this about this. For starters, people in the south are much kinder, more welcoming than people in the North. Southerners are genuine, real people who always remember where they came from. People from the North suck. Secondly, girls in the south are way prettier and much less skanky. Here's a picture of a typical, not out of the ordinary, group of ole miss girls: http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/3198/n1288650106305399316920ad2.jpg
The same for Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU, Florida State, North Carolina, Texas, Florida, South Carolina, Clemson, and NC State. These girls are incredibly good looking and they're average at our schools whereas they don't exist except in small numbers up north.

nixa- we're going to have to agree to disagree as far as college football. I don't think I'm going to change your mind and I'm certain you aren't going to change mine. I respect your opinion, I just don't share it.
Geneseo- What are you talking about, dude?! The 'his level' thing was in reference to BravesDawg and his insults. Keep up.
I think this thread is dead.

Blaaa I just hope he goes to the Braves. Sign Pettitte to a 1 year deal and sign Sheets to a 2 year deal, then it will be fine for the most part I think
Posted by: mike923 | December 11, 2008 at 02:32 PM
Are there any big name pitchers who are free agents in 2010?
Posted by: mike923 | December 11, 2008 at 02:32 PM
Oh milehigh, we've been beating the dead horse for over an hour now.
And my mistake, I took one of your posts as directed at me. There is to much Garbage on this page to keep up with.
Half of it comming from myself.

I really just need to close this browser window.
I think my refresh button actually fell off through the display.

Time to go after Sheets! I bet the Yankees will outbid us their also. Well, maybe Lowe then? They should just sign Andy Pettite for spite.

AtlantaBred-
I'd call you a blithering idiot, but A) I think that would be too kind, given your absurd generalizations and B) You included a photo of fairly hot chicks, which means you're misinformed, but not ALL bad.
Still, if you think the girls in your picture are somehow unusually hot or that they are, in any way, superior to the girls in New York...you need to put down the pipe. Dude, we've got models here. A lot. Actresses too. And dancers. And a bunch of chicks with normal jobs who just happen to be ridiculously hot. Don't you watch TV or anything. It's exaggerated, of course, but not by much. Half the girls in that photo will probably wind up here or in LA- and they will not be exceptional in any way, save for their accents- so enjoy them while you can.
Posted by: milehigh78 | December 11, 2008 at 02:41 PM
You've clearly never been out of New York.

A little amusing update on whats going on with the rest of the discussions.
I think we have the second most comments of any current news feed with about 215, second only to the Cameron Trade thread with 295.
God only knows what they're talking about on that one. Probably something like:
a- "Dont Trade Melky!"
b- "But he's really not that good and cameron hits 25 HR's"
a- "Yea but he has so much 'potential', and if you trade him, Cano will be sad :(..."
which topic do you think is more important?

Mike
Off the top of my head the free agent pitchers in 2010 include Beckett, Halliday and Lee.

Tim, *notes
Halladay is a FA after 2010.

You mean Halladay? He's a FA after 2010...

"BravesDawg, Dude, stop trying to defend your post. it makes you look even more stupider than you really are."
Gotta love that.

I don't see Burnett in ATL since CC signed. NY is just to tempting and offering more money. I know he is hurt just as much, but I would rather have Sheets anyway just cause he's cheaper and it probably won't be more than a 3 yr deal.

I understand the SP market this offseason, but 5/80 just seems too much for a guy more of a 1.5 than a real Ace ..Just go for two of Perez, Sheets, Wolf if it goes ANY higher than 80mil.
Sheets is nearly as good and dependable, at certainly a much better price (3/36-38mil).

If that comment about him not wanting the "ace" label is true, he is definitely signing with NY. CC will easily command that attention, and gladly accept it.
It'd also be interesting to see Sheets sign with the Yanks as well. That would make one potentially (health pending) sick rotation.
1 - CC
2 - AJ
3 - Wang
4 - Sheets
5 - Joba
All 5 have "ace-like" stuff. Wow.
Posted by: Colton | December 11, 2008 at 08:22 PM
Colton,
Sure, with the 2/3/4 all health risks, and a 300 pound Ace and #5 ...Another disappointing season for the Yankees.

"5/80 seems too much for more of a 1.5 than a true Ace"
Yes it does, doesn't it? Unfortunately, the going rate for a true ace is now 7/160. Down economy may ass.
Posted by: mac_1103 | December 11, 2008 at 08:45 PM
LG..
Ill give you 2 and 4, but how is Wang a health risk?
His injury last season was a fluke while running the bases.

Yankeegirl,
Yea, sorry about that ..Didn't realize that until after I posted (twice).

Studio and Nixa, all I'm saying is that you guys can talk all you want about Towers, but guess what? If Wren enters 09 with Jurrjens as his ace, the Braves are in trouble and looking at 4th place again.
He had one main need to address and it looks like he may be left empty-handed when it's all over. Not dramatic, and I'm not saying Wren is a terrible GM. I'm just pointing out that if you guys are going to criticise Towers, Wren does deserve to be blamed as well for what looks like a bad offseason so far.
At least you can say Towers is operating in a context which is very unfavorable to him (inferior payroll which he still has to trim further, team being shopped,...). Wren has a good core of players, a great farm and one need: starting pitching (maybe another bat) and some funds to do it. But he completely misjudged how the FA market would play out, and now the chances of the Braves not adding a frontline starter are fairly high.
I guess that basically, whether Towers trades Peavy or not, SD will likely finish last no matter what.
Peavy alone could at least buy you guys 3rd place, maybe second depending on who else joined. But with most of the top FA's likely to pitch somewhere other than Atlanta, it will ber considered a missed opportunity.

Honestly.. if ya'll didn't see it.. scroll up and look at that picture posted by AtlantaBred.
God, I love being from the South.
PS. I got NC State University and it is so true, beautiful southern women, bourbon and coke, and not wearing hair gel and jean shorts like they do in the north.
